It was just one season, with one group of girls, but that doesn't mean Lindsy Muchnock will forget the short time she spent at Hempfield.
Muchnock resigned Tuesday as the Spartans' girls basketball coach as she gets set to take a teaching position at Mansfield High School in Ohio.
“It's tough to leave,” said Muchnock, 28, who guided Hempfield to a 12-12 record, a flurry of late-season upsets and a spot in the WPIAL Class 6A quarterfinals.
Muchnock begrudgingly cuts ties with Westmoreland County, at least for now. A graduate of Latrobe and Seton Hill, she said her position of physical education and health teacher is being eliminated at Hempfield, which prompted her move.
The Spartans finished tied for second in Section 2-6A last season after making a late push at the title. They averaged 45.4 points and gave up 45.0.
Her favorite memories aren't necessarily wrapped around numbers, however.
“Having a chance to clinch a share of the section title, just being in that position after our slow start,” Muchnock said of what she will remember most. “And getting my first postseason win as a head coach … and having alumni always coming back and building those relationships.”
And, don't forget, “Watching (Hempfield boys) coach (Bill) Swan coach,” Muchnock added. “I could go on and on.”
She doesn't plan to be out of the coaching game for long.
Mansfield just hired a new girls basketball coach, and Muchnock said she probably will try to find a way on to the staff: “I have to keep coaching,” she said.
