High school roundup for May 7, 2019: South Fayette locks up playoff berth

Richie Dell hit a three-run home run, and Ryan McGuire knocked in two runs to help South Fayette earn a WPIAL playoff berth with an 8-4 victory over North Hills (3-14, 2-8) in a Section 2-5A baseball game Tuesday afternoon.

Ryan Kokoski struck out seven batters in four innings to secure the win. Joey Alcorn was 3 for 3 and notched the save for the Lions (11-6, 5-5). The WPIAL baseball playoff brackets will be released at noon Friday on the TribLive High School Sports Network.

Pine-Richland 2, Seneca Valley 1 (8 inn.) — Jake Maley drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning to give No. 2 Pine-Richland (14-4, 9-1) a Section 1-6A win. Matt Wood, Josh Johnson and Josh Scherer all had two hits for the Rams.

Trinity 6, Carrick 0 — Michael Parrish homered, and Jared Watson had two doubles to help Trinity (10-10, 6-6) win in Section 3-5A. Forrest Havanis threw a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts.

North Catholic 7, Shady Side Academy 4 — Ryan Feczko was 3 for 5 with a double as North Catholic (5-10, 5-6) won in Section 2-3A.

Brownsville 7, Burgettstown 5 — DJ Zimcosky had a double and three RBIs, and Michael Petrock doubled and tripled to help Brownsville (11-4, 7-4) win in Section 1-2A.

Riverside 11, Mohawk 5 – Riverside (7-8, 5-7) scored nine runs in the sixth inning to earn a Section 2-2A win. Drew Speicher knocked in three runs, and Dante Phillips and Kevin Kolesar each had two RBIs.

Bishop Canevin 1, Quigley Catholic 0 — Nevan Crossey’s seventh-inning single lifted Bishop Canevin (8-7, 6-5) to a Section 1-A win.

Vincentian Academy 7, Clairton 5 — David Kelly knocked in four runs to lead No. 1 Vincentian Academy (11-0, 10-0) to a Section 3-A win.

Baldwin 12, Keystone Oaks 3 — Andy Sopata tripled, homered and had three RBIs, and Nick Dolan homered as Baldwin (7-8) won a nonsection game. Noah Fischer had three RBIs in the win.

Southmoreland 11, Washington 1 (5 inn.) — Anthony Govern threw a three-hitter with seven strikeouts as Southmoreland (3-13, 1-10) won in Section 3-3A. In the other game of a doubleheader, Hunter Amos had three hits to lead Washington (3-13, 1-10). Ryan Marchewka doubled for the Scotties.

Greensburg Central Catholic 18, Springdale 2 (6 inn.) — Ben LaCarte was 4 for 4, Tom Voelker was 4 for 5 with three RBIs and Paul Rice knocked in three runs as No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic (8-8, 7-2) won in Section 3-A. LaCarte earned the victory.

Latrobe 2, Ligonier Valley 1 — Connor Mondock was 3 for 4, and Matt Henderson tossed a one-hitter with five strikeouts as Latrobe (8-10) won a nonsection game.

Norwin 12, Derry 2 (6 inn.) — Nick Flemming was 4 for 5 with a double, home run and five RBIs to lead Norwin (12-6) to a nonsection win.

Zack Karaschak and Ryan Bushey had two hits apiece for Derry (6-11).

Freeport 14, East Allegheny 2 (5 inn.) — The Yellowjackets (12-5, 9-2) scored 10 runs in the fourth inning. Matt Grove went 3 for 4 with five RBIs, and Zack Allen went 4 for 4 in a Section 1-3A game.

Deer Lakes 14, East Allegheny 7 — A big fourth inning propelled Deer Lakes (11-7, 9-2) to a Section 1-3A win. Drew Pavlik’s two-run single and Greg Geis’ solo homer helped the Lancers score eight runs in the inning.

Burrell 7, South Allegheny 0 — Luke Virag was 4 for 4 with two doubles and a solo homer for Class 3A No. 4 Burrell (10-4, 7-4) in a Section 1 win at South Allegheny (2-14, 1-10). Tyler Mock had three hits including a double and drove in three runs for the Bucs.

Riverview 7, Brentwood 4 — Luke Killmeyer had three hits and an RBI to help Riverview (4-9, 3-7) earn a Section 3-2A win at Brentwood (7-8, 4-6). Vincent Shook earned the win, pitching 413 innings with four strikeouts, and Chris Collins allowed one hit and an unearned run in 223 innings of relief. Will Franciscus had two RBIs.

Softball

South Fayette 5, Trinity 0 — Madison Potteiger was 2 for 3 with four RBIs as South Fayette (11-7, 8-4) won a Section 3-5A game.

Montour 11, Mars 1 (5 inn.) — Hannah Gallagher was 2 for 2 with three RBIs as Montour (8-7, 7-5) won in Section 3-5A.

South Allegheny 14, Brownsville 2 — Kennedy Pikula and Olivia Stetz each had three hits and four RBIs, and Sydney Kirkwood and Aliyah Rotharmel were 3 for 3 as Class 3A No. 3 South Allegheny (16-2, 10-2) won a Section 3 game.

Vincentian Academy 15, Northgate 0 (5 inn.) — Winning pitcher Elizabeth Arnold and Amelia Johnson each were 3 for 5 to help Class 2A No. 1 Vincentian Academy (13-1, 12-0) earn a Section 2 win.

Hopewell 6, Riverside 4 — Melina Bufalini singled in the game-winning run with the bases-loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning as Hopewell (5-10) won a nonsection game.

West Greene 10, Waynesburg 4 — Madison Lampe and Kaitlyn Rizor each hit two-run home runs and were 3 for 4 as Class A No. 1 West Greene (15-4) won a nonsection game.

For a third straight season, the Trojans are headed to the playoffs.

Kam Kelly hit a three-run home run to help Derry defeat East Allegheny, 15-5, a Section 1-3A softball game Tuesday afternoon.

Winning pitcher Gianna Copelli was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs. In the circle, she had seven strikeouts and scattered eight hits.

Alanna Meloy, Allison Baum and Sarah Aukerman had two hits each for the Trojans (4-10, 4-6), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

The playoff pairings will be announced at noon Thursday on the TribLive High School Sports Network.

Elizabeth Forward 2, Penn-Trafford 1 — Taylor Ludwick singled home two runs in the sixth inning to give Class 4A No. 3 Elizabeth Forward (14-3) a nonsection victory. Kailey Larcinese threw a four-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Emma Armstrong had two hits for Class 5A No. 1 Penn-Trafford (16-1), which suffered its first loss of the season.

Mt. Pleasant 3, Belle Vernon 1 — Haylie Brunson hit a two-run home run, and Katie Hutter knocked in a run as part of a three-run first inning that lifted Class 4A No. 1 Mt. Pleasant (15-0) to a nonsection win. Carolyn Alincic threw a four-hitter with 14 strikeouts.

Natalie French had two hits, and Jordan French had an RBI for Belle Vernon (7-13).

Southmoreland 14, Monessen 5 — Abby Fullem had two doubles, and Faith Miller and Emily Eutsey had two hits each as Southmoreland (9-6) won a nonsection game. Hannah Yorty had a homer and two singles, and Mattie Telegraphis added three hits for the Greyhounds (5-9).

Burrell 4, Highlands 1 — Lea Coffman hit a solo homer in the fourth inning to help propel the Class 3A No. 2 Bucs to a nonsection victory. Kylie Karns earned the victory for Burrell (13-2), striking out five in 523 innings. Sarah Sawhook singled twice for Highlands (5-9).

Deer Lakes 3, Fox Chapel 2 — Sarah Danner singled in two runs in the second inning that helped Deer Lakes (9-8) earn an nonsection victory at Fox Chapel (3-14). Marleen Meyer pitched a complete game for the Lancers. Lydia Guthrie doubled and Reese Hasley singled twice and drove in a run with a squeeze bunt in the fourth inning.

Riverview 18, Sto-Rox 0 (3 inn.) — The Raiders scored 12 runs in the first inning, cruising to a Section 2-2A victory. Katelyn Davis pitched a no-hitter, Kelsey Phillips drove in four runs and Lizzy Lekovitch had two hits for Riverview (8-5, 7-5).

Leechburg 16, Geibel 0 (3 inn.) — Keira Jones went 3 for 3 with a double and a pair of RBIs, and Gracie Reinke had three RBIs for Class A No. 2 Leechburg (14-1, 12-0) in a Section 3-A win at Geibel (0-12, 0-11). Emma Ritchie struck out five and did not allow a hit in three innings. Olivia Shimer drove in two runs.

Apollo-Ridge 15, Shady Side Academy 1 (5 inn.) — Kylee Wynn went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs for Apollo-Ridge (9-4, 8-4) in a Section 2-2A win over Shady Side Academy (3-9, 3-9). Morgan Shupe and Mollie Charlton had two RBIs each.

St. Joseph 11, Ellis School 3 — Molly Coleman and Hannah Kipp had three hits apiece to lead St. Joseph (5-7, 5-7) to a Section 3-A win over Ellis School (2-10, 2-10). Coleman, Ava Swanson and Shelby Gogal doubled for the Spartans. Gogal struck out seven in a complete game to earn the win.
