High school roundup for April 5, 2019: South Park edges Belle Vernon

David Monaco’s two-out single in the sixth inning plated the lone run of the game as South Park edged Belle Vernon, 1-0, in a Section 3-4A baseball game Friday night.

Brenden Gray allowed six hits and struck out 10 batters in 6 1/3 innings to earn the victory for the Eagles (5-2, 1-1). Cole Naylor allowed five hits and had six strikeouts for Belle Vernon (1-2, 1-1).

Canon-McMillan 6, Mt. Lebanon 5 — Casey Burke knocked in a pair of runs, and Noah Burke doubled in another as Canon-McMillan (5-2, 2-0) won in Section 3-6A. Brycen Virgilli had a double and triple in the win.

Trinity 10, Carrick 3 — Michael Parrish had a two-run single, and Brandon Robaugh had three RBIs, as Trinity (6-3, 2-0) won a Section 3-5A game.

Blackhawk 14, Ambridge 1 (5 inn.) — Mikey Hixenbaugh doubled, tripled and had three RBIs as No. 4 Blackhawk (4-2, 2-0) won in Section 2-4A.

Ringgold 10, West Mifflin 3 — Dylan Wuycik had three RBIs, and Bob Boyer knocked in two runs with a double as No. 3 Ringgold (3-2, 2-0) won a Section 3-4A game.

Chartiers-Houston 4, Frazier 0 — Josh Colletti had two RBIs, and Dustin Weiser tossed a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Chartiers-Houston (2-2, 2-0) won in Section 1-2A.

OLSH 12, Carlynton 3 — Robert Brazell doubled twice to help OLSH (6-1, 1-0) win a Section 4-2A game.

Seton LaSalle 8, Bishop Canevin 6 — Cam Colwell had two RBIs, and Drew Lafferty, Nic Vari and Brett Wagner also plated runs as Seton LaSalle (5-1) won a nonsection contest.

Thomas Jefferson 11, McKeesport 1 (6 inn.) — Andy Kalup was 3 for 3 with an RBI, and Noah Pierce and Thomas Dascenzo each had two RBIs as Thomas Jefferson (4-2) won a nonsection game.

Monessen 9, Avella 0 — In Section 2-A, Jeremiah Quattro had a two-run single and three RBIs to help Monessen (2-2, 1-1) earn a victory.

Jack Sacco and Nathan Lynch also had RBIs.

Laurel Highlands 12, Latrobe 2 (5 inn.) — Santino Marra and Nick Kumor had extra-base hits to help Laurel Highlands (4-0) win a nonsection matchup.

Ben Rafferty doubled for the Wildcats (4-3).

Ligonier Valley 9, Greensburg Central Catholic 1 — Clark Harr had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs to help Ligonier Valley (6-0) win a nonsection game. John Caldwell and Ethan Boring also had two hits. Boring tossed a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Tom Salley, Paul Rice and Ben LaCarte had singles for GCC (1-4).

Penn-Trafford 10, Gateway 3 — Anthony Sherwin had two RBIs, and Mario Disso, Connor Bannias and Cole DeFillippo all knocked in runs as Penn-Trafford (7-0) won a nonsection game.

Jordan Stancovich was 3 for 4 for Gateway (5-2).

Kiski Area 8, Indiana 0Ryan Rametta tossed a two-hitter, using just 61 pitches, to pace Kiski Area (2-3) in a nonsection win over Indiana (0-6). Billy Perroz singled, doubled and drove in three runs for the Cavaliers, and Zach Morrill singled three times. Matt Skelly and Ross Ziemianski had a double apiece.

Burrell 4, South Allegheny 0Tanner Spohn came up unhittable.

The Burrell junior southpaw pitched a no-hitter, leading No. 3 Burrell to a 4-0 victory over Section 1-3A opponent South Allegheny.

Spohn struck out four and walked five in seven innings to give the Bucs (3-1, 1-1) their first section victory. Seth Fischbach doubled and drove in a run.

Steel Valley 10, Freeport 4 — The Ironmen put five runs on the board in the first inning and four more in the fourth, rolling to a Section 1-3A win over rival No. 2 Freeport. Jarrett Heilman singled, doubled and knocked in two runs and Josh Tirdel doubled and added an RBI for Freeport (4-2, 1-1). Andre Good led Steel Valley (3-4, 1-1) with two singles, a double and three RBIs.

Shaler 2, Plum 1 — Anthony Frazetta and Evan Sante had a double apiece for Plum (3-4) in a nonsection loss. Will Jamison singled twice and drove in a run for the Titans (5-2). Tallon Auth singled in a run in the fifth inning for the Mustangs.

Softball

Chartiers-Houston 17, North Catholic 0 (3 inn.) — Kaci Alderson and Lauren Lober each homered and had five RBIs as Class 2A No. 1 Chartiers-Houston (7-1) won a nonsection game. Ella Brookman was 4 for 4 with three doubles, a home run and two RBIs and threw a two-hitter.

West Greene 5, Carmichaels 1 — Madison Lampe was 4 for 4 with two doubles as Class A No. 1 West Greene (5-3) won a nonsection game.

Southmoreland 12, Laurel Highlands 1 — The Scotties blasted five home runs en route to a nonsection win.

Faith Miller was 3 for 3 with two homers, a double and three RBIs. Jess Matheny smacked a grand slam, and Charity Henderson and Lexi Klatt also hit two-run homers for the defending WPIAL champion Scotties (2-1).

Matheny allowed one hit and struck out four in the five-inning victory.

Belle Vernon 4, Waynesburg 0 — Sophia Godzack and Lindsay Steeber homered to help Belle Vernon (3-5) win a nonsection game. Vanessa Porter tossed a two-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Leopards.

Plum 4, Greensburg Salem 2 — The Mustangs put up four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull off a come-from-behind win over nonsection rival Greensburg Salem. Pitcher Melanie Mienke gave up four hits through seven innings to pick up the win for Plum (5-0).

Jillian Durst went 4 for 4, including a double, and Gabby Fischetti and Abbey Froehlich each doubled for the Mustangs. Sydney Tressler doubled, and Rena Caruso took the loss for Greensburg Salem (2-3).

Fox Chapel 7, Moon 2 — Amelia Herzer hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Mackenzie Borkovich pitched a complete game with six strikeouts for Fox Chapel (1-4) in a nonsection win. Jess Klein doubled for the Foxes. Olivia Logan doubled for Moon (3-2).

Springdale 13, Northgate 3 — Brianna Thompson had four hits, including a pair of triples and Alexis Hrivnak pitched a complete game with 17 strikeouts to lead Springdale (5-0) to a nonsection win over Northgate (1-4). Thompson drove in three runs. Autumn Sprouse and Natalie Woitas singled three times and had two RBIs apiece.
