High school roundup for May 19, 2025: Hempfield baseball knocks off No. 1 North Allegheny

Josh Cayer went the distance, allowing one run on two hits with eight strikeouts, as No. 8 Hempfield stunned top-seeded North Allegheny, 3-1, in the WPIAL Class 6A baseball quarterfinals Monday at Boyce Mayview Park.
Drew Jones had two hits and Owen Shuglie drove in two runs as the Spartans (8-13) took advantage of four North Allegheny errors to score once in the second and twice in the fifth. Hempfield will meet No. 4 Norwin in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Boyce Mayview Park. Christian Simons doubled and drove in a run for the Tigers (14-7).
Canon-McMillan 3, North Hills 0 – Winning pitcher Sebastian Shulsky struck out nine and allowed three hits in 6⅔ innings to lead No. 2 Canon-McMillan (15-6) in a Class 6A quarterfinal win. Teddy Burke had two hits and MJ Maruschak got the final out for the Big Macs, who will meet No. 3 Seneca Valley in the semifinals Tuesday. Gabriel Negri went 2 for 3 for No. 7 North Hills (7-13), which made three errors in Canon-McMillan’s three-run first inning.
Central Valley 3, West Mifflin 2 – Blake Heater hit the tie-breaking RBI single in the top of the 11th to lead No. 7 Central Valley (12-10) past No. 2 West Mifflin (15-6) in the Class 4A quarterfinals. Will Ciucci pitched 4 ⅓ innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits and striking out eight, to earn the win. Jacob Hunter singled and drove in a run and Nathan Angelo had three hits and two runs scored for the Warriors, who will meet No. 3 Elizabeth Forward in the semifinals Tuesday. Jayvon Thompson singled and doubled and Cody Thornton drove in a run for the Titans.
West Mifflin celebrated an apparent victory in the bottom of the eighth when umpires called a balk on an unsuccessful attempt at a steal of home by Thompson. After a conference, umpires reversed the decision and the game continued.
Elizabeth Forward 8, Ringgold 5 – Cy Herchelroath went 3 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs, Charlie Nigut hit two doubles and drove in a run and Joseph Crovak had two hits and an RBI to lead No. 3 Elizabeth Forward (15-3) to a Class 4A quarterfinal win. Tyler Fisher doubled and drove in two runs, Demetri Lowe had a single, double and an RBI and Paul Dzyak doubled and drove in a run for No. 11 Ringgold (11-11). Elizabeth Forward will face No. 7 Central Valley in the semifinals Tuesday.
Indiana 1, Ambridge 0 – Two pitchers combined on a nine-inning one-hit shutout and Sullivan VanHoose delivered a walk-off RBI single as No. 1 Indiana (20-1) got past No. 9 Ambridge (9-11) in the Class 4A quarterfinals. Greg Minnick threw 7⅔ scoreless innings, giving up one single and striking out 17. Ryan Okopal finished it off with 1⅓ no-hit innings to earn the win. Joe Leseiko threw eight scoreless innings for the Bridgers, allowing four hits and striking out nine. Adam Fernandez had the lone hit for Ambridge leading off the first inning. Ethan Shank had two hits for Indiana, which will meet No. 5 Belle Vernon in the semifinals Tuesday.
Peters Township 7, Mars 6 – Jackson Stocker hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th for No. 7 Peters Township (15-7) in a Class 5A quarterfinal win. Nathan Skroupa tripled and drove in two runs and Michael Alspaugh singled and doubled for the Indians, who will meet No. 3 Shaler in the semifinals Tuesday. Zachary Rozman hit two singles and Aiden Kuremsky drove in two runs for No. 15 Mars (9-11).
Seneca Valley 4, Mt. Lebanon 3 – Mason Fisher hit the tie-breaking RBI single in the bottom of the sixth for No. 3 Seneca Valley (15-6) in a Class 6A quarterfinal win. Danny Drennan went 2 for 3 with a double and RBI for the Raiders, who will face No. 2 Canon McMillan in the semifinals Tuesday. Ben Kraemer went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs for No. 6 Mt. Lebanon (8-13).
Shaler 6, Connellsville 1 – Colby Weber struck out 14 and allowed three hits for No. 3 Shaler (15-6) in a Class 5A quarterfinal win. Landon Schiffhauer went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Titans, who will meet No. 7 Peters Township in the semifinals Tuesday. Grayden Gillott and Noah Zawisian tripled for No. 11 Connellsville (14-6).
Softball
Avonworth 7, Keystone Oaks 1 – Alexandra Eberhardt went 2 for 2 with a double, home run and four RBIs and Reese Long and Sydney Savatt also homered to lead No. 4 Avonworth (15-4) to a Class 3A quarterfinal win. Winning pitcher Ali Linhart gave up five hits and struck out four in a complete game for the Antelopes, who will meet No. 1 South Park in the semifinals Wednesday. Nina Buckley went 2 for 3 with an RBI for No. 12 Keystone Oaks (9-9).
Bentworth 3, Shenango 1 – Sydney Gonglik struck out 11 and allowed three hits for No. 12 Bentworth (10-9) in a Class 2A quarterfinal win. Gonglik doubled and drove in a run and Zoie McDonald drove in two runs for the Bearcats, who will meet No. 1 Neshannock in the semifinals Wednesday. Emma Herb hit a home run for No. 13 Shenango (12-9).
Carmichaels 9, Serra Catholic 0 – Bailey Barnyak threw a three-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts to lead No. 2 Carmichaels (15-0) to a Class A quarterfinal win. Kaitlyn Waggett hit a triple and Ashton Batis drove in two runs for the Mighty Mikes, who will face No. 3 West Greene in the semifinals Wednesday. Giana Foster singled and walked for No. 7 Serra Catholic (13-6).
Chartiers-Houston 6, Seton LaSalle 1 – Ella Richey went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs and Seanna Riggle had a double and two RBIs to lead No. 2 Chartiers-Houston (19-2) to a Class 2A quarterfinal win. Meadow Ferri struck out 12 and allowed three hits for the Buccaneers, who will meet No. 11 Riverside in the semifinals Wednesday. Gianna Ferrieri hit a triple and Kamiya Morris drove in a run for No. 7 Seton LaSalle (11-6).
Ellwood City 8, McGuffey 0 – Amber McQuinston threw a two-hitter and struck out seven to lead No. 3 Ellwood City (11-8) to a Class 3A quarterfinal win. Lena Lucarelli went 3 for 4 with a double, triple and four RBIs and Riley Prestopine and Sara Schwarz each singled and doubled for the Wolverines, who will meet No. 2 Mohawk in the semifinals Wednesday. Miley Main hit a double for No. 6 McGuffey (11-6).
Jefferson-Morgan 5, Sewickley Academy 0 – Emilee Bazzoli threw a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts to lead No. 5 Jefferson-Morgan (10-6) to a Class A quarterfinal win. Ashlynn Snyder singled, tripled and drove in a run, Bazzoli homered and Karlee Crockard doubled for the Rockets, who will face No. 1 Union in the semifinals Wednesday. Marie Bigi went 2 for 3 for No. 4 Sewickley Academy (11-6).
Neshannock 14, Apollo-Ridge 2 – Winning pitcher Addy Frye struck out 14 in a five-inning game, doubled twice and drove in two runs to lead top-seeded Neshannock (20-0) to a Class 2A quarterfinal win. Jaidon Nogay doubled, tripled and knocked in two runs and Miley Anderson tripled twice and had three RBIs for the Lancers, who will meet No. 12 Bentworth in the semifinals Wednesday. Mikaila Ditty hit a two-run homer to give No. 8 Apollo-Ridge (14-5) an early lead in the top of the first. Jocelyn Snyder and Madison Butler doubled for the Vikings.
Riverside 11, Laurel 1 – Ava Cummings went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, Danny Rosenberger singled and doubled, Charlie Bissell had three hits and Saeryn Hoover had two hits and an RBI for No. 11 Riverside (9-9) in a Class 2A quarterfinal win. Winning pitcher Jocilene Cummings allowed one unearned run in a complete game for the Panthers, who will face No. 2 Chartiers-Houston in the semifinals Wednesday. Mayci Lang went 3 for 4 and Riley Balcolm drove in a run for No. 3 Laurel (15-5).
Union 10, Jeannette 0 – Winning pitcher Mia Preuhs threw a five-inning no-hitter and struck out 14 to lead No. 1 Union (17-2) to a Class A quarterfinal win over No. 8 Jeannette (14-5). Olivia Williams had a triple, home run and two RBIs, Olivia Benedict had a double and three RBIs and Irelyn Fisher homered for the Scotties, who will meet No. 5 Jefferson-Morgan in the semifinals Wednesday.
West Greene 7, South Side – Payton Gilbert drove in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh and the winning run in the bottom of the eighth for No. 3 West Greene (15-3) in a Class A quarterfinal win. In the seventh, Marissa Tharp led off with a single and Gilbert followed with an RBI double. In the eighth, Katie Brudnock led off with a double and Gilbert drove her in with a walk-off RBI single. Maya Ringhoff went 4 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs and Karis Dunham doubled and drove in a run for No. 6 South Side (11-8). Emmaline Beazell had a double and four RBIs for the Pioneers, who will meet No. 2 Carmichaels in the semifinals Wednesday.
Boys lacrosse
South Fayette 12, Peters Township 5 – Drew Welhorsky had a goal and six assists, Ryan Mey collected two goals and two assists and Pierce Hondru added a goal and an assist and went 19 for 19 on faceoffs as No. 1 South Fayette (19-0) stayed undefeated with a Class 2A semifinal win over No. 4 Peters Township (11-7).
In the other Class 2A semifinal, No. 2 Mars downed No. 3 Hampton, 13-6.
In the Class 3A semifinals, No. 1 Mt. Lebanon took care of No. 4 North Allegheny, 9-4, and No. 2 Shady Side Academy defeated No. 3 Upper St. Clair, 13-8.
Girls lacrosse
Mt. Lebanon 12, Upper St. Clair 9 – Quinn Murdoch scored six goals and Lauren Tinnemeyer added three to lead No. 3 Mt. Lebanon (14-3) in the Class 3A semifinals. Lucy Pryor added two goals and Grace Manning also scored for the Blue Devils, who will meet No. 1 Pine-Richland in the finals. Anna Capobres scored five goals and Riley Powell had a pair for No. 2 Upper St. Clair (17-2).
Pine-Richland 16, Moon 6 – Mallory Boivin had eight goals and two assists to power top-seeded Pine-Richland (18-2) to a Class 3A semifinal win. Cate Gentile collected three goals and three assists, Mada Mill added two goals and two assists and Claire Mill also scored twice for the Rams.
In the Class 2A semifinals Monday, No. 1 Mars defeated No. 4 Blackhawk, 13-8, and No. 3 Chartiers Valley got past No. 7 Quaker Valley, 10-8. Lucy Roig scored three goals and Alexa Westwood added two for the Quakers.
The boys and girls championship games are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at Upper St. Clair with times and dates to be announced.
