High school roundup for Oct. 10, 2024: Avonworth clinches 2nd straight section title

Rowan Carmichael had two goals and an assist to lead Avonworth to a 4-1 victory over Beaver on Thursday night, clinching the Section 2-2A title for the second straight season.

Nathan Kline and Abdul Basit Sleiman Kaijie also scored and Calder Mahan dished out two assists for the Antelopes (14-2-2, 14-1-1). Anthony Furda scored for the Bobcats (8-7-1, 7-7-1).

Allderdice 1, Latrobe 0 (OT) – Niv Friedman scored off a feed from Jacek Piekut as Allderdice (9-3-1) edged past Latrobe (11-4) in nonsection play.

Beaver County Christian 6, Sewickley Academy 3 – Tyler Guevara, Eli Bosch, Zach Stephens, Ben Crefeld, Robert McMahan and Kian Wilsey scored to help Beaver County Christian (12-3, 8-2) top Sewickley Academy (8-8-1, 5-4-1) in Section 1-A.

Beth-Center 6, California 0 – Parker Amos scored six goals and Rylan Piper dished out two assists to lead Beth-Center (10-3-1, 5-3) to a Section 2-A win over California (1-8, 1-7). Luke Amon kept a clean sheet for the Bulldogs.

Burrell 1, Highlands 0 – Luke Postupack scored off of a Billy Kowalkowski corner kick and Ben Doland picked up the shutout in goal as Burrell (7-9, 7-6) clinched a playoff spot with a Section 1-2A win over Highlands (5-8-1, 4-8-1).

Canon-McMillan 1, Upper St. Clair 1 (OT) – Michael Oliverio scored for Upper St. Clair (10-4-2, 7-2-1) and Gavin Patterson had a goal for Canon-McMillan (9-4-2, 5-4-1) in a Section 2-4A draw.

Charleroi 11, Derry 1 – Dylan Klinger scored five goals and Landon Barcus recorded a hat trick to power Charleroi (14-0, 13-0) to a Section 4-2A win over Derry (4-12, 3-10). Blake Pendo scored a pair of goals and Ethan Hartley tacked on a goal for the Cougars, who locked up a section title with the victory.

Deer Lakes 6, Freeport 0 – Cuyler Crim scored two goals and Collin Rodgers, Artemis Parshyn, Connor Moore and Peyton Kushon added a goal apiece as Deer Lakes (14-2-1, 12-1) clinched the Section 1-2A title with a win over Freeport (7-7-2, 4-6-2).

Elizabeth Forward 4, Ligonier Valley 1 – Luca Valerio and Aidan Davis scored two goals apiece to lead Elizabeth Forward (12-3-1, 11-1-1) past Ligonier Valley (8-8, 5-8) in a Section 3-2A win.

Fox Chapel 3, North Allegheny 2 (OT) – Aidan Stein completed his hat trick with the overtime winner, lifting Fox Chapel (9-3-1, 7-2) past North Allegheny (13-3-1, 8-2) in a matchup of the top teams in Section 3-4A.

Gateway 4, Hempfield 0 – Cam Simon scored twice, James LoCoco had a goal and two assists and Ryan Helman also scored to lead Gateway (8-7, 5-5) past Hempfield (5-11, 2-8) in Section 1-4A.

Greensburg Central Catholic 10, Chartiers-Houston 0 – Jackson Vacanti had four goals and three assists to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (5-7-1, 5-3) past Chartiers-Houston (1-14, 1-7) in Section 2-A. Lucca Denis had two goals and two assists, Grant Brewer added two goals and an assist and Michael Hegyes and Andrew McIntyre also scored. Isaac House made two saves to record the shutout.

Indiana 1, Hampton 0 – Tim Birch scored the winning goal as Indiana (14-2, 9-2) edged out Hampton (9-3-3, 6-2-3) in Section 1-3A.

Mars 2, Knoch 1 – Miles Frazier and Frank Knezovich scored a goal apiece to boost Mars (12-1-3, 8-1-2) past Knoch (7-9, 4-6) in Section 1-3A.

Moon 7, Chartiers Valley 0 – Aedan Costa and Evan Thomas had two goals and an assist apiece for Moon (16-0, 11-0) in a Section 4-3A win over Chartiers Valley (8-7, 7-4). Zech Balbach, Luiz Silva and Noah Masry also scored for the Tigers.

Mt. Pleasant 6, Southmoreland 1 – Aidan Johnson collected two goals and an assist to lead Mt. Pleasant (12-5, 11-2) over Southmoreland (10-7, 8-5) in Section 4-2A. Bryce Heinbaugh had a goal and two assists, Aydan Gross added a goal and an assist and Zachariah Livingston and Bryce Gamble also scored for the Vikings.

Neshannock 1, South Side 1 – Zayden Herb scored for Neshannock (8-5-2, 3-5-2) and Walker Sherwin scored for South Side (2-12-1, 0-9-1) in a Section 1-A draw.

North Catholic 13, Leechburg 1 – Arthur Mendonca collected three goals and two assists and Justin Garvey also scored a hat trick to lead North Catholic (13-3, 11-2) Section 1-2A win over Leechburg (1-15, 1-12). Kelden Hufnagel added a pair of goals and Austin English had a goal and two assists for the Trojans.

Peters Township 6, Woodland Hills 1 – Jeven Kelly and Anthony Maiello each scored a pair of goals and Brett Martin and Alex Parise also scored as Peters Township (14-1-1, 10-0) finished section play undefeated with a Section 2-4A win over Woodland Hills (5-9, 2-8).

Ringgold 1, South Fayette 0 – Jack Brodak scored for Ringgold (9-5-1, 8-3-1) in a Section 2-3A win over South Fayette (7-9, 7-6).

Riverview 2, St. Joseph 0 – Chris O’Toole and Dev Murphy each had a goal and an assist as Riverview (10-6, 5-5) wrapped up Section 4-A play with a win over St. Joseph (3-12, 1-9).

Seneca Valley 5, North Hills 3 – Tyler Prex scored four goals and Tyler Kuhar added another as Seneca Valley (11-5, 6-4) defeated North Hills (10-7, 4-5) in Section 3-4A.

Thomas Jefferson 1, Trinity 1 (OT) – Braydon Miller scored for Thomas Jefferson (10-1-3, 9-1-3) and Andy Palm had a goal for Trinity (8-5-3, 8-3-2) in a Section 2-3A draw.

Waynesburg 1, Yough 0 (OT) – Isaac McCartney scored an unassisted goal for Waynesburg (6-7-1, 6-6-1) in the first overtime for a Section 4-2A win over Yough (4-10-2, 4-7-2).

West Allegheny 4, Blackhawk 0 – Chris Pons had a first half hat trick and Aaron Bouch netted a goal as West Allegheny (9-6, 8-3) blanked Blackhawk (0-10-1, 0-9-1) in Section 4-3A. Mack Santoro kept a clean sheet for the Indians.

Girls soccer

Deer Lakes 1, North Hills 0 – Clare Cacurak scored and Mikayla Potter recorded the shutout to lead Deer Lakes (11-3-2) to a nonsection win over North Hills (3-14).

Obama Academy 5, Brashear 0 – Brooklyn Potter scored a pair of goals and Lucy Caroff recorded the shutout for Obama academy (3-11-1) in a nonsection win. Nahlah Brice, Adjoa Dakwa and Orli Trumbull also scored.

Hockey

Bethel Park 1, Upper St. Clair 0 – Vincent Klingensmith scored the winning goal and Kevin Teamann stopped all 24 shots he faced to lift Bethel Park (1-1) to a Class 3A win. Owen Laurent made 25 saves for Upper St. Clair (0-1-1).

Burrell 6, Morgantown 5 – Luke Mink scored a pair of goals and had an assist as Burrell (1-0-1) fought back from a 3-1 deficit to beat Morgantown (1-1) in Division 2 play. Landon Johnson, Forrest Baird, Mike Morazcyzk and Julian Kemp each added a goal for the Bucs. Ayden Shepard recorded a hat trick while Jacob Hollander and Geno Valenti each netted a goal for Morgantown.

Connellsville 4, Ringgold 1 – Sam Denny scored a pair of goals to pace Connellsville (2-0) in a Division 2 win against Ringgold (1-1). Alex Boone and Matty Smith Jr. each added a goal for the Falcons. Caden Doran scored for the Rams.

Elizabeth Forward 11, Sewickley Academy 1 – Bobby Boord Jr. and Luke Forbes each scored hat tricks and Cam Thompson buried a pair of goals as Elizabeth Forward (2-1) cruised to a Division 2 win against Sewickley Academy (0-3). Blake Hvozdik, Cameron Napoli and Josh Jackovic each added a goal for EF. Mario Thomas scored for Sewickley.

Franklin Regional 7, Central Catholic 2 – Nick Matus scored a hat trick while Max Williams and Ryan Crouse each scored twice as Franklin Regional (2-0) cruised to a Class 3A win over Central Catholic (1-1-1). Noah Hritz and Nate Morgan were the goal scorers for Central Catholic.

Indiana 5, Freeport 2 – Ryan Bell scored twice and Joe mains, Tyler Yount and Zdeno Dzuro added goals to lead Indiana (3-1) to a Class A win. Tyler Hileman and Zach Bowser scored for Freeport (0-1).

Latrobe 4, Armstrong 1 – Joey Crimboli scored a hat trick and Dylan Morris added a goal for Latrobe (1-1) in a Class 2A win over Armstrong (0-1-1). Aiden Morando was the goal scorer for Armstrong.

Meadville 3, Beaver 2 (OT) – Evan Peterson scored the overtime winner short-handed to lead Meadville (1-2) to a Class A win. Robert Mahoney and Ryan Yunik each had a goal and an assist for Meadville. Mike Derda had a goal and an assist and Brooke Goulder also scored for Beaver (0-1-1).

Seneca Valley 7, Pine-Richland 2 – Jimmy Murtha scored four goals, Cooper Hoehn had a goal and an assist and Andrew Malichku dished out three assists to lead Seneca Valley (2-0) to a Class 3A win. AJ Verszyla had a goal and an assist for Pine-Richland (1-1).

Shaler 5, McDowell 2 – Darius Malecki scored twice to lead Shaler (3-0) to a Class A win. Bradyn Whiteman, Dylan Marsden and Jacob Skerlong each added a goal for Shaler. Harrison Parra and Wendall Natividad scored for McDowell (0-3).

Field hockey

Pine-Richland 11, Norwin 0 – Maggie Campbell scored a hat trick and Madeline Mill had five assists to power Pine-Richland (16-0, 10-0) to a shutout win in Class 3A over Norwin (3-9, 2-7).

Girls volleyball

Albert Gallatin 3, Elizabeth Forward 2 – Leah Myers had 14 kills, Mia Myers added nine kills and Mya Glisan had six kills and seven aces to lead Albert Gallatin (7-8, 4-7) to a Section 3-3A win over Elizabeth Forward (3-15, 2-8).

Beaver 3, Central Valley 0 – Kailyn Connelly had a season-high 27 kills, Aubrey Bumblis had 18 digs and Zoe Ringer had 37 assists and eight digs for Beaver (13-3, 8-0) in a Section 4-3A win over Central Valley (4-9, 3-4).

Canon-McMillan 3, Baldwin 0 – Cali Dagen had 16 kills and 12 digs, Natalie Carr added 14 kills and seven digs and Brooke Peters had 27 assists for Canon-McMillan (13-1, 8-0) in a Section 1-4A win over Baldwin (3-10, 1-7).

Carmichaels 3, Avella 0 – Pacey Pratt had 14 kills and Bailey Barnyak and Brenna Walker added seven kills apiece for Carmichaels (10-6, 8-0) in a Section 3-A win over Avella (1-13, 0-8)

Frazier 3, Trinity Christian 0 – Allie Monack had 11 kills and Grace Vaughn added eight kills to lead Frazier (11-3, 8-0) past Trinity Christian (6-10, 3-5). Gracen Hartman handed out 22 assists, Addison Hiles recorded nine digs and Addison Day had 10 service points.

Hempfield 3, Connellsville 0 – Shelby Waryanka served up nine aces to lead Hempfield (8-5, 6-2) past Connellsville (2-13, 0-8) in Section 3-4A.

Mars 3, Valley 0 – Cecilia Christy, Rylee Wooldridge and Ella Nicotra combined for 38 kills and Gabi Weidemann dished out 39 assists to lead Mars (12-4, 8-0) to a sweep of Valley (1-12, 0-8) in a Section 2-3A match.

South Allegheny 3, Sto-Rox 0 – Madison Taylor had six aces and four kills while Ally Chizmar added four aces and three kills to lead South Allegheny (14-4, 10-2) to a Section 2-2A win over Sto-Rox (0-15, 0-12).

St. Joseph 3, Springdale 0 – Kenzie Jones had eight kills and Kate Giannetta added four kills and four aces to help St. Joseph (13-2, 8-0) past Springdale (2-10, 2-6) in Section 1-A.

Girls tennis

Quaker Valley 5, Indiana 0 – The No. 2 doubles team of Kate Miller and Parker Barnes won a three-set match to help No. 2 Quaker Valley to a sweep of No. 10 Indiana in the WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinals. Kirsten Close, Avery Allan and Jay Olawaiye and the No. 1 doubles team of Livia Jobbins and Jane Lenhard won in straight sets for the Quakers.

Hampton 5, Beaver 0 – No. 3 Hampton won all five matches in straight sets in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Grace Stitt, Abigail Anderson and Arianna Barbera won in singles and the teams of McKenna Restori/Ellery Robertson and Madison Holleran/Mackenzie Jones picked up doubles wins for the Talbots.

In other quarterfinals, No. 1 North Catholic beat No. 9 Winchester Thurston, 5-0, and No. 5 Oakland Catholic got past No. 4 Sewickley Academy, 3-2.

In Monday’s semifinals, North Catholic will meet Oakland Catholic and Hampton will face Quaker Valley.
