Cecilia Christy scored 13 points to lead No. 13 Mars to a 44-23 upset of No. 4 Shaler (20-3) in the WPIAL Class 5A girls basketball first round Friday night. Alexis Cashdollar and Carmella McDole both had 11 points to help the Fightin’ Planets (14-9) advance to the quarterfinals Wednesday against No. 12 Bethel Park.
Avonworth 67, Beaver Falls 35 – Greta O’Brien scored a career-high 33 points to lead No. 6 Avonworth (16-7) past No. 11 Beaver Falls (12-8) in the Class 3A first round. Emma Obersteiner added 15 points for the Antelopes, who will meet No. 3 OLSH in the quarterfinals Wednesday.
Baldwin 73, Chartiers Valley 72 – Julianne Ott scored 30 points to lead No. 9 Baldwin (15-8) to a Class 5A first-round win. Lynsey Bernotas had 22 points to help advance the Highlanders to the quarterfinals against top-seeded South Fayette on Wednesday. Emma Reynolds (23), Lyla Ozbey (13) and Ava Shazer (11) combined for 47 points for No. 8 Chartiers Valley (15-8).
Ellwood City 49, Seton LaSalle 41 – Delaney Sturgeon went off for 28 points as No. 12 Ellwood City (14-8) pulled off the Class 3A first-round upset. The Wolverines, who will face No. 4 Keystone Oaks in the quarterfinals Wednesday, took a 15-11 lead after one quarter and made it stand up. Tiara Curry scored 19 points and Natalie Pascarella hit three 3-pointers for No. 5 Seton LaSalle (16-7).
Greensburg Central Catholic 66, Brownsville 31 – Erica Gribble led all scorers with 27 points as No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic (18-5) earned a Class 3A first-round win. Jayla Peterson added 16 for the Centurions, who will take on No. 7 Quaker Valley in the quarterfinals Wednesday. Skyler Gates scored 17 points to lead No. 15 Brownsville (13-10).
Indiana 44, Moon 39 – No. 7 Indiana (18-5) defeated No. 10 Moon (13-8) in the Class 5A first round. The Little Indians will meet No. 2 Peters Township in the quarterfinals Wednesday. Jaedin Griggs scored 14 points and Maria Depner added 12 for the Tigers.
Keystone Oaks 56, Ligonier Valley 31 – Four Golden Eagles scored in double digits, led by Laney Wagner’s 11, as No. 4 Keystone Oaks (19-2) advanced in the Class 3A playoffs. Kailyn Brannon, Hannah York and Natalie Tortorella each had 10 for the Golden Eagles, who will face No. 12 Ellwood City in the quarterfinals Wednesday. Sydnee Foust had nine points and 12 rebounds for No. 13 Ligonier Valley (7-15).
OLSH 56, South Allegheny 8 – Claudia Ierullo scored 15 points to guide No. 3 OLSH (20-3) to the first-round win in Class 3A. The Chargers will take on No. 6 Avonworth on Wednesday.
Penn-Trafford 63, Plum 46 – Isabella Klobucar hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points to lead undefeated No. 3 Penn-Trafford (23-0) to a first-round win in Class 5A. Lauren Marton and Torrie DeStefano added 12 points each for the Warriors, who will take on No. 6 Thomas Jefferson in the quarterfinals Wednesday. Serena Carnahan scored 19 points and Riley Stephans added 17 for No. 14 Plum (10-13).
Peters Township 66, Fox Chapel 58 – Bri Morreale (21 points) and Daniela Radulovich (20) combined for 41 points in a Class 5A opening-round win for No. 2 Peters Township’s (20-3). Taylor McCullough had 10 points to help the Indians, who were without leading scorer Natalie Wetzel due to an ankle injury, advance to take on No. 7 Indiana in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Lyla Jablon had 23 points while Bella Urso had 20 for No. 15 Fox Chapel (13-10).
Quaker Valley 39, McGuffey 35 – Mimi Thiero had 25 points to send No. 7 Quaker Valley (15-8) to a Class 3A quarterfinal matchup against No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic on Wednesday. Taylor Schumacher scored 15 points for No. 10 McGuffey (13-9).
Riverside 56, Deer Lakes 26 – Emma Meyer hit for 23 points to lead No. 8 Riverside (15-8) in the Class 3A first round. Camryn Friello added 17 for the Panthers, who will face top-seeded Shady Side Academy in the quarterfinals Wednesday. Tessa Hollibaugh scored nine points to lead No. 9 Deer Lakes (14-9).
South Fayette 57, Greensburg Salem 30 – No. 1 South Fayette (22-1) was led by Haylie Lamonde’s 19 points and Juliette Leroux’s 13 points in the Class 5A first-round win. Vienna Jevicky had 11 points for No. 16 Greensburg Salem (13-10). South Fayette will take on No. 9 Baldwin on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.
Boys basketball
Central Valley 80, Derry 55 – Isaiah Jeter hit seven 3-pointers and finished with 33 points to lead No. 6 Central Valley (19-4) to a Class 4A first-round win. Angelo Conti added 12 points for the Warriors, who will meet No. 3 Beaver in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Stanley Rajkovic led No. 11 Derry (12-10) with 18 points. Logan Irvin added 14 and John Wasnick had 11.
