High school roundup for April 24, 2019: No. 2 North Allegheny edges No. 3 Norwin

No. 2-ranked North Allegheny scored five runs in the first inning en route to a 7-4 victory over No. 3 Norwin in a Section 2-6A softball game Wednesday evening.

Lauren Haywood knocked in three runs, and Regan Brodine had two RBIs for the Tigers (11-3, 9-2).

Alexandra Brentzel had two RBIs for Norwin (8-4, 7-3).

Bethel Park 12, Mt. Lebanon 2 (5 inn.) — Lauren Caye had three hits, including a triple, as No. 1 Bethel Park (10-0, 10-0) rolled to a Section 1-6A win. Seven players had an extra-base hit for the Black Hawks.

Montour 8, Western Beaver 2 — Lindsey Penz was 3 for 5 with two home runs and five RBIs as Montour (7-5, 7-3) won in Section 3-5A.

Vincentian Academy 4, Serra Catholic 1 — Sydney Calderaro was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Hannah Calderaro was 3 for 4 with two doubles as No. 3 Vincentian Academy (9-0, 8-0) won in Section 2-2A.

West Greene 13, Jefferson-Morgan 0 (5 inn.) — Jade Renner tossed a no-hitter and had two RBIs as No. 1 West Greene (11-3, 7-0) won in Section 2-A. Madison Lampe knocked in four runs, and McKenna Lampe and Kaitlyn Rizor each had three hits and two RBIs.

Mt. Pleasant 10, Greensburg Salem 0 (6 inn.) — Carolyn Alincic threw a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts as No. 1 Mt. Pleasant (11-0, 7-0) won a Section 1-4A game. Hannah Gnibus had a home run and three RBIs, Mary Smithnosky was 3 for 3 with a triple and an RBI, Haylie Brunson had two hits, including a triple and two RBIs, and Autumn Shogan knocked in three runs for the Vikings.

Nikki Mellinger had a hit for Greensburg Salem (4-8, 2-5).

Yough 5, Indiana 2 — In Section 1-4A, Sammie McGhee was 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs for No. 2 Yough (9-4, 6-1). Hannah Christner was 3 for 3, and Kierra Waywood threw a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Burrell 15, Derry 5 (5 inn.) — Class 3A No. 3 Burrell had 15 hits, including five extra-base hits, on its way to a Section 1 win over Derry (3-8, 3-5). Sarah Clark had three hits, including a double, and four RBIs for the Bucs (8-2, 6-1), and Cara Fiore singled twice and tripled. Kam Kelly hit a three-run homer, and Carissa Bateman had a two-run homer for Derry.

Monessen 7, Avella 4 — Mattie Telegraphis homered, and Hannah Yorty had two RBIs as Monessen (2-8, 2-5) won in Section 2-A. Yorty threw a six-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Leechburg 21, Jeannette 2 (5 inn.) — No. 2 Leechburg (9-0, 7-0) scored eight runs in the fifth inning to secure a Section 3A win. Taylor-Lynn Finken doubled in two runs for Jeannette (6-3, 5-3).

Ligonier Valley 6, West Shamokin 3 — Myrna Breegle knocked in two runs to help Ligonier Valley (10-0, 8-0) win a District 6 Heritage Conference game. Jane Garver threw a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts.

Knoch 15, Blackhawk 4 (5 inn.) — Class 4A No 3 Knoch (9-0, 7-0) scored a dozen runs in the first inning and rolled to a Section 3 win over Blackhawk (1-9, 0-7). Erin Luffy doubled and homered for the Knights. Quinn Hughes and Brynnae Coe doubled. Bailey Rickenbrode, Monica Gourley and Sophie Brandon singled two times each.

Baseball

Gateway 6, Penn Hills 5 — Troy Caggiano had three hits, and Ethan Frenchik knocked in two runs as Gateway (10-4, 7-1) won in Section 1-5A.

Obama Academy 2, Quaker Valley 1 — Antonio Mitchell went 2 for 3 with an RBI to help Obama Academy (4-4, 3-4) win in Section 2-4A.

Ellwood City 4, Shady Side Academy 2 — Ryan Gibbons allowed three hits and had eight strikeouts over five innings to help Ellwood City (4-7, 3-4) win a Section 2-3A game.

Quigley Catholic 1, Cornell 0 — Alex Tomsic threw a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts as Quigley Catholic (5-5, 4-1) won in Section 1-A.

Hempfield 5, Plum 0 — Hunter Eperesi and Reed Hipps knocked in two runs each to help Hempfield win a Section 2-6A game.

Shane Stuchell allowed three hits and had one strikeout through six innings to earn the victory for the Spartans (7-8, 2-4).

Gino Marra struck out seven in four innings but took the loss for Plum (6-9, 2-4).

Penn-Trafford 3, Connellsville 0 — MacLean Maund earned a victory as No. 2 Penn-Trafford (12-1, 5-1) won in Section 2-6A.

Franklin Regional 11, Armstrong 8 — Andrew Muraco was 4 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Jake Williams had a double, two triples and two RBIs as No. 2 Franklin Regional (10-1, 7-0) won a Section 1-5A game. Bryce Harper and Matthew Fitzmaurice also knocked in two runs each.

Greensburg Salem 6, Highlands 2 — Aaren Putt threw a six-hitter with four strikeouts over five innings, and Reid Admundson doubled as No. 4 Greensburg Salem (9-2, 5-2) won a Section 1-4A game.

Trent Bielak singled and drove in two runs for Highlands (8-6, 4-4).

Yough 15, Indiana 5 (5 inn.) — Caden Kastronis doubled, tripled and had six RBIs, and Steve Manon knocked in four runs as No. 2 Yough (8-4, 6-1) won in Section 1-4A. Ray Halahurich was 3 for 3 in the win.

Norwin 10, West Allegheny 3 — Ronnie Kachman allowed two hits over five scoreless innings to lead Norwin (8-4) to a nonsection victory. The Knights scored four runs in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

Deer Lakes 10, South Allegheny 0 (6 inn.) — Jake Yaconis had two singles and three RBIs in No. 2 Deer Lakes’ Section 1-3A win over South Allegheny (2-9, 1-6). Cory Newman had two singles and an RBI. Josh Probst had a two-run double, and Greg Geis struck out eight to pick up the win for Deer Lakes (7-3, 7-0).

Valley 10, Springdale 2 — Shane Demharter tripled and drove in three runs as Valley won a nonsection game. Evan Henry tripled and had two RBIs, and Matteo Vergerio doubled and had two RBIs for Valley (3-9). Brandon John doubled, and Isaac Kern had an RBI single for Springdale (1-9).

Track and field

Section 7-AA championships — Several athletes came away with multiple victories at the Allegheny Interscholastic Conference Invitational track and field meet at Freeport. The event involved the seven teams of Section 7-AA: Freeport, Burrell, Leechburg, Deer Lakes, Valley, North Catholic and Apollo-Ridge.

Deer Lakes’ Josh Yourish ran to victory in the boys 800-meter run and 1,600 run and was a part of the Lancers’ winning 3,200 relay. Apollo-Ridge’s Michael Booker claimed the 100 dash and the triple jump, Deer Lakes’ Maxx Hammond won the 3,200 run and shot put, and Freeport’s Conor Selinger was best in the 110 and 300 hurdles.

On the girls’ side, Burrell’s Kaylen Sharrow scored wins in the 100 and 300 hurdles and anchored the 1,600 relay to victory, and Freeport’s Sidney Shemanski was first in the 400 and 800. Deer Lakes’ Kelli Galbraith won the long and triple jumps, and teammate Mackenzie Spence finished first in the shot put and discus.
