The good start to the 2013 girls volleyball season continued for the Brentwood Spartans as they defeated the Wilkinsburg Tigers (3-0) at Brentwood High School to improve to (2-0) on the season.
Brentwood used a couple of runs in the first two games of the match to win each by identical scores of 25-11. Game 1 was tied at 1-1 before the Spartans rattled off 9 of the next 10 points to take control.
Wilkinsburg’s only lead of the match came in game 2, when the Tigers took a 6-4 advantage. But after a Brentwood timeout and the Spartans and Tigers tied at 7-all, Brentwood scored the game’s next 13-points to secure the win.
There was no such drama in game 3 as the Spartans raced out to an 8-0 lead behind the serving of senior Brooke McWilliams and never looked back coasting to the 20-point victory and the 3 game-match win.
There was not a lot of volleying in any of the games which meant Brentwood’s service had to be the difference maker and it was. Besides McWilliams, senior co-captain Olivia Healy, seniors Lexi Bubacz, Tammy Garcia and junior co-captain Alex Gibbons along with junior Christine Gerstel all contributed to the Spartans victory from the service line.
A year after making the playoffs and losing a preliminary match to Bentworth, the Spartans have not lost a game this year, also posting a (3-0) win over Vincentian Academy.
The Spartans will be tested in their next contest as they hit the road for the first time when they visit section rival Serra Catholic on Wednesday September 11th. Serra was the Section 2/A champion last season and advanced to the WPIAL quarterfinals. The Eagles also handed the Spartans 2 of their 3 losses in 2012.
The young Wilkinsburg squad dropped to (0-2) on the year.
