High school roundup for April 13, 2018: North Hills baseball topples No. 1 Mars

Joey Pusateri threw a five-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead North Hills to a 4-1 win over No. 1 Mars in a Section 1-5A baseball game Friday afternoon.

It was the Indians' fifth section win in five days.

Garrett Barto was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and Jordan Pitchford was 3 for 4. Steve Miller 2 for 3 with a two-run single for North Hills (9-1, 5-0).

No. 1 Mars fell to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in section play.

Seneca Valley 7, Pine-Richland 6 — Mark Trotta homered and had two RBIs, and Cory Greiner also knocked in two runs as Seneca Valley (4-4, 1-2) won in Section 1-6A. Matt Wood homered and had three RBIs for No. 1 Pine-Richland (6-2, 1-2).

Hempfield 10, Plum 6 — Isaiah DiAndreth was 3 for 4 with two doubles and a triple to add as Hempfield earned a victory in a Section 2-6A game.

Traynor Granatire went 3 for 3 with a double for the Spartans (6-1, 3-0), who belted 13 hits. Tanner Froelich homered for Plum (5-3, 1-2).

Norwin 11, Penn Hills 1 (5 inn.) — Billy Kerston threw a complete-game five-hitter as No. 4 Norwin (3-2, 2-1) earned a win in Section 2-6A.

Owen Sabol and Brady Sigut each were 2 for 3 with a double, and Christian Kubacka had three RBIs for the Knights. Anthony Tucci homered for Penn Hills (1-3, 0-3).

Penn-Trafford 7, Connellsville 0 — Zach Mancz was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and Anthony Sherwin had a two-run single to help Penn-Trafford (4-3, 2-1) win in Section 2-6A. Christian Pfrogner earned the win.

Canon-McMillan 7, Allderdice 5 — Cam Weston had a home run and three RBIs, and Greydon Piechnick was 2 for 4 with two RBIs as No. 5 Canon-McMillan (6-2, 3-1) won in Section 3-6A.

Mt. Lebanon 7, Bethel Park 3 — Alex Zigarovich was 3 for 4 and Finn Dugan had two hits and two RBIs as Mt. Lebanon (4-5, 3-1) won in Section 3-6A.

Chartiers Valley 15, Trinity 8 — Zack Philossoph was 3 for 6 with a double, home run and two RBIs to lift Chartiers Valley (3-2, 3-1) to a Section 2-5A win. Jake Lindow hit a three-run homer for the Colts.

Laurel Highlands 15, Latrobe 1 (5 inn.) — Laurel Highlands (4-0, 4-0) scored 15 runs in the fourth inning in a Section 3-5A victory. Josh Burns was 2 for 4 with five RBIs for the Mustangs. Griffin Clark had an RBI single for Latrobe (3-3, 2-2).

Fox Chapel 5, Kiski Area 4 (8 inn.) — Andrew Auth scored the winning run on a passed ball in the eighth to give Fox Chapel a Section 1-5A victory over Kiski Area (0-3, 0-4). Ryan Wagner picked up the win for the Foxes (4-1, 3-0) after striking out two over four scoreless innings. Billy Peroz had three hits and two RBIs for Kiski.

Franklin Regional 8, McKeesport 4 — Andrew Muraco was 2 for 5 with three RBIs, and Shane Sciorilli was 3 for 4 with an RBI as Franklin Regional (5-2, 3-1) won in Section 3-5A.

Greensburg Salem 10, Deer Lakes 3 — Matt Wicker went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs for Greensburg Salem (4-3, 3-2) in a Section 1-4A win. Will Meyer and Cory Slagel had RBI singles for Deer Lakes (4-4, 1-3).

Highlands 5, Derry 4 — Josh Stuckley hit a walk-off single in the seventh inning to give Highlands a dramatic Section 1-4A victory over Derry (1-3, 1-4). Zac Kuniak had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs for the Golden Rams (2-3).

Freeport 12, Yough 1 — Jarrett Hileman pitched 4 23 innings, allowing one run and had a pair of doubles to lead Freeport (5-0, 5-0) to a Section 1-4A win at Yough (2-2, 2-2). The Yellowjackets had 14 hits, including three apiece from Brodey Cowan and Matt Charlton.

Blackhawk 11, Central Valley 0 (5 inn.) — Mike Turconi tossed a five-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts as No. 1 Blackhawk (6-0, 5-0) won in Section 2-4A. Marco Borello was 2 for 2 with two doubles and four RBIs, and Jarrett Wright was 2 for 2 with three RBIs.

New Castle 9, Hopewell 0 — Mark Torsello threw a one-hitter, and Anthony Cioffi and Bobby Salem each had three hits to guide New Castle (1-4, 1-3) to a Section 2-4A win.

West Mifflin 3, Belle Vernon 2 (9 inn.) — Dylan Cannon hit a walk-off single in the ninth inning as West Mifflin (6-2, 3-1) won in Section 3-4A. Jake Rathway was 3 for 4, and Josh Hoffman hit an RBI triple for Belle Vernon (3-1, 3-1).

Steel Valley 5, Burrell 1 — The No. 2 Ironmen (3-3, 2-1) handed the No. 5 Bucs (3-1, 2-1) their first loss in a Section 1-3A contest. Nick Harhai pitched the first six innings and struck out seven. Rau Chuba reached base three times, scored three runs and made three solid plays in the field. Zach Miller had three hits and drove in the only Burrell run.

Valley 9, South Allegheny 0 — Cayden Quinn pitched a one-hitter and struck out 11 to lead Valley (5-2, 3-0) to a Section 1-3A win over South Allegheny (0-3, 0-3). Dan Antonacci went 3 for 3 with four RBIs.

Riverside 11, Ellwood City 1 (6 inn.) — Gunnar Boehm hit a grand slam in the fourth inning as No. 1 Riverside (5-1, 5-0) won in Section 2-3A. Danny Fox threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Apollo-Ridge 7, Bishop Canevin 5 — Daniel Rametta had two hits, including a triple, to help Apollo-Ridge capture a Section 3-2A victory over Bishop Canevin (3-2, 3-2). T.J. Stiffy was the winning pitcher for the Vikings (2-1, 2-1) and struck out four over 5 23 innings.

Leechburg 14, St. Joseph 4 — John Soriso had three hits and five RBIs and struck out five while picking up the win on the mound as Leechburg captured a Section 1-A victory over St. Joseph (0-4, 0-2). Tyler Leech also had two hits and four RBIs, and Corey Kerecz had three hits and three RBIs for Leechburg (1-3, 1-2).

Monessen 16, Mapletown 0 (4 inn.) — Tyler Caterino tossed a no-hitter to lift Monessen (3-2, 2-1) to a win in Section 2-A. Nick Baker was 2 for 2 with four RBIs, and Cory Fleming was 4 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.

Quigley Catholic 17, Clairton (4 inn.) — JT Vukovcan threw a no-hitter as Quigley Catholic (4-1, 3-0) won in Section 3-A. Jonathan Jansma was 3 for 3, and Alex Tomsit knocked in three runs.

Softball

Fox Chapel 15, Allderdice 2 (5 inn.) — Fox Chapel plated 10 runs in the third inning en route to a Section 2-6A win at Allderdice (0-5, 0-5). Grace Katz, Eva Speacht, and Caitlin Hudic had a double apiece for the Foxes (3-3, 2-3).

Seneca Valley 10, Butler 0 (6 inn.) — Madison Hans hit a three-run home run, and Karli Hacker had four RBIs to help No. 4 Seneca Valley (4-3, 3-2) win in Section 3-6A. Claire Zimmerman tossed a one-hitter.

Franklin Regional 1, Plum 0 (8 inn.) — Crissey Kemerer hit a home run in the eighth inning to propel Franklin Regional (7-1, 5-0) to a Section 1-5A win. Angalee Beall threw a four-hitter to earn the shutout win. Abbey Froehlich took the loss for Plum (4-2, 3-2).

Gateway 9, Woodland Hills 0 — Maura Ryan was 3 for 4 with a triple and also threw a four-hitter with four strikeouts to lead Gateway (3-2, 3-2) to a win in Section 1-5A. Sydney Hunter and Gionna DeLuca were each 3 for 4.

Kiski Area 10, Armstrong 0 (5 inn.) — Kelsey Sofaly and Alexa Nagy doubled for Kiski Area (1-3, 1-3) in a Section 1-5A win over Armstrong (0-5, 0-4). The Cavaliers scored four runs in the third and five in the fourth to break the game open.

Penn-Trafford 13, Greensburg Salem 3 — Brooke Cleland was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Emma Nedley was 2 for 5 with three RBIs as Penn-Trafford (5-1, 5-0) won in Section 1-5A.

Tiffany Bruzda was 2 for 3 for Greensburg Salem (2-5, 1-4).

Moon 20, Montour 3 — In Section 3-5A, Morgan Toal was 6 for 6 with three doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs to lead No. 2 Moon (4-2, 4-1) to victory. Lauren Protch had five hits for the Tigers.

West Allegheny 10, Chartiers Valley 0 — Coach Mindi McFate earned her 200th win as No. 1 West Allegheny (8-1, 3-0) won in Section 3-5A. Taylor Cummings had two doubles and three RBIs.

Indiana 5, Derry 2 — Lauren Bertig threw a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts, and Sara Zimmerman was 2 for 3 with a triple to help Indiana (4-1, 3-1) win in Section 1-4A. Kam Kelly hit a solo home run for Derry (1-4, 0-3).

Mt. Pleasant 15, Uniontown 0 (3 inn.) — Chloe Poulich was 3 for 3 with a home run and six RBIs to guide No. 1 Mt. Pleasant (5-0, 4-0) to a Section 1-4A win. Meadow Uncapher threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts, and Ava Gnibus was 3 for 3 for the Vikings.

Elizabeth Forward 3, West Mifflin 2 — Taylor Ludwick hit two doubles, and Kailey Larcinese threw a four-hitter as No. 3 Elizabeth Forward (8-1, 4-1) won in Section 2-4A.

Burrell 11, Valley 0 (6 inn.) — Brittany Dunn tossed a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts and went 4 for 4 with a home run as Burrell won in Section 1-3A.

Cara Fiore and Kayla Santucci doubled twice for Burrell (3-2, 2-1), and Maia Ferra doubled and had three RBIs.

South Park 12, Southmoreland 7 — Kaitlin Morrison was 4 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs as No. 1 South Park (4-0, 4-0) won in Section 3-3A. Charity Henderson was 3 for 3 with three RBIs, and Jess Matheny was 3 for 4 for Southmoreland (3-3, 3-2).

Seton LaSalle 5, Brentwood 4 — Lexi Wagner was 3 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs, and Jada Simon was 2 for 2 with a homer to lift Seton LaSalle (5-1, 3-0) to a Section 1-2A win. Simon struck out eight to earn the win.

Apollo-Ridge 20, Greensburg Central Catholic 1 (3 inn.) — Mollie Charlton was 4 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBIs as Apollo-Ridge (2-2, 2-1) rolled to a three-inning victory at Greensburg Central Catholic (0-2, 0-2) in Section 2-2A.

Kiersten Zimmerman was 3 for 3 with two RBIs, and Sierra Barr added two doubles and three RBIs.

Laurel 11, Neshannock 4 — Mackenzie Latess was 4 for 5 with three doubles and three RBIs to help Laurel (3-1, 3-1) win in Section 4-2A.

Monessen 13, California 0 (5 inn.) — Dana Vatakis threw a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts as No. 2 Monessen (5-1, 4-1) won in Section 2-A. She also went 2 for 3 with a double, triple and three RBIs. Destiny Habeck had two doubles and four RBIs in the win.

Jeannette 18, Geibel 0 — Faith Johnston scattered four hits and struck out 10 batters for Jeannette (2-3, 2-3) in a Section 3-A win.

Leechburg 10, St. Joseph 0 (6 inn.) — Morgan Pierce pitched a one-hitter and Daesha Knight and Gracie Reinke both hit two-run homers in the fourth inning for Class A No. 3 Leechburg (7-1, 6-0) in a Section 3 win. Pierce struck out four and did not walk a batter. Anna Swierczewski singled for St. Joseph (3-1, 2-1).

Riverview 14, Ellis School 3 (5 inn.) — Katelyn Davis had three hits, including a homer and four RBIs, for Riverview (3-2, 3-2) in a Section 3-A win over Ellis School (0-4, 0-4). Alyssa Cappa went 4 for 4 with a double and a triple and struck out eight over five innings to earn the win. Mikayla Collins was 2 for 2 with a double.

Ligonier Valley 4, Punxsutawney 1 — Lexie Petrof was 3 for 3 with a home run, and Jane Garver was 2 for 4 with an RBI as Ligonier Valley (6-0) won a nonconference game. Garver struck out seven and threw a one-hitter to earn the win.

Boys tennis

Franklin Regional 5, Latrobe 0 — Anup Nadesan, Advait Kulkarni and Everest Yan won singles matches to give Franklin Regional (8-0) a Section 1-AAA win. The Panthers captured the section title and will host a first-round match next week when the WPIAL playoffs begin.
