A good summer playing baseball for Flood City Elite helped Hempfield junior Dylan Firmstone get seen and receive a scholarship offer from Penn State.

Firmstone turned that offer into a commitment Wednesday. He cannot officially sign until his senior season.

“I liked the new coaches and the direction they want to take the program,” Firmstone said. “I’m excited to be part of it.”

The junior second baseman/pitcher batted a team-high .382 in 2023 and collected a team-high 21 hits. He scored 10 runs, stole four bases, had three doubles, hit a home run and had five RBIs.

He was 1-1 on the hill with an ERA of 2.92 in five relief appearances. In 12 innings, he struck out 11, allowed 11 hits and walked only four.

He pitched sparingly during his sophomore season while working back from an injury, according to Hempfield baseball coach Tim Buzzard.

Penn State recruited Firmstone as a pitcher.

“We had a good staff at Hempfield, and I was taking my time getting back,” Firmstone said. “I had a good enough summer to receive a PBR Future Game in Georgia.”

Firmstone said he’s throwing in the upper 80s and that he must continue to work to get faster.
