High school roundup: Quaker Valley returns to PIAA boys soccer final

Landon Grant and Franky Fernandez scored to lift WPIAL runner-up Quaker Valley to 2-0 victory over District 3 runner-up Oley Valley in the PIAA Class AA boys soccer semifinals Tuesday night at Chambersburg.

Fernandez also had an assist for the Quakers, who will play District 3 champion Lancaster Mennonite in the championship at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Hersheypark Stadium.

The five-time champion Quakers (22-2) lost to Lewisburg, 1-0, in last season's PIAA Class AA championship game.

Hempfield 3, Peters Township 2 (SO) — Bryce Gabelhart and Logan Brinsky scored in regulation, but WPIAL runner-up Peters Township (19-1-1) lost 5-4 in penalty kicks to fall short in to District 3 champion Hempfield a PIAA Class AAAA semifinal game at Mansion Park in Altoona.

Lower Dauphin 4, Montour 0 — At Mansion Park in Altoona, WPIAL champion Montour (18-4-1) had its season come to a close after a loss to District 3 champion Lower Dauphin.

CW North Catholic 1, Brockway 0 (OT) — Ryan Augustine scored with 5:20 left in overtime to give WPIAL champion Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (23-1) a victory in the PIAA Class A semifinals at Slippery Rock High School. The Trojans will face District 3 champion Camp Hill in the championship game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hersheypark Stadium.

Girls soccer

Moon 7, Villa Maria 1 — At Slippery Rock High School, defending PIAA champion Moon earned a return trip to the Class AAA state final with a convincing semifinal win over the District 10 champion. Delaney Snyder scored three goals, and Ana Molnar, Abby McEnroe, Mackenzie Sheldon and Kylee Evans also scored for the Tigers (25-0), who will play District 1 champion Villa Joseph Marie in the title game at 4 p.m. Saturday at Hersheypark Stadium.

Moon defeated Villa Joseph Marie, 2-1, in last year's PIAA title game.

Girls volleyball

North Allegheny 3, Garnett Valley 2 — WPIAL champion North Allegheny (23-0) overcame a two-set deficit to win a PIAA Class AAAA semifinal match against the District 1 fifth-place finisher at State College.

The Tigers, who won 25-27, 23-25, 25-19, 25-16, 20-18, advanced to their first PIAA championship match since 2008. They will play District 1 champion Bishop Shanahan at 5 p.m. Saturday at Richland High School in Johnstown.

Knoch 3, Montour 2 — WPIAL champion Knoch secured a 15-9 win in the deciding fifth set to earn a PIAA Class AAA semifinal win over WPIAL runner-up Montour at Seneca Valley. Knoch won the first set 25-19, but Montour answered to win 25-12. In Game 3, Knoch won 25-21, but again Montour answered, 25-22.

Knoch will play District 11 champion Allentown Central Catholic in the PIAA final at 3 p.m. Saturday at Richland High School in Johnstown.
