High school roundup for April 6, 2018: Seneca Valley softball smacks 5 homers to top Shaler

Seneca Valley belted five home runs, including Madison Hans' solo shot in the seventh inning, to earn an 8-7 victory over host Shaler in a Section 3-6A softball game Friday afternoon.
Claire Zimmerman had two home runs and three RBIs, and Karli Hacker and Morgan Aloi also homered for Seneca Valley (2-1, 1-0).
Zimmerman earned the win in the circle.
Tori Martrano had two hits for Shaler (0-2, 0-1).
Mt. Lebanon 1, Peters Township 0 — Megan Dietrick's RBI double in the third inning helped Mt. Lebanon (1-0, 1-0) earn a Section 1-6A victory.
Catie Rogan threw a two-hitter with nine strikeouts in the win.
Kate Hondru allowed three hits and had five strikeouts for Peters Township (3-3, 1-1).
Hempfield 2, Fox Chapel 0 — Maddie Uschock pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts for Class 6A No. 1 Hempfield (2-0, 1-0) in a Section 2 win at Fox Chapel. Megan Monzo and Samantha Kline knocked in runs. Emma Humes allowed one earned run with four strikeouts for the Foxes (1-1, 0-1).
Franklin Regional 7, Kiski Area 4 — A six-run fifth inning propelled Franklin Regional (3-1, 1-0) to a come-from-behind win in a Section 1-5A opener. Kate Alexander, Abby Kane and Kylie O'Neal delivered two-run hits for the Panthers in the inning, and Angalee Beall stranded the bases loaded in the top of the sixth to keep Kiski Area at bay. Kassandra Cessna had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for Kiski Area (0-1, 0-1).
Penn-Trafford 8, Plum 2 — In Section 1-5A, Morgan Nedley was 2 for 3 with a home run, double and three RBIs as Penn-Trafford (2-0, 2-0) earned a win. Emma Little, Emma Armstrong and Sammi Smith had two hits each. Morgan Hilty tossed a four-hitter.
Belle Vernon 5, West Mifflin 0 — Bailey Parshall was 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs and threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts to give No. 2 Belle Vernon (2-1, 1-1) a Section 2-4A victory.
Yough 7, Keystone Oaks 3 — Aubrie Mance had two RBIs, and Nina Maroney was 2 for 3 with an RBI double as No. 3 Yough (4-1, 1-0) won in Section 2-4A.
Kierra Waywood earned the win.
Central Valley 12, Ambridge 11 — Natalie Mowad had three hits and four RBIs and Calista Taormina homered to guide Central Valley (2-0, 1-0) to a Section 3-4A win.
Steel Valley 6, Freedom 5 (8 inn.) — Kayla Hartnett went 2 for 5 and hit a walk-off double in the eighth inning as Steel Valley (3-1, 2-0) won in Section 2-3A.
South Park 16, Charleroi 0 (4 inn.) — Kaitlin Morrison was 3 for 3 with three home runs and seven RBIs as No. 1 South Park (2-0, 2-0) won in Section 3-3A.
Kaitlyn Pavlick was 4 for 4 with two doubles, two home runs and four RBIs.
Waynesburg 18, Southmoreland 8 — Paige Rutan and Sydney Hare homered to carry Waynesburg (4-1, 2-0) to a Section 3-3A win. Emily Eutsey doubled for Southmoreland (1-2, 1-1).
Mohawk 10, South Side 1 — In Section 4-2A, Madison Shiderly was 3 for 4 with two home runs, a double and six RBIs to lift Mohawk (2-0, 1-0) to victory.
West Greene 8, Monessen 1 — McKenna Lampe had four hits, and Madison Lampe and Madison Renner had three each to lift No. 1 West Greene (5-1, 2-0) to a Section 2-A win. Dana Vatakis went 2 for 3 for No. 2 Monessen (1-1, 0-1). She had 14 strikeouts.
Leechburg 12, Bishop Canevin 10 — Morgan Pierce had a big day, both in the pitching circle and at the plate for Leechburg in its Section 3-A opener.
Pierce hit for the cycle and picked up the pitching victory as the Blue Devils (2-1, 1-0) scored a victory over the Crusaders (1-1, 0-1).
She struck out three in the complete-game effort.
Freshman McKenna Pierce went 4 for 4 and picked up two RBIs for Leechburg, and Kiera Jones also added a pair of singles.
Riverview 8, Jeannette 2 — Alyssa Cappa homered and tripled, and Anne Betler added a home run in a Section 3-A win for Riverview (1-0, 1-0). Kelsey Phillips doubled for the Raiders, who scored six runs in the third to break the game open. Taylor-Lynn Finken doubled and had two RBIs for the Jayhawks (0-2, 0-2).
Chartiers-Houston 10, CW North Catholic 0 (5 inn.) — Kaci Alderson, Ella Brookman and Karlyn Bayer all homered as No. 2 Chartiers-Houston (3-0) won a nonsection game.
Deer Lakes 6, Mars 5 — Casey Buechel scored Katrina Taliani with a well-placed bunt single for what proved to be the winning run in a comeback victory for Deer Lakes (1-0) in a nonsection game at Mars (2-3). The Lancers trailed 5-4 after six innings, but scored twice in the top of the seventh. Danielle Huffman had an RBI double for the Lancers.
Derry 5, Greensburg Salem 1 — Kam Kelly had two hits and two RBIs, and Riley Watson had two doubles as Derry (1-1) won a nonsection game. Alanna Meloy had two RBIs, and freshman Alexis Jellison earned the win.
Mattie White took the loss for Greensburg Salem (1-2).
Baseball
Bethel Park 10, Allderdice 0 (5 inn.) — Magdiel Cotto pitched three no-hit innings and also contributed a triple for Bethel Park (1-2, 1-0) in a Section 3-6A win.
Laurel Highlands 14, Franklin Regional 0 (5 inn.) — Andino Vecchiolla tossed a one-hitter to lift Laurel Highlands (2-0, 2-0) to a Section 3-5A win. Bronson Ianno had the lone hit for the Panthers (3-2, 1-1).
Freeport 10 Highlands 0 (6 inn.) — Back-to-back triples in the second inning by Aiden Skradski and Sean Furlong paced a four-run outburst for the Yellowjackets (2-0, 2-0) en route to a Section 1-4A win. Furlong had three base hits to back the shutout pitching of Brodey Cowan. The Golden Rams (0-2, 0-2) were led by Josh Stuckley's two singles.
Yough 2, Deer Lakes 0 — Jarett Bach allowed just one hit and had 13 strikeouts in 5 2⁄3 innings to guide Yough (1-0, 1-0) to a Section 1-4A victory. Scott Houseman finished off the win on the mound, allowing one hit with one strikeout. Dom Koch had two hits and two RBIs for the Cougars. Greg Geis scattered five hits and had eight strikeouts for Deer Lakes (4-2, 1-1).
Blackhawk 11, Ambridge 1 (6 inn.) — Mike Turconi allowed two hits and one unearned run while striking out 15 to lead No. 1 Blackhawk (3-0, 2-0) to a Section 2-4A win.
Central Valley 6, New Castle 5 — Michael Sittig and Matt Ramsey each had three hits as Central Valley (4-0, 2-0) won in Section 2-4A.
Ringgold 7, Keystone Oaks 4 — Ryan Varley doubled, homered and had four RBIs as Ringgold (2-0, 1-0) won in Section 3-4A.
Bishop Canevin 11, Northgate 1 (6 inn.) — Brian De Schon went 3 for 3 and Matt Colantonio had three RBIs to lead Bishop Canevin (1-1, 1-1) to a Section 3-2A win.
Burrell 15, Springdale 0 (4 inn) — Luke Virag struck out eight batters over three innings, hit a triple, and had three RBIs as Burrell dominated Springdale (0-2) in a nonsection game. Zac Miller also had a pair of singles and two RBIs and Nick Hwostock added a double for the Bucs (1-0).
Carlynton 3, Apollo-Ridge 0 — Apollo-Ridge (0-1, 0-1) was limited to four hits by Carlynton starting pitcher Zack Oddi in a Section 3-2A loss. Carlynton (2-1, 1-1) turned a 6-4-3-2 triple play in the game.
Greensburg Salem 1, Mt. Pleasant 0 (10 inn.) — Andrew Rosenberg singled home Nick Demary in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Greensburg Salem (1-2) a nonsection victory. Aaren Putt earned the win.
Joe Shrum took the loss for Mt. Pleasant (0-2), which was held to three hits.
Fox Chapel 9, Shaler 5 — Jonathan Simon, Alex Miles and Noah Marks all collected two hits to help Fox Chapel (1-1) earn a nonsection win at Shaler (2-3). Simon drove in three runs and earned the win on the mound, pitching four innings. Miles had two RBIs and a rare three-inning save. T.J. Johnston doubled twice for the Foxes and drove in a run.
Hempfield 14, Kiski Area 1 (5 inn.) — Luke Hudson had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs as Class 6A No. 5 Hempfield (3-1) scored a nonsection win. Winning pitcher Justin Wright added three hits and two RBIs, and Tyler Dancu had two hits and two RBIs for the Spartans.
Billy Perroz went 2 for 3 for Kiski Area (0-1).
Jeannette 11, St. Joseph 1 (5 inn.) — Drake Petrillo was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs to help Jeannette (2-1) earn a nonsection victory in five innings. Derrick Miller tossed a three-hitter with seven strikeouts.
Bowen Lambermont took the loss for St. Joseph (0-2).
Norwin 19, Derry 5 — Owen Sabol had two hits and four RBIs, and Logan Liebdzinski and Kristian Kubacka had three RBIs each as Class 6A No. 4 Norwin (1-1) rolled to a nonsection win.
Isaac Buterbaugh was 3 for 3 with a triple for Derry (0-2).
Penn-Trafford 14, East Allegheny 0 (3 inn.) — MacLean Maund, Tyler Chrise and Dominic Costellic combined for a three-inning no-hitter as Penn-Trafford (2-1) won a nonsection game.
Seneca Valley 9, Baldwin 3 — Josh McClean homered for Seneca Valley (3-1) in a nonsection win.
Serra Catholic 10, Western Beaver 0 (6 inn.) — Zach Bowen threw a two-hitter and went 3 for 4 as Class 2A No. 1 Serra Catholic (6-0) won a nonsection game.
Mark Black was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.
Ligonier Valley 15, Saltsburg 0 (4 inn.) — J.P. Salancy had two doubles and three RBIs, and Ethan Boring and John Caldwell had two RBIs each to guide Ligonier Valley (1-1, 1-0) to a District 6 Heritage Conference win. Caldwell tossed a two-hitter.
