High school soccer roundup for Oct. 19, 2024: Greensburg Central Catholic, Chartiers Valley pull off 1st-round upsets

Jackson Vacanti scored from nearly 30 yards out in the first overtime to lead No. 12 Greensburg Central Catholic to a 2-1 victory over No. 5 Aquinas Academy (12-4) in the first round of the WPIAL Class A boys soccer playoffs Saturday. Niko Miller also scored for the Centurions (7-7-1), who will face No. 4 Beaver County Christian in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Beaver County Christian 2, Riverview 0 – Tyler Guevara scored twice off of assists from Robert McMahan and Michael Lanigan recorded the shutout as No. 4 Beaver County Christian (14-3) beat No. 13 Riverview (10-7) in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Beaver County Christian advances to play No. 12 Greensburg Central Catholic in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Bentworth 11, California 0 – Ryan Moessner had five goals and an assist to lead top-seeded Bentworth (16-0) over No. 16 California (2-9) in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs at Peters Township. Dillan Colbert added two goals and an assist for Bentworth, which led 8-0 at halftime. Bentworth will face No. 9 Trinity Christian in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Bethel Park 3, Montour 2 – Xavier Jackson had two goals and an assist, including the game-winner with less than seven minutes to go, to lead No. 5 Bethel Park (12-6) to the WPIAL Class 3A first round win against No. 12 Montour (9-9). Bethel Park will play No. 4 Latrobe in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Chartiers Valley 4, Indiana 1 – John Krug had a pair of goals and Jake Walker and Xavier Mwaura also scored as No. 14 Chartiers Valley (9-8) stunned No. 3 Indiana (15-3) in the Class 3A first round. Tim Birch scored for Indiana. Chartiers Valley faces No. 6 Mars in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Eden Christian 2, Carlynton 1 (OT) – No. 7 Eden Christian (9-6-2) defeated No. 10 Carlynton (12-7) in overtime and will face No. 2 Winchester Thurston in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Franklin Regional 3, Trinity 0 – Danny Christafano scored two goals and Tyler Pipon added another as No. 7 Franklin Regional (12-3-1) shut out No. 10 Trinity (9-6-3) in a WPIAL 3A first-round game in Murrysville. Franklin Regional will play at No. 2 Thomas Jefferson (13-1-3) in the quarterfinals Wednesday. Fabrizzio Costa, Jovan Sankoorikal and Joey Bayne had assists, and Noah Walker saved a penalty kick on the way to earning the shutout for the Panthers.

Hampton 2, West Allegheny 1 – Xavier Ware scored on a penalty kick in the first overtime as No. 9 Hampton (12-3-3) defeated No. 8 West Allegheny (10-7) in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs. Mason Hall alo scored for Hampton while West Allegheny’s goal was scored by Josh Bohley. Hampton moves on to play the Belle Vernon/Moon winner in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 1, Freedom 0 – Brady Hernandez scored in overtime to lift No. 3 No. 3 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (13-2) past No. 14 Freedom (7-8-1) in the first round of the Class A playoffs. The Chargers advanced to play No. 6 Springdale in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Mars 4, Penn-Trafford 1 – Sean Scanlon had a pair of goals and Zack Angoff and AJ Montes each had a goal and an assist as No. 6 Mars (14-1-4) rallied from a 1-0 deficit to beat No. 11 Penn-Trafford (10-6-1) in the Class 3A first round. Mars will meet No. 14 Chartiers Valley in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Moon 6, Belle Vernon 0 – Evan Thomas had a pair of goals, Aedan Costa and Stephen Carvajal added a goal and an assist each and Fin Dengel and Zech Balbach also scored to lead No. 1 Moon (19-0) past No. 16 Belle Vernon (8-10) in the Class 3A first round, The Tigers will face No. 9 Hampton in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Thomas Jefferson 8, Armstrong 0 – In the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs, Jake Shoemaker scored two goals as No. 2 Thomas Jefferson (14-1-3) downed No. 15 Armstrong (9-9). Brayden Miller, Owen Householder, Dylan Legeza, Bryce Kameg, Logan Barron and Dipasn Khadka also scored and Sam Wessel, Luke Gisler and Joey Cortese combined on the shutout for the Jaguars, who will take on No. 7 Franklin Regional in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Trinity Christian 3, Beth-Center 0 – Cameron Wright, Will Van Haitsma and Luke Kost scored and Sasha Sansone picked up an assist as No. 9 Trinity Christian (11-4-1) took care of No. 8 Beth-Center (11-4-1) in a Class A first-round matchup. Trinity Christian will meet top-seeded Bentworth in Wednesday’s quarterfinals..

Winchester Thurston 9, Serra Catholic 0 – Michael Miller scored four goals to lead No. 2 Winchester Thurston (13-2-1) over No. 15 Serra Catholic (6-13) at UPMC Graham Field in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Winchester Thurston faces the Carlynton/Eden Christian winner in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.
