High school roundup for Feb. 28, 2024: Gateway, Serra boys, Monessen girls earn PIAA berths

Alex Lowry hit the go-ahead layup with 1:12 left and Alex Dunsmore made two free throws with 41 seconds to play to salt it away as No. 7 Gateway defeated No. 12 Kiski Area, 53-51, to win the Class 5A boys basketball seventh-place game and claim the WPIAL’s final spot in the PIAA tournament.
Lowry finished with 15 points, Dunsmore had 12 and Mykel Bruce-McCrommon added 10 for the Gators (18-8). Colin Keller scored 16 points and Isaiah Gonzalez added nine for the Cavaliers (16-10).
Fox Chapel 57, Bethel Park 36 – Will Siegel had 16 points and six rebounds and Jefferson Moorefield-Brown added 10 points as No. 8 Fox Chapel (15-11) rolled to a win in the Class 5A fifth-place game. Shawn Davis led No. 11 Bethel Park (13-13) with 18 points. The Foxes outscored the Black Hawks 30-15 in the second half.
McDowell 62, Allderdice 54 – Tyler Grove scored 32 points and Kamden Kramer added 13 to lead District 10 champ McDowell in a PIAA Class 6A suberegional game. Ma’ayan Kohai scored 17 points and Logan Golle and Azerick Jetter added 10 each for City League champ Allderdice (20-4).
Mohawk 61, Neshannock 59 – Jay Wrona scored 19 points, Bobby Fadden added 18 and Mason Hopper finished with 12 as No. 2 Mohawk (18-8) defeated No. 4 Neshannock (20-5) for third place in the Class 3A bracket and to win the three-game season series between the section rivals. David Kwiat scored 17 and Jake Rynd added 16 for the Lancers.
Serra Catholic 67, Eden Christian 65 – Pete Burke scored 24 points and a trio of teammates – Mekhi Underwood, Owen Dumbroski and Isiah Petty – added 12 points each as No. 8 Serra Catholic (17-9) won the Class 2A seventh-place game to claim the final WPIAL playoff spot in the PIAA tournament. Nathan Garrett, Mason Dean and Grayson Reichert each scored 18 points for No. 10 Eden Christian (13-13).
Shady Side Academy 62, Derry 58 – Seamus Riordan scored 27 points and Eli Teslovich added 25 as No. 3 Shady Side Academy (18-8) won the Class 3A fifth-place game. Stanley Rajkovich scored 21 points and Nate Papuga added 15 for No. 12 Derry (15-8).
Shaler 75, Thomas Jefferson 71 – Brandon London scored 20 points to lead four players in double figures as No. 3 Shaler (23-3) won the Class 5A third-place game. Keegan Smetanka added 15, Kaden Orga 14 and TJ Belles 11 for the Titans. Evan Berger scored 21 and Nicholas Trklja added 16 for No. 4 Thomas Jefferson (21-5).
Girls basketball
Aquinas Academy 45, Riverview 37 – Tess Duer scored 10 points and No. 2 Aquinas Academy (17-7) rallied from a point down entering the fourth quarter to win the Class A third-place game. Katerina Tsambis and Lily Bauer scored 10 points apiece and Isabel Chaparro hit three 3-pointers for No. 4 Riverview (16-8). The Crusaders went 7 of 9 from the free-throw line. The Raiders were 0 for 4.
Monessen 44, Bishop Canevin 41 – MyAsia Majors scored 14 points and Madison Johnson added 10 as No. 5 Monessen (20-6) earned a PIAA playoff spot for the second straight season by winning the Class A fifth-place game. Amari Elliott scored 11 points and Isabella Sysak added 10 for No. 6 Bishop Canevin (8-15).
Peters Township 73, Chartiers Valley 59 – Gemma Walker scored 22 points to lead No. 2 Peters Township (23-2) in the Class 6A third-place game. Bri Morreale added 14, Natalie Wetzel 12 and Daniela Radulovich 11 for Peters. Ella Cupka scored 22 and Lilah Turnbull and Emma Reynolds each added 12 for No. 5 Chartiers Valley (17-7).
Trinity 64, Lincoln Park 60 – Sutton Williamson scored 26 points and Ruby Morgan hit six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points as No. 3 Trinity (20-6) won the Class 5A third-place game. J’La Kizart scored 18 points, Sarah Scott added 17 and Maddie Syka had 15 for No. 4 Lincoln Park (22-4).
