GCC’s Dewicki captures WCCA girls golf title

In the four years of the Westmoreland County Coaches’ Association’s girls golf tournament, a player from Greensburg Central Catholic has won the individual title three times.
This year, it was junior Angelika Dewicki, who took the title by shooting a 4-over-par 41 Wednesday at Champion Lakes Golf Course near Ligonier.
Dewicki overcame a slow start and finished strong to win the nine-hole event. Previous GCC winners were Olivia Zambruno in 2016 and Meghan Zambruno in ’18.
The only time a GCC girl didn’t win was in 2017 when Anna Stower of Penn-Trafford took top honors.
Norwin senior Jules Crosby won a scorecard playoff to place second. She and Greensburg Central Catholic’s Ella Zambruno tied with a 6-over 43, but Crosby’s par on No. 5 decided the place.
Dewicki started her round on the par-5 second hole with a bogey, and she struggled on the next two holes before birdies on Nos. 5 and 8 put her in the lead.
“This is a complete surprise,” Dewicki said. “I didn’t come here thinking I would do so well, especially after the beginning. But at the end, things worked out.”
Dewicki helped Greensburg Central Catholic to its second consecutive county team title.
“I was surprised how well I played,” Dewicki said. “Usually the Zambrunos play better, and I play worse.”
Meghan Zambruno, who placed seventh, won the event with a 37 in 2018. She edged her sisters, Abby and Ella.
Crosby said she was pleased with her round.
“There were some holes I could have played better,” she said. “Overall, it was a great day after a rough start. I really brought it home.”
Crosby played a steady round with five pars.
“I hope this is a precursor to the rest of the season,” Crosby said. “I think I have nine or 10 matches left, so I hope I can bring home low scores like that all of the time.”
Placing fourth by winning a scorecard playoff was Penn-Trafford’s Lauren Barber. She finished second in 2017.
She edged Kiski Area’s Bella Mercurio. Both shot 44. Hempfield’s Raina Jones edged Meghan Zambruno for sixth place, both shooting 45.
Franklin Regional’s Caroline Tragesser finished eighth with a 47, Belle Vernon’s Maria Kruppa was ninth with a 47 and Penn-Trafford’s Kendall Vertes rounded out the top 10 with a 48.
