The 4A standout Armstrong River Hawks traveled to Freeport on Wednesday night to face The Freeport Yellow Jackets. A 2A conference team doesn’t seem like the proper title for Freeport as they gave Armstrong everything they could handle. Armstrong took the match in 4 competitive sets (27-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-17). This non-conference bout featured two teams who already looked primed and prepared toward the WPIAL Playoffs.

In the first set, Armstrong stormed out to a 5-0 run and it seemed to stun Freeport a bit, and rightly so, considering Freeport has 3 WPIAL titles in the past 6 years and have lost just 8 section games in the past 11 years. Head Coach Tom Phillips has built a dynasty. A dynasty that can compete with schools nearly twice their size. They came back quickly and the scores were knotted up several times at 16, 21, and 25, before Armstrong ultimately took set one 27-25.

The second set was a bit different, as Freeport looked much livelier to start. Armstrong saw strong play from Sophomore Loryn Bowser and Junior Kenzie Lasher. They both kept them in the match, but Freeport’s play as a team willed them to a second set win by the score of 25-20.

In the final two sets it seemed that Armstrong wore down the Yellow Jackets. They were the better-conditioned team. Bowser and Lasher continued to dominate offensively and Hannah Bowman was unstoppable up the middle. Freeport had numerous player contributions as well but eventually it was not enough to hold off the River Hawks.

Some key player stats:

Freeport:

Katie Zingaro – 11 kills, 7 blocks

Elizabeth Burris – 6 kills

Hannah Mason – 4 kills

Armstrong:

Kenzie Lasher – 16 kills, 4 service aces, 3 blocks

Loryn Bowser – 20 kills, 1 block

Hannah Bowman – 20 kills, 3 service aces, 2 blocks
