High school roundup for May 20, 2025: Pine-Richland pulls off another 1-run win to reach finals

Anthony Annichine delivered the go-ahead RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead top-seeded Pine-Richland to a 5-4 victory over No. 4 Bethel Park in the WPIAL Class 5A baseball semifinals Tuesday. It was the third straight one-run playoff win for the Rams.

Jake Waddell singled, doubled and drove in three runs, Sam Heckert had a double and an RBI and winning pitcher Keegan Deihl went the distance, allowing three hits, for Pine-Richland (20-3), which will meet No. 3 Shaler in the championship game. Mike Bruckner and Ryan Petras each singled and drove in a run for the Black Hawks (18-5).

Carmichaels 6, Leechburg 3 – Robbie Wilson-Jones had two hits and two runs scored and Brayden Andrews drove in a pair of runs as No. 6 Carmichaels (14-4) scored four runs in the first to take control of a Class A quarterfinal. Cooper Richards singled and drove in a run, Jase Zdravecky went 6⅔ innings to pick up the win and Wilson-Jones got the final out for the Mighty Mikes, who will face No. 2 Eden Christian in the semifinals Wednesday. Chase Henry had two hits and two runs scored and Jake Cummings had two hits and two RBIs for No. 3 Leechburg (14-4).

Eden Christian 6, Avella 0 – Noah Emswiler threw a complete-game two-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead No. 2 Eden Christian (15-4) to a Class A quarterfinal win. Jacob Janicki tripled and drove in two runs, Brady Hull had a triple and an RBI and Levi DeFazio singled and knocked in a run for the Warriors, who will face No. 6 Carmichaels in the semifinals Wednesday. Logan Fedak and Tristan Davis had hits for No. 10 Avella (11-8).

Elizabeth Forward 4, Central Valley 1 – Mitchell Vuick hit a two-run homer and JB Crovak threw a complete-game four-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead 3 Elizabeth Forward (16-3) in the Class 4A semifinals. Cy Herchelroath singled, doubled and drove in a run and AJ Grese had a single and an RBI for the Warriors, who will take on No. 1 Indiana in the finals. Cameron Miller singled and drove in a run for No. 7 Central Valley (12-11).

Freedom 3, Neshannock 0 – Boden Hilliard threw a four-hit shutout to lead No. 8 Freedom (13-7) to a Class 2A quarterfinal upset of top-seeded Neshannock (16-5). Anthony Taddeo tripled and drove in a run, Mason O’Donnell doubled and knocked in a run and Nick Fessler had a single and an RBI for the Bulldogs, who will meet No. 12 Laurel in Wednesday’s semifinals. Jake Rynd went 3 for 3 with two doubles and Ryan Cameron also doubled for the Lancers (16-5).

Indiana 11, Belle Vernon 2 – Tim Birch went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and four pitchers combined on a one-hitter for top-seeded Indiana (21-1) in the Class 4A semifinals. Sullivan VanHoose and Ryan Okopal each gave up a run in two innings pitched. Brady Oakes threw two scoreless innings and Mark Collinger worked a no-hit seventh for Indiana, which will meet No. 3 Elizabeth Forward in the finals. Carter Putt had three hits and two RBIs and Rocco Cosentino drove in three runs for Indiana. Connor Bergman singled and drove in a run for No. 5 Belle Vernon (15-6).

Laurel 6, Shenango 0 – Luca Santini threw six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out nine, and helped his own cause with a single and two RBIs as No. 12 Laurel (10-10) continued its playoff run in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Kolton Carlson singled, doubled and scored two runs and Tyler Shearer had a hit and two RBIs for the Spartans, who will take on No. 8 Freedom in the semifinals Wednesday. Trey Ross singled and tripled for No. 4 Shenango (15-6).

Mohawk 3, Ellwood City 1 – Bobby Fadden and Briar Crawford combined on a two-hitter, Vinny Pezzuolo homered and Kam O’Lare hit a two-run single to lead No. 11 Mohawk (12-9) to a Class 3A quarterfinal upset. Fadden allowed one unearned run and one hit in three innings. Crawford gave up one hit and struck out four in four scoreless innings for the Warriors, who will meet No. 7 Quaker Valley in Wednesday’s semifinals. Cameron Mills tripled and Nathan Kennedy drove in a run for No. 3 Ellwood City (15-6).

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 8, New Brighton 0 – Iseia Schultz threw a complete-game three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and helped his own cause with a single and an RBI to lead No. 2 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (14-7) to a Class 2A quarterfinal win. Dean Douglass went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, Gino Williams had two hits and two runs scored and Anthony Hansen doubled and scored for the Chargers, who will meet No. 6 Riverview in the semifinals Wednesday. Jaxson Zahn, Carter Jackson and Noah Conley had singles for No. 10 New Brighton (10-9).

Seneca Valley 4, Canon-McMillan 0 – Andrew Malichky threw a five-hit shutout with two walks and nine strikeouts to send No. 3 Seneca Valley (16-6) into the Class 6A championship game against No. 4 Norwin. Micah Olayer homered, Owen Voelp singled and drove in two runs and Ryan Piekutoski doubled for the Raiders. Collin Yeager singled and doubled for No. 2 Canon-McMillan (15-7).

Serra Catholic 11, Jefferson-Morgan 1 – Owen Dumbroski threw four scoreless innings, singled, doubled and drove in a run to power top-seeded Serra Catholic (17-3) to a Class A quarterfinal win in six innings. Matt McNeal went 3 for 3 with two RBIs, Chris Johnson went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and Jake Holmes drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles, who will meet No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic in the semifinals Wednesday. Deakyn Dehoet doubled and drove in a run and Evan Kniha tripled for No. 8 Jefferson-Morgan (14-4).

Shaler 2, Peters Township 1 – Dante Deleonibus struck out eight in a complete-game win and Troy Leas singled, doubled and drove in a run to lead No. 3 Shaler (16-6) in the Class 5A semifinals. Kaleb Jockel singled and drove in a run and Colby McGuire singled, doubled and scored a run for the Titans, who will face No. 1 Pine-Richland in the finals. Colin Stofik singled, doubled and drove in a run and hard-luck losing pitcher Zachary Miner gave up six hits in six innings with five strikeouts for No. 7 Peters Township (15-8).

South Park 11, Waynesburg 1 – Ryan Spitznagel singled and homered, Troy Miller singled, doubled and knocked in two runs and Bryce Berzansky went 2 for 2 with three RBIs as No. 5 South Park (14-6) rolled to a Class 3A quarterfinal win in five innings. Cooper Hochendoner pitched four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out four, for the Eagles, who will meet No. 1 Riverside in the semifinals Wednesday. Grant Pack singled and drove in a run for No. 4 Waynesburg (16-4).

Softball

Blackhawk 3, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Kylie Prisuta threw a four-hit shutout, doubled and drove in a run as No. 5 Blackhawk (13-6) knocked off defending champion and top seed Elizabeth Forward (15-4). Brynn Hyson went 3 for 3 with a run scored, Zoey Lindner had two hits and an RBI, Keira Rodu singled and drove in a run and Mia Yenges doubled for the Cougars, who will take on No. 2 Hampton in the finals. Julia Resnik, Aubri Cimba, Sophie Pasinsky and Hannah Evans singled for the Warriors.

Hampton 4, Beaver 0 – Marissa Snyder had a huge day in the Class 4A semifinals, throwing a four-hit shutout with five strikeouts and going 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs to lead No. 2 Hampton (16-5) past No. 6 Beaver (15-6). Alena Zottola went 3 for 4 with a double and Aliza Michielli and Aidan Hanna each singled and scored for the Talbots, who will meet No. 5 Blackhawk in the finals. Bridget Mayo, Sami Springman, Olivia Peabody and Rhiannon Rabassi singled for the Bobcats.

Hempfield 8, Canon-McMillan 2 – Lauren Howard went 4 for 4 with a double, triple and three RBIs and Allie Cervola and Claire Mitchell homered as top-seeded Hempfield beat No. 4 Canon-McMillan in the Class 6A semifinals. Mitchell went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI and Cervola went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Riley Miller allowed two unearned runs on five hits in a complete game for the Spartans, who will meet No. 2 Seneca Valley for the third time this season in the WPIAL championship game. The teams split two regular season meetings.

Shaler 4, West Allegheny 0 – After throwing no-hitters in her first two playoff starts, Bria Bosiljevac threw a complete-game two-hitter with no walks and 15 strikeouts to lead No. 2 Shaler (17-4) in the Class 5A semifinals. Addy Aleski, Emily Spears and Haley Machajewski each had a single and an RBI for the Titans, who will meet No. 1 Penn-Trafford in the finals. Ava Henke had both hits for No. 3 West Allegheny (16-5).

Boys volleyball

North Allegheny 3, Pine-Richland 0 – Brendan Moore and Matthew LaMay each had eight kills, Emmette Morris had nine digs and Jackson Failla and Elliott Swierczynski each handed out 13 assists as top-seeded North Allegheny (14-1) swept No. 5 Pine-Richland (11-6) in the Class 3A semifinals. The Tigers will meet No. 2 Seneca Valley, a 3-2 winner over No. 6 Penn-Trafford, in the finals.

In the Class 2A semifinals, top-seeded Shaler (15-1) swept No. 5 South Fayette (15-5) and No. 2 ambridge (15-1) got past No. 6 Mars (10-11) in five games.
