Franklin Regional’s Jackson, North Allegheny’s Wrigley lead at PIAA Class AAA golf tournament

Franklin Regional senior Palmer Jackson and North Allegheny senior Caroline Wrigley are atop the leaderboard after Monday’s opening round of the PIAA golf championship.
Jackson shot a 2-over par 73 and is tied with Central Bucks East senior Patrick Sheehan and Harriton junior Andrew Wallace in the Class AAA boys tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.
The final round of the tournament is Tuesday. The team tournament will be held Wednesday.
Jackson, who finished second in 2017, began his round with a birdie on his first hole, No. 10, and added a birdie on No. 7.
Central Catholic senior Jimmy Meyers, the WPIAL champion, is fourth at 3-over while returning champion Liam Hart, a senior at Holy Ghost Prep, is fifth at 4-over.
Latrobe senior Brady Pevarnik and Pine-Richland senior Jack Wymard are tied for sixth at 5-over. Pevarnik rallied from two double bogeys during his round.
Wrigley shot a 2-over 74 to lead the Class AAA girls tournament. She countered a double bogey on No. 9 with an eagle on No. 18. The WPIAL champion also had a birdie on No. 2.
Uniontown senior Danae Rugola is third at 4-over, South Fayette freshman Caroline McConnell is tied for fourth at 6-over, Oakland Catholic senior Jessica Meyers is seventh at 8-over and Upper St. Clair senior Sara Steve is tied for eighth at 9-over.
In Class AA, Riverside junior Skyler Fox is tied for third at 4-over, two shots behind Notre Dame (East Stroudsburg) senior Williams Mirams at 2-over.
Carmichaels senior Matt Barrish is tied for sixth at 5-over, and Riverside junior Justin Hand is tied for ninth at 6-over.
In the Class AA girls tournament, North East (District 10) freshman Lydia Swan has opened up a four-shot lead over returning champion, Maddie Smithco, a junior from North Catholic. Swan shot a 2-over 74, and Smithco, the WPIAL champion, shot 6-over 78.
Central Valley senior Kiaria Porter is tied for third at 8-over with Greensburg Central Catholic freshman Meghan Zambruno and Rockwood (District 5) sophomore Vileska Gelpi.
GCC senior Abby Zambruno is sixth at 9-over and Sewickley Academy senior Tatum McKelvey is 11-over.
