Herald roundup: Shady Side Academy runners find success

In a multi-team boys cross country meet on Sept. 25, Shady Side Academy beat Deer Lakes, Burrell and Southmoreland but fell to Riverview, 18-41.

SSA’s Leo Lui finished fourth while teammates Adam Lauer and Brendan McLaughlin finished eighth and 10th respectively. The Indians are 7-1.

On the girls side, Shady Side improved to 8-1 after defeating Deer Lakes, Burrell and Southmoreland on Oct. 25. Riverview beat SSA, 22-36. SSA’s Emmie Lau finished first overall while Julianna Bem came in sixth.

Girls golf

Shady Side Academy girls golf beat Shaler, 211-218, on Sept. 25 as Catherine Jewart shot a 46 to pace SSA.

Girls tennis

Fox Chapel girls tennis swept Thomas Jefferson, 5-0, on Sept. 25 to improve to 11-2. In singles, Kristen Friday, Emily Fera and Katie Voight posted wins while the doubles teams of Lexi Quackenbush/Carissa Shepard and Baylin Bitar/Paige Theoret also won.

• In the Section 3-AAA doubles championships held at Shady Side Academy, SSA’s Ella Santora and Aya Youssef beat teammates Isha Reddy and Paige Golden, 6-4, 6-2, to claim the section title. Fox Chapel’s Shephard and Quackenbush advanced to the WPIAL tournament by defeating teammates Bitar and Voight, 6-0, 6-1.

• Shady Side Academy blanked Fox Chapel, 5-0, on Oct. 1. In singles, Elle Santora, Aya Youseff and Arianna Goitz posted straight set wins while the doubles pairs of Isha Reddy/Paige Golden and Renee Long/Avery Guyaux also recorded straight set wins.

Boys soccer

Shady Side Academy boys soccer dropped a 3-1 match to undefeated Deer Lakes on Sept. 26. Max Farner scored for SSA.

• In a Section 1-4A match on Sept. 25, Fox Chapel edged Shaler, 3-2, as Zane Ingram’s goal with five minutes left was the difference. Nate Lazzara and Jack Nury also scored for FC, with Ingram, Lazzara and Anthony Shin adding assists. Clayton Humbert made 12 saves in goal.

Boys golf

The WPIAL boys golf finals were held at Oakmont Country Club Oct. 2, with four Fox Chapel golfers advancing to the PIAA Western Regional. Scott Bitar shot a 72 followed by Gregor Meyer at 73, Aidan Oehrle with a 74 and Matt Mattioli at 75.

Girls soccer

Emma Wecht scored three goals and Britta Lagerquist added two as Fox Chapel improved to 4-6 overall and 3-5 in Section 1-4A with a 5-2 win over North Hills on Oct. 1. Julie Scheffler made three saves in goal.

• Shady Side Academy used goals from Krystyna Rytel and Sophia McMahon to blank Springdale, 2-0, in a Section 1-A matchup Oct. 1. Molly Skvorak had four saves in goal as the Indians improved to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in section play.

Hockey

Fox Chapel opened up PIHL North Division play Oct. 1 with a 9-2 loss to Montour. Mac Johnson and Michael Kilmer scored for the Foxes. Tyler Radigan made 41 saves and Noah Wedner had 13 for the Foxes.

Football

It was Homecoming Day at Shady Side Academy on Sept. 29, and Dino Tomlin and his teammates made sure the alumni had an enjoyable day. The Indians remained undefeated with a 63-21 rout of Apollo-Ridge as Tomlin scored five touchdowns, three of them in the first quarter on runs of 35, 14 and 16 yards. He also hauled in 35- and 66-yard TD passes from Skyy Moore. Moore added a 75-yard TD scamper and a two-point conversion run.

The Indians’ ground game accounted for 346 yards on 23 attempts with Alex Bellinotti leading the way with 87 yards on seven carries. Moore was 7 of 10 passing for 165 yards.

“We had a great team effort,” SSA coach Chuck DiNardo said. “We are focused on playing consistent, hard-nosed football for 48 minutes. We are learning to compete, but still have much to improve upon. I’m very proud of the efforts of our student-athletes, and it was great to get a win on homecoming in front of a packed house. We know we have much work to do ahead, and we must keep our mindset on improving every time that we step out on the field.”

Going camping

The Fox Chapel boys basketball fall boot camp will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 18, Nov. 1 and Nov. 8 at the high school gym. It is open to boys in grades 1-8.

The camp is led by Fox Chapel head coach Zach Skrinjar, along with current players and coaches. It features a combination of skill work, team drills and 5-on-5 games. Basketballs will be provided.

• Registration for the Fox Chapel Youth Wrestling program will be held online this year. Registration will open up on Oct. 15 and remain open through the first two weeks of the season. Visit www.leaguelineup.com/foxchapelyouthwrestling to register.

A registration fee of $125 is due at the first practice, is required and will be refundable within the first two weeks of the season. The fee covers the cost of uniforms, shirts, referees, league fees and liability insurance for the program. The cost of a second child in the program is reduced to $85 and $70 for a third child.

The first night of practice will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 5. Appropriate wrestling attire should be worn to all practices (shorts or sweatpants, t-shirt, wrestling shoes or socks). A photocopy of the child’s birth certificate must also be handed in within two weeks of the beginning of practice. Late registrations will be accepted until Dec. 1.

A required parent’s meeting will be held 5:50 p.m. Nov. 7, before practice.
