High school roundup for April 13, 2024: Mt. Lebanon baseball rallies past Central Catholic

Sawyer Klasnick doubled home two runs in the top of the seventh inning to propel Mt. Lebanon to a 2-1 victory over Central Catholic in Section 2-6A baseball Saturday.

Weston Airey picked up the win in relief for the Blue Devils (7-3, 4-2), striking out seven over four innings, and went 2 for 2 at the plate with a double and a run scored. Liam Pekarsky pitched five scoreless innings for the Vikings (4-6, 1-5), giving up just one hit.

Hempfield 13, Baldwin 1 – In six innings, Dylan Firmstone went 5 for 5 with a home run and five RBIs to lead Hempfield (10-0, 6-0) to a Section 2-6A win over Baldwin (1-8, 0-5). Carson Shuglie added a home run and three RBIs, Quinn Wilkins doubled twice and drove in three runs, and Colin Polechko went 3 for 4. Chase Sikorski picked up the complete-game win, allowing six hits while striking out five.

Hopewell 5, Blackhawk 0 – David Medich struck out 11 over six shutout innings to lead Hopewell (6-3, 3-1) to a Section 1-4A win. Kingston Krotec singled twice, had an RBI and stole four bases for the Vikings. Loghan Elich singled twice for Blackhawk (2-3, 2-2).

Indiana 10, Kiski Area 0; Kiski Area 2, Indiana 1 – The Little Indians (5-2, 3-1) and Cavaliers (5-3, 2-2) split a Section 4-4A doubleheader. In Game 1, Ben Ryan hit a two-run homer in the second inning and had three RBIs to help Indiana win in five innings. Trevor Smith had three hits, including two doubles and an RBI and Andrew McGee had an RBI triple. In Game 2, Jake Smith pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts and did not allow an earned run for the Cavaliers and Blake Fritz singled twice. Ryan, Kadin Homer and Tim Burch doubled for Indiana.

Montour 12, Ambridge 4; Montour 4, Ambridge – Montour (7-1, 4-0) swept Ambridge (1-5, 0-4) in a Section 1-4A doubleheader. In Game 1, Jake Robinson doubled, homered and drove in four runs. Jonathan Cecil tripled and Joshua Peremba doubled for the Spartans. Naz Thompson singled twice for the Bridgers.

In Game 2, Brady Vershum, Oliver Wovchko and Jake Robinson combined to pitch a shutout. Peremba had an RBI triple and Jason George drove in two with a single as part of a four-run bottom of the fourth. Joey Pugh and Nick Thomas doubled for the Bridgers.

North Allegheny 6, Butler 1 – In Section 1-6A, Owen Schall went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base as North Allegheny (6-0, 3-0) defeated Butler (3-6, 1-5). North Allegheny stole six bases overall. Charles Mau recorded the win, giving up three hits and one run while striking out six over four innings. Andrew Lucas drove in Butler’s only run.

Norwin 9, Canon-McMillan 5 – Norwin (5-4, 3-2) used a six-run top of the fifth to take control en route to a Section 2-6A win. Nate Silberman went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs for the Knights and William Griffiths singled and drove in a pair. Sam Meredith singled twice, doubled and had an RBI for Canon-McMillan (3-5, 3-3).

Sewickley Academy 14, Monessen 4 – Nolan Donnelly went 2 for 2 with two doubles and two RBIs as Sewickley Academy (2-4, 2-2) collected six two-base hits in its Section 3-A five-inning win. Jordan Smith went 2 for 2 and scored three runs for Sewickley Academy. R.J. DiEugenio went 3 for 3 with a double and a solo homer for Monessen (0-7, 0-4) while teammate Josh Walters also went 3 for 3.

Waynesburg 4, Brownsville 3 – Derek Turcheck hit a walk-off double to lift Waynesburg (5-0, 4-0) to a Section 4-3A win. Turcheck went 3 for 4 and had a pair of RBIs. Brownsville (0-5, 0-5) scored three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game. Harlan Davis doubled, tripled and plated two runs for the Falcons.

Softball

Belle Vernon 12, Greensburg Salem 11 – Mia Zubovic, Gracie Sokol, Mailey Hayes and Katie Sokol all had three hits as Belle Vernon (8-1, 3-1) outslugged Greensburg Salem (2-6, 0-3) in a Section 2-4A game. Zubovic drove in three runs. Patty Redinger had three hits and three RBIs for Greensburg Salem while Alle Scarpa added a solo homer and two doubles.

Union 18, New Castle 12 – Olivia Williams went 2 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs as Union (5-0) beat New Castle (1-4) in nonsection play. Olivia Benedict went 3 for 5 with a double, triple and two RBIs while Tori May went 3 for 3 with a double and drove in two runs. Olivia Hood went 2 for 3 with a double and five RBIs for New Castle.

Bill Wilt Memorial – Derry junior Sophia Mazonni had a great day in the field, sweeping the girls discus, shot put and javelin at the invitational held at United.

Jane Huss took home the girls 800 meter run for the Trojans and Stanley Rajkovich won the boys triple jump. Rajkovich was the runner-up in the high jump and third in the long jump.

Three Derry girls scored runner-up finishes Julia Mucci (400), Julia Omlor (100) and Regina Taylor (100 hurdles). Aiden Piper took second in the boys shot put.

Ligonier Valley’s John Jablunovsky won the boys high jump.

TSTCA Championships – The South Fayette girls dominated the sprints and hurdles at the annual meet at West Mifflin. Olivia Renk won the 100 and 200 and Delaney Schumaker won the 100 and 300 hurdles.

The Mt. Lebanon girls won the 400 and 1,600 relays. North Catholic took the 3,200 relay and Daphne Fierl won the long jump.

Other WPIAL winners on the girls side were Artemis Conaboy of Bethel Park (400), Grace Senneway of Peters Township (3,200), Jocie Slesinski of Butler (high jump) and Brooklyn Lucas of Baldwin (shot put).

South Fayette also fared well on the boys side with Alaa-Eddine Guetari winning the 800 and Michael Gimigliano winning the 300 hurdles.

New Castle and Pine-Richland found success in the field events. New Castle’s Jaden Kirkwood won the discus and shot put and Kyrell Harris won the triple jump.

Pine-Richland got wins from Emery Moye in the high jump and Ryan Beam in the javelin.

Other boys WPIAL winners were Connor Stokes of Elizabeth Forward (100), Landon Lacey of Butler (200), Achan Green of Penn Hills (110 hurdles) and Marcus Toto of Baldwin (long jump) and Mt. Lebanon in the 400 relay and Moon in the 3,200 relay.
