High school football roundup for Nov. 1, 2024: Kymon’e Brown helps Jeannette upset No. 4 Neshannock

Kymon’e Brown threw for 101 yards and ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns to lead 13th-seeded Jeannette to a 23-7 upset victory over No. 4 Neshannock (9-2) in a WPIAL Class A first-round matchup Friday night.
Quarterback Jino Mozzocio scored on a 15-yard run in the first quarter and Brown answered with an 18-yard scoring run in the second quarter to tie the score 7-7.
Momentum shifted to the Jayhawks on a Neshannock drive late in the second quarter. First, Mozzocio left the game with an injury after taking a hard hit. Then, the Jayhawks (7-3) made a goal-line stand to keep the score tied at the half.
Jayce Powell took the opening kickoff of the second half and raced 87 yards for a score to give the Jayhawks the lead for good.
Later in the third quarter, Brown took off on a 60-yard touchdown run to make it 21-7.
Jeannette added a safety when Neshannock backup quarterback Nico Medure was called for intentional grounding in the end zone in the fourth quarter.
Jeannette will face rival Greensburg Central Catholic, the fifth seed, in the quarterfinals next Friday. In the regular season, the Centurions beat the Jayhawks, 44-27, on Oct. 4.

Class 5A
Bethel Park 42, Latrobe 7 – Ja’Vaughn Moore ran for 142 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 5 Bethel Park (9-2) over No. 12 Latrobe (5-6) in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs. Tanner Pfeuffer threw for 178 yards and Ryan Petras caught six passes for 101 yards and rushed for two touchdowns for Bethel Park, which faces Woodland Hills in next week’s quarterfinals.
John Wetzel scored on a 39-yard punt return for Latrobe.
Class 4A
Aliquippa 34, Trinity 14 – Tiqwai Hayes ran for 176 yards and three touchdowns as No. 4 Aliquippa (7-2) defeated No. 5 Trinity (5-6) in the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals. Marques Council Jr. threw for 147 yards and two touchdowns for Aliquippa, which will face No. 1 Thomas Jefferson in next Friday’s semifinals. Jonah Williamson threw for 74 yards and one touchdown and ran for 108 yards and a touchdown for Trinity.
Class 2A
Riverside 29, OLSH 8 — Robert Janis ran for 164 yards and two touchdowns as No. 9 Riverside (6-5) defeated No. 8 Keystone Oaks (5-5) in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs. Aiday Gaydosz threw for 108 yards and a touchdown for Riverside while Vann Kavals tossed for 247 yards for OLSH. Riverside plays top seed Seton LaSalle in the quarterfinals next week.
Mohawk 35, Keystone Oaks 28 — Cash Stratton rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns, including the winning score on a 1-yard run with 1:36 left in the game, to lead No. 7 Mohawk (7-3) to the WPIAL Class 2A first round playoff win against No. 10 Keystone Oaks (4-6). Mohawk’s Bobby Fadden threw for 107 yards and two touchdowns and Blake Logan caught six passes for 94 yards and a touchdown with both Stratton and Logan adding interceptions on defense. Brenden Quarles threw two touchdown passes for Keystone Oaks. Mohawk will play No. 2 South Park in next Friday’s quarterfinals.
South Allegheny 53, Waynesburg Central 14 — In the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs, Drew Cook (four) and Cam Epps (three) combined for seven touchdowns as No. 6 South Allegheny (9-2) defeated No. 11 Waynesburg (6-5). Ryan Cortes threw four touchdown passes and ran for another. South Allegheny matches up against Ellwood City in the quarterfinals next week.
Steel Valley 49, Washington 28 — Donald Barksdale rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns as No. 4 Steel Valley (8-3) beat No. 13 Washington (5-6) in the WPIAL Class 2A first round playoff contest. Da’Ron Barksdale added 75 rushing yards and three touchdowns for Steel Valley. Trenton Grooms ran for 89 yards and a touchdown for Washington. Steel Valley will play the winner of Saturday’s Western Beaver/Carlynton game in next Friday’s quarterfinals.
Class A
Bishop Canevin 56, Bentworth 3 — Myontae Mott rushed for three touchdowns and Kyle Olszewski threw for 111 yards as No. 3 Bishop Canevin (8-2) downed No. 14 Bentworth (6-5) in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Bishop Canevin will face South Side in next week’s quarterfinals.
California 22, Laurel 6 — Lee Qualk ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 10 Laurel (8-3) to the WPIAL Class A first round playoff win at No. 7 Laurel (5-6). Luca Santini threw for 139 yards and a touchdown for Laurel. California will play Clairton in the quarterfinals next week.
Clairton 56, Rochester 0 — In the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs, Drahcir Jones ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns and scored on a 35-yard interception return as No. 2 Clairton (11-0) blanked No. 15 Rochester (3-7). Donte Wright caught two touchdown passes from Jeff Thompson and added a 29-yard scoring run for Clairton.
Fort Cherry 56, Brentwood 14 — Matt Sieg threw for 87 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 166 yards and one TD as No. 1 Fort Cherry (11-0) beat No. 16 Brentwood (4-7) in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Eli Salvini added 101 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just four carries for Fort Cherry, which led at halftime, 49-0. Fort Cherry faces Cornell in the quarterfinals next week.
South Side 39, Jefferson-Morgan 30 — AC Corfield rushed for 171 yards and two touchdowns as No. 11 South Side (7-3) jumped to a 27-6 halftime lead and held on to upset No. 6 Jefferson-Morgan (10-1) in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Houston Guseman threw for 116 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 76 yards for Jefferson-Morgan.
PIAA subregional
Hollidaysburg 41, Allderdice 8 — In the PIAA Class 5A Districts 6, 8, 9, 10 subregional, Hollidaysburg (10-1) defeated Allderdice (5-6). Hollidaysburg will play DuBois in the finals next Friday.
