High school notebook: Hempfield’s Podkul commits to Grove City

Hempfield senior Allison Podkul decided to continue her basketball career at Grove City.

Podkul, a 5-foot-8 guard, averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals this season for the Spartans.

She also considered Westminster, Pitt-Greensburg and Washington & Jefferson.

Scholar-athletes

The WPIAL announced its annual scholar-athlete winners. The 21 winners will receive $1,000 scholarships.

Among the winners is Yough senior Hannah Bach, a Pitt softball recruit.

Net news

Two local players were named Western PA Volleyball Coaches Association Players of the Week: Derry senior libero Jake Griffin (Class AA) and Norwin junior outside hitter Jake Williams (AAA).

As far as this week's rankings, Penn-Trafford, Hempfield and Norwin are Nos. 4, 5 and 6, respectively, in Class AAA.

Derry is holding steady at No. 2 in Class AA.

Jeannette pair offered

Jeannette juniors Marcus Barnes and Anthony Johnson each received additional Division I football opportunities on Monday.

Barnes, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound receiver and defensive back, now has offers from all three major military academies after Navy offered. In addition to Air Force and Army West Point, he also has offers from Robert Morris and Howard.

Johnson (6-5, 220), who went from a first-year varsity player last season to a standout defensive end, picked up an offer from Syracuse. His other suitors include Robert Morris, Howard and Central Michigan.
