High school roundup for Jan. 29: No. 3 Thomas Jefferson girls rally past Oakland Catholic

Thomas Jefferson's No. 3-ranked girls basketball team was shut out in the second quarter of Monday's key Section 2-5A showdown with No. 4 Oakland Catholic.

The second half was a different story. The Jaguars rallied from a 17-point halftime deficit to win 45-42.

They opened the third quarter with a 26-14 run. Marina Petruzzi had 19 points and Jenna Clark scored 15 for Thomas Jefferson (15-3, 7-1).

Jayde Boyd had 11 points and Cierra Christian scored 10 for Oakland Catholic (11-6, 6-2).

North Allegheny 35, Seneca Valley 24 — Rachel Martindale had 10 points for No. 1 North Allegheny (17-0, 8-0) as the Tigers won in Section 1-6A.

North Hills 44, Shaler 42 — Claire Babicz scored with 10 second left to guide North Hills (5-12, 1-7) to a win in Section 1-6A. Sydney Ryan had 17 points and Abigail McElhaney added 15 on five 3-pointers for the Indians.

Canon-McMillan 66, Baldwin 58 — Tamara Mathis scored 25 points as Canon-McMillan (10-7, 2-6) won in Section 3-6A. Abbey Larkin scored 28 for Baldwin (3-13, 0-8).

Peters Township 49, Upper St. Clair 38 — Makenna Marisa scored 21 points to lead No. 2 Peters Township (15-2, 7-1) to a win in Section 3-6A.

Gateway 47, Woodland Hills 29 — Lexi Jackson's 14 points led Gateway (15-3, 6-2) in a Section 2-5A win.

Trinity 71, Laurel Highlands 32 — Alayna Cappelli had 19 points and Riley DeRubbo added 17 as No. 1 Trinity (16-3, 10-0) won in Section 3-5A. Laurel Highlands (2-17, 1-8) was outscored 38-7 in the second half.

Hampton 52, Franklin Regional 38 — Ali Collins scored 22 points and Laryn Edwards added 21 as No. 2 Hampton (14-3, 10-0) won a Section 4-5A game.

Jordan Yaniga had 14 points to lead Franklin Regional (8-10, 3-6).

Mars 66, Indiana 34 — Lauren Wasylson had 21 points and Tai Johnson added 17 as Mars (14-4, 8-1) won a Section 4-5A game.

Freeport 44, Knoch 38 — Jenna Manke scored a game-high 20 points, and Freeport tightened its grip on second place in Section 1-4A with a victory.

Sidney Shemanski added 10 points for the Yellowjackets (10-6, 7-2), who outscored Knoch, 13-5, in the first quarter on the way to completing a season sweep over the rival Knights.

Emily Fraser and Gabby Fennell both led Knoch (8-9, 6-2) with 12 points each.

Beaver 45, Ambridge 37 — Bella Posset had 28 points to lift Beaver (13-5, 7-2) to a win in Section 2-4A.

Belle Vernon 60, Derry 37 — Kelsey Green had 13 points, 15 rebounds, five steals and five assists as Belle Vernon won a Section 3-4A game. It was the seventh straight victory for Belle Vernon.

Rachel Wobrak added 13 points for the Leopards (15-4, 10-1), who stayed in second place in Section 3 behind Keystone Oaks (15-3, 11-0).

Kamryn Kelly had 14 points to lead Derry (1-16, 1-10), which has lost four straight.

Charleroi 68, Waynesburg 26 — Sierra Short had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Kaitlyn Riley added 20 points for No. 5 Charleroi (16-2, 9-1) in a Section 2-3A win.

Apollo-Ridge 40, Avonworth 35 — Apollo-Ridge (10-7, 6-4) won a crucial Section 3-3A game to take over sole possession of second place.

Megan Ost led Apollo-Ridge with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Lily Tedesco led Avonworth (12-7, 5-4) with 11 points.

Bishop Canevin 70, Steel Valley 23 — Bri Allen had 22 points to guide No. 1 Bishop Canevin (14-3, 10-0) to a Section 3-3A win.

Seton LaSalle 62, Carlynton 48 — Layni Ziegler scored 22 points to guide Seton LaSalle (8-11, 5-5) to a win in Section 3-3A.

Keystone Oaks 66, Yough 14 — Gillian Piccolino had 27 points as Keystone Oaks (15-3, 11-0) topped Yough (0-18, 0-11) in Section 3-4A.

South Park 42, Mt. Pleasant 23 — Cassidy Zandier had 10 points as South Park (10-8, 7-4) defeated Mt. Pleasant (5-12, 3-8) in a Section 3-4A game. The Eagles opened the second half on a 15-1 run.

Chartiers-Houston 58, Aliquippa 26 — Alexa Wililamson had 43 points and 16 rebounds to lead No. 3 Chartiers-Houston (13-5, 10-1) to a Section 1-2A triumph.

OLSH 55, Washington 44 — Kennede Mickle had 25 points to guide No. 2 OLSH (16-2, 10-1) to a Section 1-2A win. Carley Allen had 24 points for Washington (10-6, 7-4).

Ellis School 58, Springdale 25 — Anna Harmon led Springdale (1-15, 0-11) with 14 points as the Dynamos fell to Section 2-2A rival Ellis School (3-15, 2-9).

Riverview 46, Sto-Rox 37 — Sydney McDonough scored 20 points as Riverview held off Sto-Rox in Section 2-2A play. Francesca Lio chipped in 10 points for Riverview (9-8, 5-6). Lexi Frazze scored 22 points for Sto-Rox (9-8, 3-8).

Frazier 61, Greensburg C.C. 52 — Brooke Poling had 21 points to lead Frazier (10-7, 7-4) to a Section 3-2A win. Melina Maietta had 24 points and Anna Eisaman scored 12 for Greensburg Central Catholic (8-7, 7-3), which had a six-game winning streak snapped.

Serra Catholic 72, Jeannette 42 — Rayna Andrews scored 17 points as Serra Catholic (12-5, 9-2) secured a Section 3-2A win. The Eagles used a 25-13 second-quarter run to pull ahead.

Dymond Crawford scored 11 points for Jeannette (6-12, 4-7).

West Greene 70, Monessen 22 — Madison Lampe had 22 points to lift No. 2 West Greene (16-1, 8-0) to a victory in Section 2-A. Marqula Green had nine points for Monessen (2-15, 1-7).

Aquinas Academy 51, Imani Christian 27 — Mary Casamassa had 24 points to lead Aquinas Academy (13-4, 6-2) to a Section 3-A win.

St. Joseph 74, Clairton 49 — Chloe Kurpakus scored a game-high 28 points in St. Joseph's Section 3-A win over Clairton. Nevaeh Ewing scored 16 points and Gia Angelo added 13 points for St. Joseph (11-8, 5-3). Ionia Chapman scored 16 points to lead Clairton (7-11, 2-6).

Winchester Thurston 72, Eden Christian Academy 44 — Gia Thorpe had 24 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists as No. 1 Winchester Thurston (11-4, 8-0) won in Section 3-A. Ayanna Townsend added 23 points and Nya Nicholson had 21 for Winchester Thurston.

Boys basketball

New Castle 71, Beaver 62 — Marcus Hooker and Carrington Smith each had 19 points as No. 3 New Castle (12-4, 7-3) won in Section 2-4A.

Burrell 43, Shady Side Academy 37 (OT) — Donovan Russell posted a triple-double with 10 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocked shots, and Burrell downed Shady Side Academy to claim a share of the Section 3-3A lead. Logan Bitar scored a game-high 21 points for Burrell (8-10, 5-2). Skyy Moore and Grady Munroe both led Shady Side Academy (10-7, 5-2) with 12 points.

Kiski Area 68, Blairsville 54 — The Cavaliers came out a winner for the first time this season, downing nonsection foe Blairsville. Nick Smith led Kiski Area (1-16) with 17 points, Jack Colecchi chipped in with 15 and Austin Schwartz 14. Matt Jackson finished with a game-high 24 points to lead Blairsville (5-14).

Hockey

Burrell 8, Trinity 3 — Tyler Stewart and Logan Schoepf scored two goals each as Burrell defeated Trinity in Division II play. Nathan Smith and Jonah Silverman recorded two assists each for Burrell (11-4). Colin Bistarkey made 28 saves to earn the win. Joseph Chopp scored one goal and recorded one assist for Trinity (5-8).

Fox Chapel 5, South Fayette 2 — Shane Krhovsky recorded a hat-trick in Fox Chapel's Class A win over South Fayette. Chase Villani scored one goal and added two assists for Fox Chapel (9-6). Tyler Radigan recorded 26 saves to earn the victory. Ian Kumar and Daniel Pollock scored one goal each for South Fayette (10-5).

South Park 8, Kiski Area 1 — The Eagles put up five goals in the second period to take control as Kiski Area (8-8) fell to South Park (10-7) in a PIHL Class A matchup. Austin LaPiana scored for Kiski Area.

North Allegheny 4, Plum 1 — Anthony Adamski gave the Mustangs (4-8) an early first-period lead before the Tigers (8-4) came back with four unanswered goals in a PIHL Class AAA matchup.
