High school roundup for May 2, 2019: New Brighton upsets No. 2 Hopewell

Jeramie Hill doubled in three runs, and Jake Francona was 3 for 4 with an RBI as New Brighton upset No. 2-ranked Hopewell, 7-5, in a Section 2-3A baseball game Thursday afternoon.

It was the seventh straight victory for New Brighton (11-4, 8-2), which is in second place in Section 2, a half-game behind Hopewell.

Jake McGovern hit a grand slam for No. 2 Hopewell (11-5, 9-2), which snapped a three-game winning streak.

Pine-Richland 10, Butler 2 — Matt Wood homered and had two RBIs, and JD Armstrong knocked in three runs as No. 2 Pine-Richland (13-3, 8-0) won a Section 1-6A game.

Hampton 10, Moon 5 — Casey Marshalwitz was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Adam Straud had three hits and two RBIs as No. 3 Hampton (10-6, 7-2) won in Section 2-5A.

West Allegheny 5, Trinity 1 — Logan Scheider had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs to help No. 1 West Allegheny (14-2, 11-0) win in Section 3-5A.

Beaver 8, Quaker Valley 4 — Brady Hanson doubled in three runs as Beaver (8-6, 7-2) won in Section 2-4A.

Keystone Oaks 6, Charleroi 2 — Winning pitcher Mason Brooks and Colby Rockacy each were 3 for 3, and Mark Wetmiller had two RBIs as No. 3 Keystone Oaks (12-2, 10-1) won in Section 3-3A. Brooks threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Carmichaels 10, Burgettstown 3 — Dylan Wilson was 3 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs, and Stush Ferek knocked in three runs as Carmichaels (12-1, 8-1) won a Section 1-2A game.

Serra Catholic 11, Riverview 0 (5 inn.) — Logan Exler threw a two-hitter and Mark Black and Nico Eremic homered as No. 2 Serra Catholic (15-2, 8-1) won in Section 3-2A. Patrick Brennan and Alex Glumac each had three RBIs. Chris Collins took the loss for Riverview (2-9, 1-7).

OLSH 6, Carlynton 5 — Jeff Zick had two doubles, and Jake Kocent had three hits to help No. 3 OLSH (13-2, 8-1) win a Section 4-2A game.

Penn-Trafford 6, Latrobe 1 — Bobby Lane doubled in two runs, and Anthony Sherwin, Mario Disso and Jordan Sabol also had RBIs as No. 1 Penn-Trafford (14-2, 7-2) won in Section 1-5A. Tyler Horvat allowed one hit and had three strikeouts in 5²⁄₃ innings to earn the win.

Noah Belak had an RBI for Latrobe (7-9, 2-6).

Greensburg Salem 18, Indiana 4 (6 inn.) — Jack Oberdorf was 2 for 4 with a home run and six RBIs to lead Greensburg Salem (12-2, 8-2) to a Section 1-4A win. Matt Wicker had three doubles and two RBIs, and Brayden Merichko knocked in three runs.

Mt. Pleasant 3, Knoch 2 — Reliever Regis Sofranko stuck out back-to-back batters with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to earn a save and preserve a Section 1 victory at Class 4A No. 4 Knoch (9-5, 5-5). Joe Shrum went 3 for 4 with an RBI for the Vikings.

Belle Vernon 9, McKeesport 1 — Josh Hoffman was 3 for 5 with two RBIs, and Max Gauden was 4 for 4 as Belle Vernon (9-5, 8-4) won in Section 2-4A. Mason Pascoe had two hits and two RBIs.

Kiski Area 10, Penn Hills 0 (5 inn.) — Ryne Wallace went 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and three runs to lead a balanced hitting effort for Kiski Area (8-8, 5-5) in a Section 1-5A victory over Penn Hills (2-11, 2-8). Billy Perroz doubled and tripled for the Cavaliers. Zach Morrill singled twice and drove in two runs, and Nick Smith had a double and a pair of RBIs.

Freeport 3, South Allegheny 1 — Joseph Hotalski pitched five innings, allowing one run, and had an RBI single to help Class 4A No. 4 Freeport (10-5, 7-2) earn a Section 1-3A victory over South Allegheny (2-12, 1-9). Jarrett Heilman pitched the final two innings and struck out four to earn a save.

St. Joseph 17, Springdale 7 (5 inn.) — Dom Fellowes pitched three innings with seven strikeouts and went 3 for 4 with an RBI to lead St. Joseph (5-6, 3-4) to a Section 3-A win over Springdale (2-11, 1-7). Tyler Wood singled three times and had a pair of RBIs, and Will Mason drove in three runs.

Gateway 1, Norwin 0 — Clayton Shelander threw a five-hitter and also doubled but gave up an unearned run as Norwin (10-5) lost to Class 5A No. 4 Gateway (12-4) in a nonsection game.

Derry 11, Southmoreland 4 — Brayden Mickinac was 3 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs to help Derry (5-8) win a nonsection game. Ryan Bushey knocked in three runs, and Josh Ulery had two RBIs in the win.

Ben Zimmerman was 2 for 4 to lead Southmoreland (2-11).

Saltsburg 8, Ligonier Valley 6 — Sam Sheeder had two RBIs but Ligonier Valley (11-1, 9-1) suffered its first loss of the season in the District 6 Heritage Conference.

Softball

Albert Gallatin 13, Armstrong 0 (5 inn.) — Maddy Hershberger hit a three-run home run, and Annalia Paoli was 2 for 2 with three RBIs as Albert Gallatin (7-7, 7-6) won in Section 1-5A.

Hampton 4, Mars 2 — Sydney Kasper doubled in a run as No. 2 Hampton (14-1, 13-1) won a Section 2-5A game. Bella Henzler was 3 for 4 for the Talbots. Anneliese Probeck had 10 strikeouts in the win.

Moon 15, Montour 3 (5 inn.) — Olivia Logan was 4 for 4 with a triple, two home runs and seven RBIs as Moon (5-9, 5-6) won in Section 3-5A.

Vincentian Academy 12, Shady Side Academy 2 (5 inn.) — Winning pitcher Elizabeth Arnold was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs to help No. 1 Vincentian Academy (12-0, 11-0) to a Section 2-2A win.

Greensburg Salem 10, Indiana 7 — Carissa Caldwell had two hits and three RBIs, and Sydney Tressler homered and had two RBIs to help Greensburg Salem (6-9, 4-6) win a Section 1-4A game. Kasey Storkel had two doubles and an RBI in the win. Madison Barker had three hits, including a homer, and three RBIs for Indiana (10-6, 5-5).

Yough 9, Uniontown 0 — Kierra Waywood threw a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead No. 2 Yough (11-5, 8-2) to a Section 1-4A victory. Savannah Manns was 3 for 4 with a double, and Waywood, Katelyn Chilzer and Hadley Sleith all knocked in runs for the Cougars.

Elizabeth Forward 5, Belle Vernon 3 — Grace Smith had two hits and two RBIs to help No. 4 Elizabeth Forward (13-3, 12-0) win a Section 2-4A game. Kailey Larcinese struck out 10 in the victory. Lindsay Steeber doubled, homered and had two RBIs for Belle Vernon (6-12, 4-7). Natalie French had two hits for the Leopards.

Norwin 13, Butler 0 — Alexandra Dillner homered, and Hailee Culbertson was 3 for 3 with a double, as No. 4 Norwin (10-5, 9-4) won in Section 2-6A. Victoria Shimko had two doubles for the Knights.

South Allegheny 7, Southmoreland 3 — Kalsey Denk homered to help No. 5 South Allegheny (14-2, 8-2) earn a Section 3-3A victory.

Faith Miller was 3 for 4, and losing pitcher Lexi Klatt homered for No. 4 Southmoreland (8-5, 7-5).

Monessen 9, Avella 0 — Kendelle Weston and Mattie Telegraphis each had two RBIs, and Hannah Yorty threw a two-hitter with nine strikeouts as Monessen (5-8, 5-5) won in Section 2-A.

Knoch 9, Quaker Valley 1 — Amanda Fischer doubled and drove in three runs for the Class 4A No. 3 Knights, who completed an undefeated Section 3 season.

The Knights (14-1, 10-0) won eight of their section games by more than five runs, with six shutouts.

Monica Gourley singled three times and scored twice for the Knights. Bailey Rickenbrode and Lily Hawk doubled, and Olivia Vissari drove in two runs.

Burrell 18, Valley 1 (4 inn.) — Lea Coffman homered twice and drove in five runs for Class 3A No. 2 Burrell (11-2, 9-1), which clinched an outright Section 1 title with a win at Valley (3-10, 2-8). Charlie Confer hit a two-run homer for the Bucs. Kayla Santucci and Rikki Wyble had three hits apiece. Cara Fiore and Maia Ferra had two singles each. Eden Richey doubled for Valley, and Mackenzie Booker had an RBI single.

Plum 8, Gateway 0 — A day after knocking off previously unbeaten Hampton, Class 5A No. 5 Plum secured at least a share of the Section 2 title with a win over Gateway. Chole Fabio, Mackenzie Lake, Gabby Fischetti, Alyssa Schofield and Melanie Mienke each doubled for the Mustangs. Fischetti had three RBIs. Fabio scored three runs.

Springdale 8, Ellis School 5; Springdale 9, Ellis School 8 — Class A No. 3 Springdale (9-2, 6-2) survived a late rally in game one and won in walk-off fashion in game two to earn a Section 3 sweep of Ellis School (1-9, 1-9) and clinch its first WPIAL playoff berth since 2000.

In game one, Brianna Thompson had three hits, including two doubles, to hold off Ellis School, which scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Alexis Hrivnak had an RBI double and pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts. In game two, Emily Wilhelm hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh that scored Elizabeth Puskar, capping off a Dynamos rally.

Leechburg 12, St. Joseph 0; Leechburg 12, St. Joseph 1 — The No. 2 Blue Devils clinched their third straight Section 3-A championship with a doubleheader sweep of the Spartans (4-6, 4-6). In Game 1, Emma Ritchie collected three RBIs and recorded the pitching win. McKenna Pierce homered and drove in two runs to lead Leechburg (13-1, 11-0) in Game 2, while Ritchie knocked in three runs and picked up the victory in the circle.

Freeport 16, East Allegheny 0 (4 inn.) — Ally DeJidas pitched four no-hit innings with seven strikeouts, doubled, and hit a solo homer for Freeport (10-2, 8-2) in a Section 1-3A win over East Allegheny (0-10, 0-9). DeJidas allowed one base runner on a hit by pitch. Emily Schmidt had three hits, including two doubles. Jenna Selker, Madison Shanta and Natalie King had one double each.

Beaver 14, Freedom 2 — Lexi Dawson hit two home runs and had five RBIs for Beaver (10-4) in a nonsection win.
