The West Allegheny Indians got off the proverbial snide with a decisive yet hard-earned victory over the Mt Lebanon Blue Devils on their home court Thursday night, September 10. The Indians got off to a fast start in Game 1, taking advantage of a number of mental mistakes by the Blue Devils en route to a 25-18 win.
Game 2 also went the way of the Indians, but the Blue Devils made them earn it, at least for a while. Mt Lebanon kept it close until it was tied at 18, but West A took the last 7 points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
There was a sharp momentum shift in Game 3 as things started to come together for the Blue Devils and fall apart for the Indians. Mt Lebo led by as many 9 and eventually took Game 3, 25-17.
The Devils jumped out to the early lead in Game 4,7-3, before the Indians started to show some resiliency, scoring the next 5 points to take an 8-7 lead. Mt. Lebanon Coach Brian Begor called a time-out, and the Devils responded in a huge way, building a 20-13 lead. Curiously, West A Coach Yoko Nagao decided not to call time-out and let her girls play through the huge deficit. The strategy paid off as the Indians scratched and clawed their way back to tie the game at 20. The two squads went back and forth and forced each other to win by 2. An attempted kill went into the net, and West A emerged with a 29-27 win to take the match, 3-1.
Throughout the match, the Indians worked the left side of the court, putting the kills in the capable fists of Lauryn Long and Allison Koester, gaining a number of points for the Indians by working all ends of the court. The Blue Devils also had a hard time solving thr service game of Alyssa Placha.
