Gateway notebook: Hunter Raymer earns pair of medals at PIAA swim championships

Gateway junior Hunter Raymer capped the swimming season by earning a pair of medals at the PIAA Class 3A championships March 13-14, at Bucknell.

He secured an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard IM in a time of 1 minute, 54.10 seconds in the championship heat.

Conestoga’s Jake Wang won the event in 1:44.20.

The next day, he finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:34.99. Can Yenilay from Conestoga won the event in 4:20.60.

His totals helped Gateway finish 28th in the boys team standings with 25 points.

On the girls’ side, Gateway freshman Aliya Rassiane placed 11th in the 100-yard butterfly (59.18) at the PIAA Class 2A swimming championships.

Also, the Gateway girls 400 freestyle relay of Rassiane, senior Mallory Brown, sophomore Gianna Laurenti and senior McKenna Brown took eighth in 3:41.33.

The girls team finished 25th in the team standings.

Boys bowlers compete at states

The Gateway boys bowling team capped its season at the state championships in Lancaster on March 16.

The Gators finished in fourth place after the qualifying round and then lost to Neshaminy, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the playoff round.

In the first Baker game, Neshaminy won 213-188. The Game 2 score was 214-196.

Middletown then beat Neshaminy, 2-1, in the semifinals. Elizabethtown defeated Middletown, 2-1, in the championship match.

In the qualifying round, Gateway was led by Allon Wallace Jr., who threw a 614 three-game series, including a game of 232. Chase Owens (608), Landon Lohr (552) and Joey Jurczak (532) also threw three-game series.

Alex Keeling-Oliver and Jordan Trenga also competed for the Gators, who also posted Baker set games of 246-143-205 and 139-224-204 to finish with 3,962 total pins.

Jurczak also finished 15th at the state singles competition earlier this month.

Gateway hockey competes in playoffs

The Gateway hockey team had its season come to a close after a 5-3 loss to Bethel Park in the quarterfinals of JV Tournament Tier 2A on March 12, at Ice Castle in Castle Shannon.

Bethel Park jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period before Gateway tied the score in the second period on goals by Thomas Tuskan and Gavin Grant.

Gateway took a 3-2 lead just 21 seconds into the third period on another goal by Grant, with an assist from Tuskan.

Bethel Park, however, answered with three straight goals to complete the victory.

Canyon Hines had an assist, and Seth Hunkele made 31 saves for the Gators.
