SHIPPENSBURG — Greensburg Central Catholic freshman Corinn Brewer had a busy and productive Saturday at the PIAA track and field championships.
Brewer picked up seventh-place medals in the pole vault and the 800-meter run and added a bronze medal in the 1,600.
“I’m happy,” Brewer said after running the 800. “I knew I had a chance to place in all three events because of my seeding. I’m really happy that I had personal records in both runs.”
She finished behind Shady Side Academy sophomore Melissa Riggins, who repeated as champion in both runs. Riggins broke the PIAA record in the 800.
Brewer cleared 11 feet in the pole vault and ran the 800 in 2 minutes, 16.98 seconds and the 1,600 in 5:06.27.
“I felt good in the 1,600,” Brewer said. “When you run against Melissa, as long as I can see her, I know my times will be good. I went all-out. I couldn’t be happier.”
Williams earns 3 medals
Latrobe senior Zakharee Williams couldn’t have asked for a better ending to his high school career.
The Seton Hill commit brought home three medals from the state meet.
He placed fifth in the Class AAA 400 and was on two relay teams that placed in the top eight. The 400 relay team finished eighth and the 1,600 team seventh.
Williams ran with Joe Piper, Mitchel Carl and Ryan Sickenberger on the 400 team and Piper, Carl and Connor Pickup on the 1,600 relay.
Rams set record
The Ligonier Valley 400 relay team of Zach Beitel, Elliott Rost, Lucas Rashilla and Aaron Tutino placed sixth in Class AA and set a school record of 43.47.
“This is awesome,” Tutino said. “We wanted to be higher on the podium, but there were some great teams running. It was great that we did it with a record time.”
Rost also competed in the 200 finals and placed seventh running a 22.43.
Ending their high school careers
Greensburg Salem seniors Cam Binda and Malia Anderson left their marks on the school record books.
Saturday, they ended their careers by earnings medals at the state meet.
Binda placed fifth in the Class AAA 3,200, and Anderson placed fourth in a very fast Class AAA 800.
“It was my second-best run of the season,” Binda said. “I felt the 3,200 was my best chance at succeeding this season. It was awesome to win another medal.
“I had a long run in high school and being able to come back and get a medal is special.”
Anderson said she knew the competition was very good.
“The race was fast,” she said. “I didn’t know it was going to be that. My time was want I wanted. I wanted 2:10.”
Her time was 2.11.38.
“I’m going to miss high school, but it’s time to move on,” Anderson said.
Other Westmoreland County placewinners
Derry junior Justin Huss placed fifth in the 400 in Class AA. … Saltsburg’s Jenna Beitel placed seventh in the triple jump. … Belle Vernon senior Ezra Johnson placed seventh in the Class AAA discus with a throw of 127-6. … The lone county champion was the Burrell girls 400 relay team in Class AA.
