High school roundup for April 5, 2024: Mt. Lebanon inches past Canon McMillan, 1-0

Graham Keen hit an RBI double in the top of the first inning and three pitchers combined on a shutout for Mt. Lebanon in a 1-0 victory over Canon-McMillan in Section 2-6A baseball Friday.

David Shields started and pitched three innings, allowing no hits and striking out seven. Sawyer Klasnick threw two innings of relief and Luca Borris worked two to earn the save for the Blue Devils (5-2, 2-1). Alexander Shank and Nico Patragas doubled and hard-luck losing pitcher Kolton Smittle allowed five hits in a complete game for the Big Macs (1-4, 1-2).

Beaver 14, Sewickley Academy 4 – Jackson Reese went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Domenic Bumblis doubled and drove in two runs to lead Beaver (4-2-1) to a nonsection win. Derek Hughes and Ronald Sebak each doubled and plated a run for the Bobcats. Michael Woo had two hits and two RBIs for Sewickley Academy (0-3).

Hempfield 5, Central Catholic 3 – Colin Polechko went 3 for 3 with two doubles and Ethan Minerva singled and drove in a pair to lead Hempfield (7-0, 3-0) to a Section 2-6A sweep. Starter Chase Sikorski gave up one hit in four scoreless innings for the Spartans. Landon Greene singled and doubled for Central Catholic (3-4, 0-3).

Hampton 7, North Catholic 6 – Brady Smith hit a game-tying two-run triple and Chad Moore followed with the walk-off RBI single to lead Hampton (3-1, 1-1) to a Section 4-4A win. Sean Sullivan doubled and drove in two runs and Brady Long and Justin Dubee each singled and doubled for the Talbots. Blake Primrose hit a single and double and Owen Beatrice had two RBIs for North Catholic (1-2, 1-1).

Penn-Trafford 9, Armstrong 2 – Ian Temple singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Chuck Fontana had three hits to power Penn-Trafford (4-1, 2-1) to a Section 1-5A victory. Ethan Septak drove in three runs and Brayden Stone and Jason Sabol doubled for the Warriors. Brayden Wright singled and doubled and Mason Mills had two hits and an RBI for Armstrong (1-3, 0-3).

Seneca Valley 17, Allderdice 3 – Kallen Durbin went 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs and Owen Yarussi went 2 for 2 and drove in three runs to lead Seneca Valley (5-1-1, 3-0) to a Section 1-6A win. Mike Delduca doubled and drove in a pair, Creed Erdos had two hits and two RBIs, and Ryan Piekutoski also plated a pair for the Raiders. Satyan Chickering drove in two runs and Zack Shook had two hits for Allderdice (1-4, 0-3).

Shady Side Academy 6, Burrell 3 – Soren Cooper and David Dillon each singled and doubled and Caden Green had two hits and two RBIs to lead Shady Side Academy (4-0, 4-0) to a Section 3-3A win. Cooper was the winning pitcher and Dillon picked up the save. AJ McClafferty had two hits and Justin Hyland doubled for Burrell (1-4, 1-3).

Softball

Burrell 26, Shady Side Academy 8 – Pyper Ferres with 4 for 4 with a double, a homer and three RBIs and Braelyn Jones was 4 for 5 with three doubles and five RBIs to power Burrell (3-2, 1-0) to a Section 1-3A win. Shelby Novak went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs, Bella Stewart singled, homered and drove in three, and Sabrina Hoover had a single, triple and four RBIs for the Bucs. Becca Schriver homered and drove in three for Shady Side Academy (0-1, 0-1).

Latrobe 15, Gateway 0 – Kayla Williams and Macie McHugh combined on a three-inning perfect game for Latrobe (2-3, 1-0) in a Section 2-5A win over Gateway (0-4, 0-1). Williams and Sami Kronewetter doubled for the Wildcats, who scored 15 runs on two hits, 15 walks and three hit batters.

Deer Lakes 3, Freeport 1 – Deer Lakes managed just one hit off Freeport pitcher Sydney Selker on Friday, but it was a three-run homer by Tia Germanich, leading the Lancers to a 3-1 victory in Section 1-3A softball.

Maddie Kee earned the win for Deer Lakes (4-2, 1-0), giving up five hits and striking out 15. Abby DeJidas, who went 3 for 4, led off the game with a solo home run for Freeport (3-2, 0-1). Selker struck out 13.

Penn-Trafford 11, Armstrong 3 – Lorryn Sepe went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs and Allison Pokrant went 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs to lead Penn-Trafford (3-2, 1-0) to a Section 2-5A win. Taylor Noel doubled and drove in three runs and Erin Drotos and Giuliana Youngo each singled and doubled for the Warriors. Isabel Prazenica doubled, homered and drove in three for Armstrong (3-1, 0-1).

Western Beaver 13, Mars 0 – Emma Bogacki threw a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and went 3 for 4 with a double and six RBIs to lift Western Beaver (2-0, 1-0) to a Section 3-5A win. Kaitlyn Zele went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Maddie Syka and Shaylyn Shall each had two hits for the Golden Beavers. Taylor Schmitt doubled for Mars (1-6, 0-1).

Boys lacrosse

Mars 17, Upper St. Clair 9 – Enzo Grieco had eight goals and two assists and Ryan Blake added eight goals and an assist to lead Mars to a nonsection win.

Girls lacrosse

Pine-Richland 18, Butler 0 – Cate Gentile had five goals and three assists and five other Pine-Richland players scored two goals apiece in a Section 2-3A win. Two-goal scorers were Bridget Gilardi, Madeline Mill, Taylor Wilkinson, Kendyll Jerry and Mallory Boivin.

Boys tennis

Section 2-3A – Top seed Advaita Sircar won an all-North Allegheny final when he defeated teammate Evan Kaufman, who retired down 2-1 in the second set after dropping the first set, 6-2. North Hill’s Josh Kim outlasted Seneca Valley’s Michael deVyver, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the third-place match. The top four finishers make the WPIAL field in Class 3A.
