At Chartiers-Houston High School in Hometown Girls Volleyball action, the Chartiers Houston Bucs win an important section 6 single A match as they defeat the Burgettstown Blue Devils by a 3-0 match score. Game scores were 25-15, 25-20, and 26-24. The Bucs improve their record to 3-4 on the year, and 2-4 in section play. They still trail both Avella and Fort Cherry for the 4th playoff spot in the section.
The Chartiers Houston Zoo, a group of students who support all of the Bucs teams was in attendance. It was America theme night for them, red white and blue colors, flag ties, and a true welcome to MSA Sports by the group was much appreciated. They set the tone for the girls on the court.
The Bucs had an easy time in game one as they ran out to a 10-4 lead, Kassie Kesnick on the service line was the first Buc player to produce points from serving. It was a trend that would last all three games. But she started it all. The Blue Devils wouldn't go down easy, and cut the lead to 12-7, until Char Houston stretched the lead to 19-9. Shylynn Hamilton produced 5 great serves during the run and the Bucs seemingly would win the game easily. Sabrina Stankus ran off 5 straight serves as well and the Bucs led 24-11. Burgettstown then scored 4 in a row to make it look closer than it was but the Bucs win game one 25-15. For the Bucs Jenna Vulcano was an important part of the game one win. She helped with setting, played strong defense in the middle and had a few nice offensive plays.
The strong service game continued into game two but it took a while. Burgettstown ran out to a 12-5 lead and were thoroughly outplaying the Bucs. Combined from the end of game one until this point they outscored Char Houston 16-6. Coach Lori Levers had to use a few times outs to remind the girls what was going wrong. Just when it looked like disaster, Kassie Kesnick again came to the service line and got them within 3 at 12-9. The Blue Devils again stayed strong and scored 3 of the next 5 point to lead 15-11. This is when Montana Johnston stepped to the service line. Eight straight serves later the Bucs led 19-15. a complete reversal as they went on a 14-3 run. They would go on to out score Burgettstown 6-3 to win game two 25-19. For the Bucs Allison Lukan, and Lexi Tatano played strong defense at the net in the middle and left side. Both also contributed to the offensive attack in the comeback.
Game three was a carbon copy of game two. The Blue Devils would not be denied as they led early at 7-3, and stretched the lead to 21-13. Everything was going wrong for the Bucs. Net serves, unforced errors, serves out of bounds, and mental errors on defense just gave points away. The focus just wasn't there for the Bucs. But a funny thing happened. A controversial call against Bucs Sophomore star Kylee Levers was the worst thing to happen to Burgettstown. She was mad, even approaching the official about the call. After the Bucs scored to make it 24-15 and seemingly headed for game 4, Levers went back to score with a look on her face as if to say I got this. Got this indeed, she rattled of 11 straight laser serves and the Bucs win 26-24. She was on a mission. Picking a different Blue Devil to aim her power serve at each time. they simply couldn't handle her serve. She had 7 aces, and only twice were the Blue Devils even able to get three passes and a shot over the net.
After the game both Kassie Kesnick and Shylynn Hamilton talked with the MSA broadcasters. Both girls talked about how this Buc's team is a family, and that after losing 5 starters from last year these girls are starting to find success and get used to the speed of the varsity game.
The next Hometown Broadcast at Chartiers Houston will be on Tuesday October 8th as the Avela Eagles come to town in what should be a battle for a playoff spot.
