High school roundup: North Allegheny boys shut out Pine-Richland in PIAA first round

Lehigh recruit Josh Luchini netted a hat trick to help WPIAL champion North Allegheny earn a 5-0 victory over Pine-Richland in a PIAA Class AAAA first-round boys soccer playoff game at Fox Chapel on Tuesday night.

The Tigers (20-2-1) will play Peters Township in a WPIAL finals rematch Saturday in the PIAA quarterfinals at a time and site to be determined.

Pine-Richland finished the season 14-6-2.

Peters Township 1, McDowell 0 — Logan Brinsky scored the lone goal as WPIAL runner-up Peters Township (18-1-1) won a PIAA Class AAAA first-round game at Fairview. Derek Deyarmin posted the shutout.

West Allegheny 7, DuBois 0 — Evan Blunkosky scored twice and had and assist and Fletcher Amos, Nathan Dragosich, Nate Graziani, Connor Blazer and Jacob Schiefelbein also scored to lead West Allegheny (20-2-1) to a PIAA Class AAA first-round win at Clearfield.

Brayden Wurst made two saves to secure the shutout.

Montour 3, Hollidaysburg 0 — Seth Schleicher scored one goal and assisted on another as Montour (17-3-1) passed its first test in the PIAA playoffs with an opening-round victory over District 6 champ Hollidaysburg (12-9) at Hampton. Nolan Hutter and Brandon Wagner also scored goals for Montour.

Cathedral Prep 1, South Fayette 0 (OT) — Tyler VandeMerwe scored with 6:07 left in overtime to lead District 10 champ Cathedral Prep to a PIAA Class AAA first-round win over WPIAL third-place finisher South Fayette (15-6-2).

Shady Side Academy 3, Fairview 0 — Max Farner, Ben Ream and George Grune scored as WPIAL champion Shady Side Academy (14-7-1) won a PIAA Class AA first-round game at Seneca Valley. The Indians will face District 3's Oley Valley in the quarterfinals.

Quaker Valley 8, St. Marys 0 — Frankie Fernandez tallied five goals as Quaker Valley (20-2) rolled to a PIAA Class AA first-round victory over the District 9 champion at Brockway.

Beaver 1, Mercyhurst Prep 0 — Zach Bowser scored early in the second half to lift WPIAL third-place finisher Beaver (10-9-3) to a PIAA Class AA first-round win over the District 10 champion at Prep Villa Events Center. Beaver will play Quaker Valley in the quarterfinals.

CW North Catholic 5, Port Allegany 0 — Joe Kearney scored three times and Bryce Kopchak and Ryan Augustine also scored to lift WPIAL champion Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (21-1) to a PIAA Class A first-round win at Moon.

Brockway 3, Seton LaSalle 2 — Tino Inzana scored with less than 2 minutes to play to give District 9 champion Brockway a PIAA Class A first-round win over Seton LaSalle (18-4-1) at DuBois.

Girls soccer

Moon 7, Hollidaysburg 0 — Delany Snyder scored five goals to power unbeaten WPIAL champion Moon (23-0) past District 6 champion Hollidaysburg (15-5-1) in a PIAA first-round game at Hampton. Snyder, a Miami (Ohio) recruit, scored all three first-half goals for defending state champion Moon and has 50 goals for the season. Abigael McEnroe and Sarah McAllister accounted for Moon's other goals.

Mars 7, DuBois 1 — Maggie Williams scored twice, and Megan Zukowski, Taylor Hamlett, Ellie Coffield, Kaitlyn Pietrusinski and Caroline Wroblewski also scored as WPIAL runner-up Mars (17-2) won a PIAA Class AAA first-round game at Clearfield.

Villa Maria 3, South Park 1 — Carly Pcholinsky scored for WPIAL third-place finisher South Park (17-4-1), but the Eagles lost to the District 10 champion in the PIAA Class AAA first round at Fairview.

Waynesburg 6, Harbor Creek 0 — Rhea Kijowski had three goals, and Madison Clayton had two goals and two assists as WPIAL champion Waynesburg (20-1) rolled to a PIAA Class AA first-round win at Seneca Valley. Kylie Sinn also scored for the Raiders, who will play District 5 champion Bedford in the quarterfinals.

Karns City 2, Freedom 1 — WPIAL runner-up Freedom (19-2) had its season come to a close with a loss to the District 9 champion in the PIAA Class AA first round at Clarion University.

CW North Catholic 2, Ridgway 0 — Julia Bukowski and Ella Biedler scored as WPIAL third-place finisher Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (17-5) won a PIAA Class A first-round game at Brockway. The Trojanettes will play Shady Side Academy in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Shady Side Academy 6, Wilmington 0 — Callie Davis scored twice to pace WPIAL runner-up Shady Side Academy (14-4) in a PIAA Class A first-round game at Slippery Rock High School. The Indians will play Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in the quarterfinals Saturday. Krystyna Rytel, Sophia McMahon and Trinity Murphy also scored for SSA.

Girls volleyball

General McLane 3, Thomas Jefferson 2 — District 10 champion General McLane won 15-10 in the fifth set to secure a victory over WPIAL third-place finisher Thomas Jefferson in a PIAA Class AAA first-round match at Meadville.

Knoch 3, Somerset 0 — In the Class AAA first round at Butler, WPIAL champion Knoch earned a 25-17, 25-14, 25-11 victory over the District 5 champion. Sarah Arnahizer had 12 kills, Hannah Rowe had nine kills and Kerri Fitzpatrick had 18 service points and 29 assists.

Montour 3, DuBois 0 — WPIAL runner-up Montour swept District 9 champion DuBois, 25-18, 25-19, 25-14, in a PIAA Class AAA first-round match at Punxsutawney.

Beaver 3, Sharpsville 0 — In Class AA, WPIAL champion Beaver earned a 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 win over the District 10 runner-up in a PIAA first-round match at Butler.

Serra Catholic 3, Kane 0 — WPIAL fourth-place finisher Serra Catholic earned a 25-7, 25-14, 25-14 win over District 9 champion Kane in the PIAA Class AA first round at St. Marys.

Otto-Eldred 3, Frazier 1 — District 9 champion Otto-Eldred earned a PIAA Class A first-round win over WPIAL third-place finisher Frazier, 20-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-20.
