Hometown Softball Program Game Recap For Baldwin Highlanders – 04/24/2013

Youth continues to lead the way for the Baldwin Highlanders on the softball diamond. Tuesday afternoon, the Highlanders won their sixth straight game with a 9-0 whitewash of the four-time defending Pittsburgh City League champion Brashear Bulls.

Baldwin struck first in the bottom of the first when Mallory O’Brien drew a one out walk against Bulls starter Miranda Piccolino. She scored on a triple by Kayla Eberst. Eberst scored one out later on an error on Brashear shortstop Anna Bruecken, who’s throw to first base was low, allowing Melissa Paterni to be safe as the Highlanders led 2-0.

A five-run third inning allowed Baldwin to take total control of the game. Paterni doubled home Abbey Suhoski who had drawn a one-out walk. With two outs, Charlotte Nieman was hit by a pitch and an infield single by Ashley Brady loaded the bases. Breanna Meyer cleared the based when her single up the middle got past center fielder Brianna Clark as Meyer ended up at third base on the single and two base error. She scored on a single by Jaime Schliecher as the Highlanders led 7-0 after three innings.

Samantha Kuharic’s Highlanders added single runs in the fourth inning on another Bruecken throwing error and in the sixth inning when Meyer smacked a double to score Brady who had tripled with one out.

The offensive stars for Baldwin were the #8 and #9 hitters in the order as Brady was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored while Meyer was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI. Paterni finished 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, O’Brien was 2 for 4 with a run scored and Sohoski ended up 1 for 2 with 2 walks and 2 runs scored. Both Schliecher and Eberst had a hit and an RBI.

One of SIX freshman in the starting nine for Baldwin. pitcher Ana Hale scattered five hits while walking two and striking out one in pitching the shutout for the Highlanders, who improve to 7-4 in Class AAAA Section 4, tied with Bethel Park for third place and the final playoff spot. Baldwin has won six in a row to improve to 8-4 overall.

in their first year playing in the WPIAL, Brashear fell to 2-8 in the section and overall and were eliminated from the playoff chase. Clark had three of the Bulls five hits on the afternoon.
