Although the performance was far from perfect, the Freeport Yellow Jackets maintained their perfect record on the campaign with a straight-sets triumph against the Derry Area Trojans. Freeport prevailed against its section adversary 25-21, 25-18, 25-20. As a result, the defending champions improved to 5-0 in Class 2A Section 5, while the Trojans dropped to 2-2.
It was the Trojans who controlled the play in the early stages of the first set, however, as Derry scored the first three points, and led as late as 14-13. From that point forward, though, the Yellow Jackets found another gear, and outscored the Trojans 9-5 to close out the opening set.
The second set included Derry taking the early advantage again, but it was short lived, as Freeport secured a lead at 6-5 and never relinquished it. The Trojans mustered a rally to pull within one, at 18-17, but they couldn’t get over the hump. Much like the first set, Freeport finished strong with seven of the final eight points.
The third and final stanza followed a similar path, as Derry lead for the first several points, but could not gain much separation. After the teams exchanged points and the lead multiple times, Freeport went ahead 9-8 and carried that lead all the way to the finish.
Although the Yellow Jackets prevailed in straight sets, all three matches were closely contested, with neither team sustaining many notable runs. Moreover, Freeport head coach Tom Phillips noted that his team played sloppy at times, calling his squad a work in progress.
The key contributors in the Freeport victory included libero Claire Crytzer, outside hitters Hannah Mason and Jenna Manke, and opposite hitters Maddie Christy and Aly DeJidas. Also, sophomore Haley Graham admirably filled in for Katie Zingaro, who was unavailable due to injury.
In the setback for the Trojans, Sam Detore and Danielle Zemba were among the standouts.
Freeport has a week off before its next section tilt, a road contest against Deer Lakes. Derry, meanwhile, will host Deer Lakes this Thursday.
