Herald roundup: Shady Side Academy girls lacrosse scores convincing victories

After opening the season with an 18-3 win over Latrobe on March 28, Shady Side Academy girls lacrosse rolled to four more wins.
The Indians pummeled Norwin, 20-3, on April 3, as Emmy Lau scored seven goals and had an assist. Coco Redican had three goals and four assists, Elizabeth Walsh and Abby Todd each added a pair of goals and a pair of assists, Alicia McLaughlin scored three times and Claire Taylor also scored. Riley DiFiore made five saves.
The Indians beat Penn-Trafford, 16-3, on April 5. Redican had four goals and three assists, while Lau and Walsh each contributed three goals and an assist. Todd pitched in with two goals and an assist, followed by Paige Golden with two goals, Cat Johnson with a goal and an assist and Taylor with a goal. DiFiore stopped four shots in goal.
SSA then defeated Indiana, 15-5, on April 6, with Johnson pacing the attack with four goals and Lau scoring three goals with two assists. Walsh and Todd each scored twice, with Josie Szlachetka scoring a goal and adding three assists, Redican and Golden each scored a goal and picked up an assist and Taylor also scored. DiFiore made six saves.
“We're working well as a team,” SSA coach Katy Phillips said. “Next Monday against Fox Chapel will be a good test to see where we are.”
Shady Side Academy cruised to an 18-0 win over Hempfield on April 11. Todd led the offense with four goals and an assist, followed by Taylor with three goals. Redican and Alicia McLaughlin each scored twice and picked up a pair of assists. Walsh had two goals and an assist, Paige Golden and Lau each had a goal and an assist and Josie Szlachetka scored a goal.
Fox Chapel girls lacrosse improved to 4-0 after overwhelming Norwin, 19-2, on April 9. Kate Goodwin led the way with nine goals and an assist.
Mary Ellis added a goal and five assists, followed by Sloan Rost with three goals and an assist, Margeaux Essey and Mariisa Hardiman each with a pair of goals and an assist, Sarah Sinnott with a goal and Makenna Blazer with a goal. Goalie Hannah Humes made two saves.
Boys tennis
Fox Chapel boys tennis cruised to a 5-0 win over Plum on April 10. In singles, Robby Shymansky, Jared Nord and Milo Baron each rolled to 6-0, 6-0 wins. At first doubles, Kurran Singh and Jay Kashyap won 6-2, 6-0 and, at second doubles, Brandon Wei and Karsten Lagerquist posted a 6-0, 6-0 sweep.
The Foxes (8-0) defeated Baldwin, 4-1, on April 11. Robby Shymansky and Jared Nord won in singles, along with the doubles duos of Kurran Singh/Jay Kashyap and Brandon Wei/Karsten Lagerquist.
Track and field
The Fox Chapel track team opened up the season April 3 in a tri-meet with North Hills and Butler. The boys defeated North Hills, 77-67, but fell to Butler 117-33. The girls posted an 86-59 win over North Hills but suffered a 119-31 loss to Butler.
Boys first-place finishers were Christian Fitch (3,200), Ryan Santilli (800), Jon Folkerts (1,600), Evan Kieffer (400), Korey Simmons (300 hurdles), Dom Mcgriff (high jump), Seth Bowman (discus and javelin) and Andrew Jeffrey (200).
Girls winners were Kate Carnevale (100 and 200), Caelan Miller (800 and 1,600), Sarena Seeger (3,200), Jing McCann (shot put), Maddy Kieffer (400) and Jessica Michel (300 hurdles).
Boys lacrosse
Shady Side Academy boys lacrosse rolled to a 14-2 win over Central Catholic on April 7. The Indians got three goals each from Eric Evenson and Colm O'Connor, two apiece from George Grune and Chazz Troutmann and single goals from Jack Rice, Ben Ream, Jack Naughton and Jack Todd.
In Section 3-AAA action April 11, Shady Side Academy edged North Allegheny, 7-6.
“That was a big game for us,” SSA coach Cam Thompson said. “It was a great team effort.”
O'Connor scored three goals while Eric Everson scored twice. Ream had a goal and an assist and Grune also scored while Rice had three assists. Mike Dimarsico had 12 saves in goal.
The Fox Chapel boys lacrosse team is of to a 5-2 start, including wins over Chartiers Valley, Sewickley Academy, Shaler, Norwin and Plum. The Foxes have outscored those opponents 57-12.
Softball
The Shady Side Academy softball team got to play its first game of the season April 12 and saved the best for last. The Indians staged a four-run, two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh to pull out an 11-10 walk-off win over section foe Apollo-Ridge.
“We started the season off with a bang,” SSA coach Dave Havern said.
Trinity Murphy notched her first career win by pitching a scoreless top of the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, she drilled a bases-loaded shot into center field that narrowly missed being a grand slam. The hit drove in two runs. Bella Faiello then stroked a hard hit to left field that drove in the tying and winning runs.
