The Shady Side Academy girls track team finished with a 5-4 record last season. Coach Paul Bodnarchuk is hoping that the string of bad weather won't hamper his team in its quest to improve that mark.

“Weather has been an issue,” he said. “We're trying to get practices in whenever we can. It's been challenging, and we've been forced to have a lot of indoor practices, but it's just not the same.”

Bodnarchuk was happy with the turnout for tryouts.

“Our numbers were solid,” he said. “We have a nice influx of new talent, including two seniors who are trying out for the first time.”

SSA has two seniors returning who made it to the PIAA meet last year. Lindsey Grune finished first in the high jump at WPIALs and went to states. Jeanne Lauer finished third in the 800 and 1,600 at WPIALs and qualified for states. Both are captains this year.

Joining them as captains are junior Gabby White, who runs the sprints and the relays, and senior Hannah Steffey, who will run the 400 and the 1,600 relay. Junior Jordan Harris, who is part of the relay teams, also returns.

“There is a lot of strong effort and determination from our returning student/athletes,” Bodnarchuk said. “They have shown some strong leadership skills. About 35 percent of the team is new, so it will be interesting to see what the girls can accomplish.”

Despite the lack of cooperation from Mother Nature, Bodnarchuk is optimistic for the upcoming season.

“The girls are looking to reach a higher level,” he said. “We're all excited, and I have been impressed by their high enthusiasm and willingness to work hard at practice.”
