High school roundup for Nov. 12, 2024: Moon lands in state title game for 1st time since ’85

Luis Silva scored the winning goal 15 minutes into the second half to lead WPIAL champion Moon to a 1-0 victory over District 3 champion Conrad Weiser (23-2) in the PIAA Class 3A boys soccer semifinals Tuesday.

Silva also scored the winning goal in overtime in Moon’s 2-1 victory over Allderdice in the PIAA quarterfinals. The undefeated Tigers (25-0) will face District 1 champ Radnor (20-3) in the state finals at 10 a.m. Friday in Mechanicsburg. It will be the second state finals appearance for the Moon boys program, which lost to Council Rock in 1985.

Cathedral Prep 4, Avonworth 3 – Brandon Lin scored the game-winning goal, Max Johnson added a pair of goals and Ethan Cain also scored as Cathedral Prep (18-6) got past Avonworth (19-4-2) in a back-and-forth Class 2A semifinal. Nathan Kline, Calder Mahan and Tucker Jeremias scored for the Antelopes, who tied the score the first three times Cathedral Prep took a one-goal lead. Cathedral Prep will face Northwestern Lehigh (24-0) in the finals at 4 p.m. Saturday in Mechanicsburg.

Girls soccer

Cathedral Prep 1, Quaker Valley 0 – Olivia Dixon scored off a CC Cacchione corner kick 26 minutes into the second half to lead District 10 champion Cathedral Prep (20-2-1) past WPIAL champ Quaker Valley (19-3-2) in the Class 2A semifinals. Cathedral Prep will meet Northwestern Lehigh (24-0) in the state finals at 7 p.m. Saturday in Mechanicsburg.

Lower Dauphin 4, Mars 0 – Old Dominion recruit Ashley Economopoulos had two goals, Adrienne DeBock and Bella Tran also scored and Nahla Raab recorded the shutout as District 3 champion Lower Dauphin (22-2) defeated Mars (20-4) in the Class 3A semifinals. Lower Dauphin will meet Strath Haven (19-4) in the finals at 1 p.m. Friday in Mechanicsburg.

Girls volleyball

North Allegheny 3, Hempfield 0 – North Allegheny’s bid for an eighth consecutive PIAA championship is going strong after a 26-24, 25-15, 25-19 victory over undefeated District 3 champion Landisville Hempfield in the Class 4A semifinals. The Tigers (20-1) will face Spring-Ford (21-7) in the state finals at 6 p.m. Saturday at Cumberland Valley.

Hockey

Armstrong 4, Canon-McMillan 2 – Jake Graff scored a hat trick and Jason Rullo had a goal and three assists to lead Armstrong (4-2) to a Class 2A victory. Michael Traynor and Carson O’Donoghue scored for Canon-McMillan (3-4).

Bishop McCort 3, Fox Chapel 2 – Sammy Treager scored the game-winning goal with 6:10 left in regulation to lead Bishop McCort to a 3-2 victory over Fox Chapel in PIHL Class 2A hockey Tuesday night. Mark Pazniak and Brady Dolgas also scored for Bishop McCort (2-4-1). Liam Wiseman and Parker Haberman scored for Fox Chapel (3-1-1).

Connellsville 4, Central Valley 1 – Alex Boone had a goal and an assist and Landon Garlick, Hunter Garlick and Logan Hause also scored to lead Connellsville (5-1) in Division 2. Gage Helbig scored for Central Valley (2-4).

Plum 8, Westmont Hilltop 2 – Scott Pushic, Max Keller, Connor Reilly and AJ Leah each had a goal and an assist and Rylan Schoonover, Tyler Bresso, Anthony Smith and Will Amen also scored to power Plum (3-5) to a Class A victory. Colby Carson scored twice for Westmont Hilltop (0-7-1).

Trinity 7, Bishop Canevin 2 – Seamus Coyle scored four goals, Cale Bitz had a goal and an assist and Bobby Daddea and Destin Porter also added goals for Trinity (2-5-1) in a Division 2 win. Jack Misterka and Brian Kalanish scored for Bishop Canevin (3-2).

Wheeling Park 6, North Catholic 4 – Owen Abraham scored a hat trick, Sam Kiger had a goal and an assist and Cooper Abraham dished out three assists to lead Wheeling Park (4-1-1) to a Class A win. Anthony Neely and Connor Bradrick each had a goal and an assist for North Catholic (5-2).
