High school roundup for Nov. 11, 2023: Moon, Mars to meet in girls soccer semifinals

Lilly Snyder scored with 23 minutes left in the second half to lift Moon to a 1-0 victory over Northern York in the PIAA Class 3A girls soccer quarterfinals Saturday at Westmont Elementary in Johnstown.

It was the first loss of the season for District 3 champion Northern York (20-1-1). Serayah Leech preserved the shutout. Moon (17-2-2), the defending state champ, advances to face Mars in the PIAA semifinals Tuesday.

Mars 2, Montour 1 (OT) – Kayleigh Clark and Ainsley Ray scored as Mars (19-1) defeated Montour (15-4-1) in the Class 3A semifinals to set up an eagerly anticipated semifinal matchup with Moon on Tuesday. Caitlyn Sill scored for Montour.

Conestoga 3, Fox Chapel 2 – Lauren Grimes scored the winning goal with 2:05 left in regulation as District 1 runner-up Conestoga rallied from two goals down at halftime to defeat WPIAL champion Fox Chapel in the Class 4A quarterfinals. Maddie Grimsley and Emily McKee scored for Fox Chapel (14-5-2). Conestoga (20-3) will meet WPIAL runner-up North Allegheny in the state semifinals Tuesday.

North Allegheny 3, Central Dauphin 2 Jadyn Coy scored with less than five minutes left in the second half to lift North Allegheny (22-1) to a Class 4A quarterfinal win over Central Dauphin (22-1) at Mansion Park in Altoona. Allyson Ruiz had two goals for North Allegheny while Makenna Kirk scored both Central Dauphin goals. North Allegheny will face Conestoga in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Avonworth 6, Clearfield 0 – Fiona Mahan had three goals and three assists to lead Avonworth (21-1-2) over Clearfield in the Class 2A quarterfinals at Westmont Elementary in Johnstown. Gianna Babusci added two goals while Elena Zimmerman posted the shutout. Avonworth will play Shady Side Academy in the semifinals Tuesday.

Shady Side Academy 2, South Park 1 – Sadie Navid’s overtime goal gave Shady Side Academy (17-5-1) the Class 2A quarterfinal win over South Park (17-7) at Montour. The Bulldogs will face Avonworth in a WPIAL finals rematch in the PIAA semifinals Tuesday.

Bishop Guilfoyle 2, Freedom 0 – Bishop Guilfoyle (21-1) shut out Freedom (20-4) in the Class A quarterfinals at Norwin. The loss snapped a 16-game winning streak for WPIAL champion Freedom. Bishop Guilfoyle will meet Riverview in the state semifinals Tuesday.

Boys soccer

Cathedral Prep 2, South Fayette 0 – James DiSanza scored in the first half, Noah Handzel added an insurance goal and Tyler Chermak recorded the shutout as Cathedral Prep (17-3-1) shut out WPIAL champion South Fayette (14-5-3) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. Cathedral Prep will meet Hershey in the semifinals Tuesday.

Central Bucks South 2, North Allegheny 0 – In Chambersburg, Central Bucks South (18-5-2) shut out North Allegheny (17-3-3) in the Class 4A quarterfinals, earning a semifinal matchup with Norwin on Tuesday.

Charleroi 1, Tulpehocken 0 (OT) – Bryce Larged scored the overtime winner as WPIAL runner-up Charleroi (21-1) defeated District 3 runner-up Tulpehocken (20-3) in the Class A quarterfinals. The Cougars will face Bentworth in a WPIAL finals rematch in the PIAA semifinals Tuesday.

Hershey 3, Hampton 1 – Riley Schmidt, Cole Goodman and Niklas Budde scored to lead District 3 champ Hershey (22-0) to a Class 3A quarterfinal win. Coleman Docherty scored for Hampton (18-4-1). Hershey will take on Cathedral Prep in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Quaker Valley 2, Shady Side Academy 1 – Tanner Shultz’s second-half goal gave Quaker Valley (19-4) the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinal win over Shady Side Academy (16-6-1) at Montour. Nick Allan also scored for the Quakers, who will play Central Columbia in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Girls volleyball

Beaver 3, Quaker Valley 1 – Beaver (22-0) overcame a first-set loss to defeat Quaker Valley (17-4), 22-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-14, in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Beaver will face Philipsburg-Osceola in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Elk County Catholic 3, Serra Catholic 0 – Elk County Catholic (19-0) won in straight sets, 25-23, 29-27, 25-16, for a Class A quarterfinal win over Serra Catholic (21-1) in Punxsutawney. Elk County Catholic will face Maplewood in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Hampton 3, Bald Eagle 0 – WPIAL champion Hampton (23-0) remained unbeaten with another three-set victory, defeating Bald Eagle Area (19-3) in the Class 3A quarterfinals, 25-11, 25-16, 25-1. The Talbot will take on North Catholic in the semifinals Tuesday.

Landisville Hempfield 3, Canon-McMillan 1 – At Altoona, Landisville Hempfield (20-0) defeated Canon-McMillan (16-5), 25-14, 25-18, 19-25, 25-21, in the PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals. Natalie Carr led Canon Mac with 15 kills. Abby Tucker added 10 kills, Josie Carter dished out 18 assists and Julia Murdy recorded 15 digs.

Maplewood 3, Bishop Canevin 0 – In the Class A quarterfinals at Slippery Rock, Maplewood (18-3) swept Bishop Canevin (20-3), 28-26, 25-19, 26-24. Maplewood will take on Elk County Catholic in Tuesday’s semifinals.

North Allegheny 3, Dallastown 1 – North Allegheny (18-1) defeated Dallastown (23-3), 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-18, in Altoona to pick up the Class 4A quarterfinal win. The Tigers will face Landisville Hempfield in the semifinals Tuesday.

North Catholic 3, Thomas Jefferson 0 – North Catholic (20-1) defeated Thomas Jefferson (18-3) in three sets, 25-13, 25-20, 25-21, in the Class 3A quarterfinals at North Allegheny. North Catholic faces Hampton in the semifinals Tuesday in a rematch of the WPIAL finals.

Football

Meadville 22, University Prep 18 – Jordan Lawrence scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 7-yard run with 5:15 to play as District 10 champion Meadville (9-2) defeated City League runner-up University Prep (7-4) in a PIAA Class 4A subregional game.
