Herald spotlight athlete: Shady Side Academy’s Melissa Riggins

Melissa Riggins, a freshman at Shady Side Academy, brought home three medals from the WPIAL track and field championships two weeks ago. She won the 800- and 1,600-meter races and anchored the winning 1,600 relay team.

She then won gold in the 800 and 1,600 at the PIAA championships May 26 at Shippensburg and helped the mile relay team to a fourth-place finish. She is also on the soccer team.

Here's a closer look at this week's Spotlight Athlete:

If you could trade places with anybody for a day, who would you choose?

Either soccer players Alex Morgan or Meghan Klingenberg.

What sport would you be playing if not track or soccer?

Tennis. I love playing.

At the beginning of track season, did you envision winning all of those gold medals as a freshman?

No. I know I've improved over the season, but I never thought I would do so well. I envisioned maybe qualifying for states.

What three words best describe you?

Perfectionist, humorous and compassionate.

What's your favorite vacation destination?

The Grand Canyon.

What's your favorite TV show?

I don't watch much television, but I like “Fixer Uppers” on HGTV.

Who would be your dream date?

Shawn Mendes.

What three people would you like to have dinner with?

George Washington, soccer player Julie Johnson and my grandmother.

What movie could you watch over and over?

“Nerve.”

Where would you like to go that you've never been before?

New Zealand.

What's your favorite cookout food?

Definitely ribs. I love ribs.

What three items have to be in your refrigerator?

Clementines, baby spinach salad and eggs.

Who would you like to see disappear from public view?

Justin Bieber. I'm not a fan.

Is there a food you refuse to eat?

Any seafood. I hate seafood.

People would be surprised to know that …

I love to dance even though I'm awful at it.
