Cooper Hochendoner threw a complete-game three-hitter with 16 strikeouts to lead No. 5 South Park to a 4-2 victory over No. 12 Mt. Pleasant in a WPIAL Class 3A baseball first-round game Thursday night.
Hochendoner had an immaculate inning in the second, striking out the side on nine pitches. Sonny Marne had a two-run single to give the Vikings (12-7) an early 2-0 lead. The Eagles (13-6) will meet No. 4 Waynesburg in the quarterfinals Monday.
Avella 5, Western Beaver 0 – Bryce Wright threw a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts to lead No. 10 Avella (11-7) in a Class A first-round win over No. 7 Western Beaver (14-5). Bryce Wright, Logan Fedak, Noah Kimberland and Jorden Moore had a single and RBI apiece for the Eagles, who will meet No. 2 Eden Christian in the quarterfinals Monday.
Avonworth 1, Keystone Oaks 0 – Cooper Scharding threw a one-hitter and struck out 10 for No. 2 Avonworth (18-3) in a Class 3A first-round win. Bryce Altenbaugh hit a single for No. 18 Keystone Oaks (9-10). Scharding had a triple and an RBI and Case Latore and Patrick Bykowski singled for the Antelopes, who will meet No. 7 Quaker Valley in the quarterfinals Monday.
Bishop Canevin 5, Rochester 0 – Kole Olszewski struck out 10 and had a single, double and an RBI in a Class A opening-round win for No. 4 Bishop Canevin (11-6). Nate Astor doubled and had two RBIs, while Jackson Maddix tripled and drove in a run for the Crusaders. Keegan Currie singled and walked for Rochester (8-8). Bishop Canevin will meet No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic in the quarterfinals Monday.
Carmichaels 9, Union 1 – Robbie Wilson-Jones went 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs, Brayden Andrews went 3 for 4 and Jordan Davis drove in two runs to lead No. 6 Carmichaels (13-4) to a Class A first-round win. Swayzee Reighert hit a double for No. 11 Union (7-10). Colin Andrews gave up one unearned run on two hits and struck out eight for the Mighty Mikes, who will face No. 3 Leechburg in the quarterfinals Monday.
Connellsville 2, Penn-Trafford 1 – When the Class 5A first-round game between No. 6 Penn-Trafford and No. 11 Connellsville was suspended Wednesday due to bad weather, the Falcons led 2-1. That’s also how it finished Thursday. Noah Zawislan singled and drove in two runs Wednesday and Ethan Porreca threw five scoreless innings Thursday, allowing two hits and striking out six, to lead the Falcons (14-5), who will take on No. 3 Shaler in the quarterfinals Tuesday. Jason Malamisuro had two hits and an RBI and Johnny Lovre threw five scoreless innings, giving up three hits and striking out six, for the Warriors (14-7).
Ellwood City 9, Seton LaSalle 1 – Aaron Lake went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and Cameron Mills drove in two runs to lead No. 3 Ellwood City (15-5) to a Class 3A first-round win. Lake earned the win, giving up one hit with six strikeouts in five innings. Roman LoNero singled and drove in a run for No. 14 Seton LaSalle (10-7). Ellwood City will meet No. 11 Mohawk in the quarterfinals.
Freedom 14, Apollo-Ridge 2 – Mason O’Donnell went 2 for 2 with a home run and five RBIs, Zach Kuntz had a double, triple and four RBIs and Tommy Ward drove in two runs to lead No. 8 Freedom (12-7) to a Class 2A first-round win. Brayden McCracken and Alexander Clawson had a single and RBI apiece for No. 9 Apollo-Ridge (8-8). Freedom will face No. 1 Neshannock in the quarterfinals Monday.
Jefferson-Morgan 11, Winchester Thurston 4 – Joey Bair went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Brayden Ellsworth and John Woodward drove in two runs apiece to lead No. 8 Jefferson-Morgan (14-3) to a Class A first-round win. Mason Witten and Sam Tarr doubled for No. 9 Winchester Thurston (11-7). Jefferson-Morgan will face No. 1 Serra Catholic in the quarterfinals Monday.
Laurel 4, Fort Cherry 3 – Luca Santini struck out six and had a double in the top of the seventh that scored the game-winning run for No. 12 Laurel (9-10) in a Class 2A opening-round upset. Jacob McBride went 2 for 3 and plated a run while Jack Jones and Connor Mackrell each had an RBI for the Spartans. Ben Demascal (RBI) and Colton Temple each had a hit for No. 5 Fort Cherry (13-6). Laurel will meet No. 4 Shenango in the quarterfinals Monday.
Mohawk 6, Deer Lakes 3 – Jackson Chapman and Jackson Peters doubled and Bobby Fadden drove in a run as No. 11 Mohawk (11-9) took advantage of four errors in a Class 3A first-round win. The Warriors will meet No. 3 Ellwood City in the quarterfinals Monday. Ben Shurina went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI for No. 6 Deer Lakes (9-7). Noah Shurina doubled and Brady Plummer drove in a run.
New Brighton 3, South Side 0 – Vernon Krepps scattered seven hits over six shutout innings and Brock Budacki struck out the side in the seventh in a Class 2A opening-round win for New Brighton (10-8). Jaxson Zahn and Casey Bloom each plated a run for the Lions, who will meet No. 2 OLSH in the quarterfinals. Andrew Madeja went 2 for 3 and Cole McCoy doubled for No. 7 South Side (10-7-1).
Peters Township 5, Baldwin 4 – James Tygard homered to lead No. 7 Peters Township (14-7) to a Class 5A first-round win. Aiden Robinson hit two doubles for No. 10 Baldwin (9-8). Peters Township will meet No. 15 Mars in the quarterfinals.
Riverside 4, Shady Side Academy 3 – Logan Young bunted in the game-winning run for No. 1 Riverside (14-2) in a Class 3A first-round win. Charlie Wanless had a double and three RBIs and Cole Little doubled for No. 16 Shady Side Academy (8-14), which led 3-1 after four innings. John Bowser hit a triple and Christian Lucarelli and Logan Young doubled apiece for the Panthers, who will meet No. 8 Burrell in the quarterfinals Monday.
Riverview 6, California 2 – Eli DeVita belted a three-run homer and Johnny Bertucci struck out eight in a complete-game win for No. 6 Riverview (13-6) in the Class 2A first round. Miles Duncan doubled and drove in a run and Bertucci had two hits and an RBI for the Raiders, who will face No. 3 Burgettstown in the quarterfinals Monday. Ricky Lawson doubled and scored for No. 11 California (8-10).
Shenango 1, Chartiers-Houston 0 – Nate Deem scored the lone run on a groundout off the bat of Matt Fry in the second for No. 4 Shenango (15-5) in a Class 2A first-round win. Joey Campoli struck out 10 and allowed two hits for the Wildcats, who will meet No. 12 Laurel in the quarterfinals. Cale Bitz and Julius Livingston singled for No. 13 Chartiers-Houston (7-10).

Apollo-Ridge 9, OLSH 8 – Mikaila Ditty doubled, homered and drove in three runs as No. 8 Apollo-Ridge (14-4) scored seven runs in the third inning and held on for a Class 2A first-round win. Madison Butler doubled, tripled and drove in a run and Josalin McCauley had two hits and an RBI for the Vikings, who will meet No. 1 Neshannock in the quarterfinals Monday. Sydney Trippe had two hits and three RBIs and Camryn Hummel singled, tripled and drove in a run for No. 9 OLSH (9-7).
Bentworth 9, South Allegheny 1 – Sydney Gonglik and Kayla O’Dell homered and Alexis Barnhart doubled and drove in a run to lead No. 12 Bentworth (9-9) to a Class 2A first-round win. Cameran Colecchi hit a double for No. 5 South Allegheny (14-4). Gonglik struck out 15 and allowed three hits for the Bearcats, who will meet No. 13 Shenango in the quarterfinals Monday.
Blackhawk 6, West Mifflin 0 – Kylie Prisuta threw a one-hitter and struck out 10 for No. 5 Blackhawk (13-5) in a Class 4A quarterfinal win. Rylie Dobnak hit a single for No. 4 West Mifflin (14-7). Prisuta hit a double and triple and Mia Yenges doubled for the Cougars, who will face No. 1 Elizabeth Forward in the semifinals Tuesday.
Chartiers-Houston 15, Brentwood 0 – Meadow Ferri threw a three-inning no-hitter and struck out seven for No. 2 Chartiers-Houston (18-2) in a Class 2A first-round win over No. 15 Brentwood (6-9). Ella Richey went 3 for 3 with a triple, home run and five RBIs, Taryne Drilak went 3 for 3 with a double and triple and Lauren Rush went 3 for 3 with two RBIs for the Buccaneers, who will meet No. 7 Seton LaSalle in the quarterfinals Monday.
Hampton 9, Indiana 0 – Marissa Snyder threw a one-hitter and struck out 14 for No. 2 Hampton (15-5) in a Class 4A quarterfinal win. Anna Carnavale hit a single for No. 7 Indiana (10-12). Snyder and Aliza Michielli hit a triple apiece and Ashley Schick hit a home run for the Talbots, who will face No. 6 Beaver in the semifinals Tuesday.
Jeannette 13, Avella 3 – Leah DeFelice went 3 for 4 with a double and RBI, Abigail Shaw had a triple and three RBIs and Gianna Casino drove in two runs to lead No. 8 Jeannette (14-4) to a Class A first-round win. Avrey Rado had a single and two RBIs for No. 9 Avella (5-11). Grace Stein struck out 13 in six innings for the Jayhawks, who will meet No. 1 Union in the quarterfinals Monday.
Jefferson-Morgan 14, Greensburg Central Catholic 4 — Addyson Teagarden singled, doubled and drove in two runs for No. 5 Jefferson-Morgan (9-6) in a Class A first-round win. Julianna Saxion had a double and RBI for No. 12 Greensburg Central Catholic (6-7). Karlee Crockard had two hits and drove in three runs for the Rockets, who will meet No. 4 Sewickley Academy in the quarterfinals.
Keystone Oaks 2, Mt. Pleasant 0 — Kennadi Smith threw a four-hit shutout with four strikeouts in a Class 3A first-round win for No. 12 Keystone Oaks (10-9). Kylie Stahl, Nina Buckley and Paisley Steban had two hits each, and Amelia Walter drove in a run for the Golden Eagles, who will meet No. 4 Avonworth in the quarterfinals Monday. Dani Trainer, Ella Alekson, Talia Reho and Autumn Jerkovic-Kuzma had hits for No. 5 Mt. Pleasant (12-6).
Laurel 18, Northgate 1 – Hailey Fell went 3 for 3 with a double and four RBIs, Ivy Pancher had a grand slam and five RBIs and Hayden Seifert drove in three runs to lead No. 3 Laurel (15-4) to a Class 2A first-round win. Gracie Auth had a double and RBI for No. 14 Northgate (10-8). Maddie Evans and Mayci Lang had a double and RBI apiece for the Spartans, who will meet No. 11 Riverside in the quarterfinals Monday.
McGuffey 5, Ligonier Valley 1 – Courtney Bedillion went 2 for 3, homered and drove in two runs in a Class 3A first-round win for McGuffey (11-5). Winning pitcher McKenna Crothers struck out eight and Maura Janovich also had a home run and an RBI for the Highlanders. Marlee Miller went 2 for 3 for Ligonier Valley (5-10). McGuffey will play No. 3 Ellwood City in the quarterfinals Monday.
Neshannock 15, Burgettstown 0 – Addy Frye threw a three-inning perfect game with eight strikeouts to lead Neshannock (19-0, 12-0) to a Class 2A opening-round win over No. 16 Burgettstown (8-11). Miley Anderson tallied a single, double, two triples and five RBIs and Frye (1 for 2, three RBIs) and Gabby Quinn (1 for 2, RBI) both homered for the Lancers, who will will face No. 8 Apollo Ridge in the quarterfinals Monday.
Riverside 14, Waynesburg 4 – Saeryn Hoover singled twice and doubled and Danny Rosenberger and Adelaide Burry each had a single and double for No. 11 Riverside (8-9) in a Class 2A first-round win. Kolbi Rastoka hit a triple and Bria Stephenson had a double and three RBIs for No. 6 Waynesburg (11-9). Camryn Friello drove in three runs for the Panthers, who will meet No. 3 Laurel in the quarterfinals Monday.

Samantha Melius hit a single for No. 10 Cornell (7-8). Serra Catholic will meet No. 2 Carmichaels in the quarterfinals Monday.

Gianna Ferrieri hit two triples, Meadow Kennard doubled and Kamiya Morris drove in two runs for the Rebels, who will meet No. 2 Chartiers-Houston in the quarterfinals Monday. Alexa Pellick went 2 for 2 and hard-luck losing pitcher Ava Clark struck out 10 and hit a double for No. 10 Brownsville (11-6).
Sewickley Academy 15, Monessen 0 – Charlotte Andrews threw a four-inning one-hitter and struck out seven for No. 4 Sewickley Academy (11-5) in a Class A first-round win. Grace Clingenpeel hit a single for No. 13 Monessen (6-9). Quincy Sirko went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, Sanaa Grant hit a two-run homer and Marie Bigi doubled and drove in two runs for the Panthers, who will face No. 5 Jefferson-Morgan in the quarterfinals Monday.
Shenango 7, Frazier 2 – Emma Herb went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs to lead No. 13 Shenango (12-9, 7-5) to a Class 2A first-round win. Kennedi Lynn had two hits and an RBI, while Brianna Aluisa drove in a run for the Wildcats. Grace Vaughn led No. 4 Frazier (10-3, 7-1) with a single, homer and two RBIs. Shenango will meet No. 12 Bentworth in the quarterfinals Monday.
Southmoreland 10, Hopewell 9 – Trailing 9-5, No. 7 Southmoreland (10-7) scored five runs without making an out in the bottom of the 10th for a walk-off Class 3A first-round win. Taryn Hollis singled, the next three batters walked, Makayla Etling hit a game-tying two-run double and Riley Puckey delivered the winning RBI hit. Tallulah Showrank had two doubles and five RBIs and Aaana Covalt hit three singles for No. 10 Hopewell (11-8). Taylor Doppleheuer went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs for the Scotties, who will meet No. 2 Mohawk in the quarterfinals Monday.
South Side 9, Leechburg 8 – Kenidi Cook led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and Maya Ringhoff followed with a walk-off RBI double to lead No. 6 South Side (10-8) to a comeback win in the Class A first round. Ringhoff went 4 for 5 with two doubles and four RBIs and Madison Morrow went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for the Rams, who trailed 8-1 after two innings. South Side will face No. 3 West Greene in the quarterfinals Monday. Ava Ferretti went 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI, Emily Talarico was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Adalyn Zanotto tripled and drove in three runs for No. 11 Leechburg (8-9).
Girls lacrosse
Pine-Richland 15, Shady Side Academy 5 – Cate Gentile had seven goals and two assists and Claire Dosch made nine saves to lead top-seeded Pine-Richland (17-2) to a Class 3A quarterfinal win over No. 8 Shady Side Academy (7-9). Mallory Boivin collected four goals and two assists, Claire Mill scored three times and Mada Mill had a goal and three assists for the Rams, who will meet No. 4 Moon in the semifinals Monday.
In other Class 3A quarterfinals, Moon beat No. 12 Norwin, 13-7, No. 2 Upper St. Clair doubled up No. 7 Penn-Trafford, 14-7, and No. 3 Mt. Lebanon outscored No. 6 Peters Township, 17-14.
Boys lacrosse
South Fayette 17, Indiana 4 – Drew Welhorsky racked up six goals and two assists and Braydon Reighard added three goals and an assist to send top-seeded South Fayette (18-0) past No. 9 Indiana (10-9) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. The Lions will face No. 4 Peters Township in the semifinals Monday.
In other Class 2A quarterfinals, Peters Township beat No. 12 Chartiers Valley, 12-2, No. 2 Mars blanked No. 7 Bethel Park, 18-0, and No. 3 Hampton took care of No. 6 Penn-Trafford, 16-4.
Boys volleyball
Seneca Valley 3, Canon-McMillan 1 – No. 2 Seneca Valley swept No. 7 Canon-McMillan, 25-13, 25-19, 25-23, in the Class 3A quarterfinals. Justin Peters led the Big Macs with seven kills, 10 assists and three aces.
In other Class 3A quarterfinals, No. 1 North Allegheny beat No. 8 Mt. Lebanon, 3-0, No. 5 Pine-Richland got past No. 4 Hempfield, 5-4, and No. 6 Penn-Trafford upset No. 3 Latrobe, 3-2.
In Class 2A, No. 1 Shaler 3 blanked No. 9 Hopwell, 3-0, No. 5 South Fayette took out No. 4 North Catholic, 3-1, No. 2 Ambridge defeated No. 7 Thomas Jefferson, 3-1, and No. 6 Mars upended No. 3 Seton LaSalle, 3-2.
