Hometown Softball Program Game Recap – Brentwood – 04/18/2012

At Brentwood High School, the home standing Spartans had a rough day on the field losing to section rival the Keystone Oaks Golden Eagles  by a score of 14-1. Coming into the game the Spartans were a half game out of 3rd place with a 3-3 section record, now they are 4-5 overall and 3-4 in AA section 1.

Half way thru the season but still hope for a playoff berth, the Spartans just couldn’t get any runs off Eagle pitcher Bree Fisher.  Any time Brentwood had runners on, the KO defense made a big play to thwart a rally. The Spartans had runners on in every inning but the second, but had runners thrown out at 3rd base three times, at home once, and after a single in the final inning at first to end the game.

Brentwood is a young team with only 6 returning players that started last year. All of them are at new positions this year. With only three Seniors, 3 Juniors, 2 Sophomores, and 3 Freshman, coach Jennifer Ditoro admits its a rebuilding year. In today’s game the Eagles hit the ball hard, and took advantage of Brentwood errors. Just when it seemed the Spartans would get out of an inning disaster struck. The Eagles scored 6 in the 2nd inning, 5 after two were out. They scored one in the third with two out, and one in the 5th with two out. KO is fighting for first place in the section and currently sits 1/2 game behind first place Seton La Salle, and their record improves to 7-2, and 6-1 in the section.

For the Spartans JR Sydney Bauer the catcher reached base 3 times and scored the lone run. Freshman Miranda Klein the short stop also reached base 3 times. She had 2 singles and an RBI to lead her team in offense. She also made three solid defensive plays, 2 of them to end Eagle rallies. SR Alexis Klimes the center fielder reached base twice, walking and getting plunked with a pitch.She made three catches in the outfield as well and almost made a running stab behind second base after a long run. JR starting pitcher Meghan Gildea struck out 3 batters, and walked three to take the loss.

In talking with the players, coaches and team managers one thing is evident about this team. They have heart and a great attitude. Despite the tough loss they were never down. All the girls supported each other, worked hard and are committed to getting better. There was no sulking, finger pointing, yelling or temper tantrums you see from some athletes. Everything they did they kept their heads up, and kept it fun. Second Baseman Alexis Gaughan after the game told us ” We joke around, and keep things light, we know we have work to do to get better, we all love playing softball and will keep working hard this year to improve, and we will be real good next year ”

Brentwood plays again on Thursday versus the Carlynton Cougars in a section game, and MSA Sports will visit Brentwood again in a few weeks on April 27th on Senior day as they take on the Quaker Valley Quakers in a Hometown Broadcast.
