The South Fayette Lions picked up their third WPIAL Championship with a 19-6 win over the Aliquippa Quips on Saturday afternoon at a blustery Heinz Field. The Lions took advantage of four Quips turnovers, three in the second half to claim their first title since 1964.
Jeff Davis ran for 85 yards and Christian Brumbaugh threw for 147 yards on 12 of 23 to lead the Lions. Aliquippa ran for 224 yards and had 357 yards of total offense, but were held scoreless over three quarters.
South Fayette took the first quarter lead on a Christian Brumbaugh 39 yard touchdown pass to Tyler Challingsworth on a five play 88 yard drive, set up by an Eric Myers fumble recovery of a botched center exchange.
The Quips answered the Lions score with a 56 yard drive of their own, capped by Dravon Henry's two yard run. A key play of the drive was a Mikal Hall 29 yard pass to Haetaun Mathis on a first and ten from the South Fayette 43.
Aliquippa had a good drive going to open the second quarter, but two penalties forced the Quips to punt, pinning the Lions at their own four yard line. On their next possession, Aliquippa was able to drive to the South Fayette 21 but on fourth down the ball was snapped over the head of Hall in the spread for a fifteen yard loss. South Fayette was able to drive to midfield but was called for offensive pass interference in the final minute.
The Lions took advantage of another Quip turnover to take a 12-6 lead in the third quarter. Tanner Courtad forced a fumble as Henry was looking for extra yards after a fifteen yard gain. Trevor Fiorentini recovered the fumble at the South Fayette 47. Brumbaugh completed three passes during the six play drive, hitting Tyler Challingsworth for 15 yards, then back to back completions to Zach Challinsworth, including a five yard touchdown catch.
South Fayette tried to add to that lead on their next possession, driving to the Quip 48 but Brumbaugh was sacked by Darius Walker then picked on the next play by Richard Lowe. Aliquippa tried to answer, but Courtad forced his second fumble of the game, recovered by Tyler Challingsworth at the Lion 17. The Lions went three and out to end the quarter, giving the Quips the ball at the 29, Henry fumbled at the 22, the third turnover of half and fourth of the game for Aliquippa, Nick Guyan covering the football for South Fayette.
After the teams traded punts, South Fayette took over on their own 30 and put the game in the hands of Jeff Davis, who carried eight times on a twelve play drive, helped out by a personal foul against the Quips. Firorentini capped it off with a two yard run with 2:25 to play to give the Lions the gold medals.
