High school roundup for Nov. 9, 2024: Mars girls avenge loss, move on to PIAA semifinals

Meredith Ashbaugh scored in the game’s opening minutes and the Fightin’ Planets defense made it hold up, leading Mars to a 1-0 victory over WPIAL champion South Fayette (20-4) in the PIAA Class 3A girls soccer quarterfinals Saturday.

Mars (20-3), the third-place finisher from the WPIAL, lost 1-0 on penalty kicks to South Fayette in the district semifinals. The Fightin’ Planets will take on District 3 champion Lower Dauphin in the semifinals Tuesday.

Cathedral Prep 2, North Catholic 1 – Brooklyn DiRaimo and Olivia Dixon scored to lead District 10 champ Cathedral Prep to a Class 2A quarterfinal victory. Lauren Mealie scored to give North Catholic (17-5) a 1-0 lead.

Conestoga 2, Seneca Valley 0 – Lauren Grimes and Kate Kemmerley scored second-half goals to lead Conestoga (21-3), the fifth-place finisher from District 1, to a Class 4A quarterfinal victory over WPIAL runner-up Seneca Valley (15-4-2).

Quaker Valley 3, Camp Hill Trinity 0 – Mia Modrovich had two goals and assisted on Hope Waller’s goal as Quaker Valley (19-2-2) beat Camp Hill Trinity (16-6) in the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinals at Westmont Hilltop. Quaker Valley will play Cathedral Prep on Tuesday in the semifinals.

Seton LaSalle 1, Karns City 0 – Elizabeth Sokos scored the game’s only goal with an assist by Sydney Morgan as Seton LaSalle (17-3-2) beat Karns City (17-5) In the PIAA Class A quarterfinals at North Allegheny. Goalkeeper Regan Mazur recorded the shutout for Seton LaSalle, which plays Springdale in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Boys soccer

Avonworth 2, Fairview 1 – Rowan Carmichael scored in regulation and converted his attempt in the penalty kick shootout to lead Avonworth (19-3-2) to a Class 2A quarterfinal win over District 10 champion Fairview (20-3). Abdul Basit Sleiman Kaijie assisted on Carmichael’s goal and also made his PK. Calder Mahan, Ethan Szakelyhidi and Ben Hayes also made their attempts as the Antelopes won the shootout, 5-4. Justin Beck was the winning goalkeeper. Avonworth will meet Cathedral Prep in the semifinals Tuesday.

Bentworth 1, Mercyhurst Prep 0 – Ryan Moessner scored a first-half goal off of a pass from Andrew Vipperman as Bentworth (21-0) shut out Mercyhurst Prep (16-7) at Grove City in the PIAA Class A quarterfinals. Bentworth advances to the semifinals Tuesday to play McConnellsburg.

Cumberland Valley 3, Plum 0 – Chayse Snyder scored twice, including once on a penalty kick, to lead District 3 champion Cumberland Valley to a 3-0 victory over Plum (18-2-3) in the PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals Saturday. Jayden Handy also scored and Michael Hoy and Connor Lindsay combined on the shutout.

Moon 2, Allderdice 1 – Luis Silva headed in the winning goal in the first overtime to lead WPIAL champ Moon (24-0) to a Class 3A quarterfinal win. Marc Haupt also scored for the Tigers, who will meet District 3 champion Conrad Weiser in the semifinals Tuesday. Ethan Voight-Cherna scored for Allderdice (14-5-1).

McConnellsburg 2, OLSH 0 – Shaffer Earley and Jaron Fletcher scored to lead DIstrict 5 champion McConnellsburg (19-3-1) past OLSH (16-4) in the Class A quarterfinals.

Girls volleyball

Beaver 3, Greencastle-Antrim 0 In the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinals, Beaver (20-4) defeated Greencastle-Antrim (20-3), 25-17, 25-16, 25-9. Beaver faces Mars in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Cathedral Prep 3, Southmoreland 0 – Cathedral Prep (17-5) defeated Southmoreland (17-6) for the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinal win at Sharon. Scores were 25-11, 25-19, 25-15.

Frazier 3, Clarion 0 – Frazier (17-4) swept Clarion (13-5) by scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-15 in the PIAA Class A quarterfinals at North Allegheny. Maddie Salisbury had 12 kills and three blocks for Frazier while teammate Gracen Hartman had 22 assists.

Greensburg Central Catholic 3, West Branch 0 – In Johnstown, Greensburg Central Catholic (19-3) swept West Branch (17-2) by scores of 25-9, 26-24, 25-22 to advance to the PIAA Class A semifinals for the first time since 2016. The Centurions will face Frazier in the semifinals Tuesday in a rematch of the WPIAL finals, which the Centurions won, 3-0.

Mars 3, Hampton 2 Mars (20-4) outlasted Hampton (15-7) in five sets – 19-25, 25-22, 29-27, 25-27, 15-10 – for the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinal win at North Allegheny. Mars’ Cecilia Christy had 22 kills and four blocks, Gabi Weidemann recorded 53 assists and Alaina Graham contributed 23 digs.

North Allegheny 3, Bishop Shanahan 1 – At Penn State Altoona, North Allegheny (19-1) defeated Bishop Shanahan (21-3) in the PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals. North Allegheny, which won 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-21, will face undefeated Landisville Hempfield in the semifinals Tuesday.

Football

Clearfield 34, University Prep 24 – Brady Collins scored on an 85-yard kickoff return and a 41-yard run to lead Clearfield (11-0) in the PIAA Class 3A subregional Saturday. Dai’mere Adair threw three touchdown passes – two to Zion Hauser and one to Micah Saunders – and also ran for a score for University Prep (4-6).

USO pulled to within 27-24 on a 50-yard pass from Adair to Hauser in the fourth quarter but Clearfield put the game away with a 51-yard TD run by Carter Freeland.
