High school roundup for Jan. 31: Teams earn spots in WPIAL wrestling semifinals

The WPIAL wrestling final four is set for Class AAA and AA, as eight teams can look forward to Saturday's semifinals matches.

Canon-McMillan, Hempfield, Waynesburg and Kiski Area advanced in Class AAA, while Burrell, McGuffey, Derry and Freedom are the Class AA semifinalists.

Hempfield will face Canon-McMillan, and Kiski Area and Waynesburg will meet in the other semifinal at noon Saturday at Trinity.

The winners will then compete for the WPIAL championship at 2 p.m.

In Class AA, Burrell will face McGuffey and Derry takes on Freedom at noon at Chartiers-Houston. The winners will then face off at 2 p.m.

Canon-McMillan 62, Hampton 3 — Tim Hritsko, Tanner Rohaley, Alec Hendal and Zach Rohaley all had pins as No. 1 Canon-McMillan (9-0) won a Class AAA quarterfinal.

Hempfield 32, Seneca Valley 31 — The No. 5-seeded Spartans (18-1) rallied for a 32-31 victory after gaining the extra point by criteria E, most six-point wins.

After Hempfield sophomore Dillon Ferretti's 10-3 win against Nick Funovits at 220 pounds tied the score at 31-31 in the final bout, officials had to look through the rule book and criteria formula to determine the winning team.

Kiski Area 62, Greensburg Salem 6 — No. 2 Kiski Area won 13 of 14 bouts, getting pins from Jared Curcio, Jack Blumer and Troy Kuhn, to roll to a WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinal victory. Logan Pollick added a technical fall for the Cavaliers, who advanced to the semifinals Saturday against No. 3 Waynesburg. Jesse Quatse had a pin for the Golden Lions at 170 pounds.

Greensburg Salem beat North Allegheny, 35-33, in the semifinals, with coach Randy Parsley getting his 200th career victory. Joey Williams had a pin in the win, and Greensburg Salem also picked up three forfeits.

Waynesburg 52, Connellsville 22 — Wyatt Henson (120 pounds), Colby Morris (152), Trey Howard (160) and Kyle Homet (170) all had pins to lead No. 3 Waynesburg (14-2) to a Class AAA quarterfinal win.

Burrell 62, Mt. Pleasant 12 — The Vikings (8-5) won two of the first four bouts, but the No. 1 Bucs took control from there in a WPIAL Class AA quarterfinal at Burrell. Zack Charlesworth (195) and Cody Vokes (285), both No. 3 at their respective weight classes in the Tribune-Review rankings, picked up victories by fall for Mt. Pleasant.

Derry 47, Elizabeth Forward 25 — Derry spotted Elizabeth Forward 13 points in a WPIAL Class AA quarterfinal, but the host Trojans won the next eight bouts en route to a victory.

Ty Cymmerman (120 pounds) earned a technical fall, Shawn Broadway (126) won by forfeit, Jason Baker (132) had a pin, Onreey Stewart (138) and Dom Jellison (145) won by decision, Trey Weinell (152) and Gannon Lenhart (160) earned pins and Hunter Hebenthal (170) won by forfeit.

The No. 2-seeded Trojans (20-1), who also defeated Keystone Oaks, 64-15, in the first round.

Freedom 35, Beth-Center 33 — ZJ Ward, Jake Pail, Chase Komara and Mike Muron had pins as Freedom (10-4) rallied for a WPIAL Class AA quarterfinal win.

McGuffey 38, South Fayette 31 — In the Class AA quarterfinals at Canon-McMillan, Luke Shingle earned a pin in the final bout to seal a victory for McGuffey (14-5).

Boys basketball

Quaker Valley 81, Blackhawk 48 — Coletrane Washington had 29 points, including five 3-pointers, as No. 1 Quaker Valley (16-0, 11-0) clinched the Section 2-4A title. It's the Quakers' first section title since 2004-05.

South Fayette 58, Uniontown 53 — Conner Mislan scored 23 points as South Fayette (11-6, 8-3) won in Section 3-4A.

Greensburg Central Catholic 77, Summit Academy 52 — Geoff Helm scored 29 points and Max Pisula added 16 as Greensburg Central Catholic (3-14, 3-6) won a Section 1-2A game.

Propel Andrew Street 46, Winchester Thurston 31 — Dareius Davis had 17 points and Dusan Krivokapic added 15 for Propel Andrew Street (11-5, 6-2) in a Section 3-A win.

Carrick 69, Bethel Park 60 — Lamar Lewis had 19 points and Vernon Washington scored 17 as Carrick (15-4) won a nonsection game. Ryan Meis scored 26 points for Bethel Park (10-8).

Cornell 52, Fort Cherry 40 — Zaier Harrison had 14 points for Cornell (14-5) in a nonsection victory.

Gateway 64, Indiana 50 — John Paul Kromka had 25 points, and Mark Bozicevic added 20 points, including six 3-pointers, as Gateway (9-8) won a nonsection game. Carlos Carter had 23 points for Class 4A No. 4 Indiana (13-3).

Jeannette 60, Apollo-Ridge 47 — Sparked by a 22-8 second-quarter run, Class 2A No. 3 Jeannette (13-2) won a nonsection game. Tre Cunningham had 32 points and 12 rebounds for the Jayhawks. Kyle Fitzoy scored 20 points and had 15 rebounds for Apollo-Ridge (5-12).

Monessen 81, Southmoreland 55 — Lyndon Henderson scored 33 points for Class A No. 2 Monessen (10-7) in a nonsection victory. Jason Szatkowksi scored 15 points to lead Southmoreland (4-15).

Girls basketball

Greensburg Central Catholic 39, California 36 — Anna Eisaman scored 11 points, including two free throws with 3.6 seconds left, to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (9-7, 8-3) over visiting California (11-5, 8-3). Bailey Vig's 15 points led California, which dropped to a second-place tie with GCC in Section 3-2A, a one game behind Serra Catholic.

Frazier 68, Monessen 41 — Brooke Poling netted 28 points for Frazier (11-7) in a nonsection win. Qitarah Hardison and Jahnell Jackson each had 12 points for Monessen (2-16).
