Surprised wasn’t the right word, but Darren DeRiggi did not fully expect to have all-state honors arrive on his doorstep at the conclusion of high school baseball season.

He had just completed a crackling junior campaign where he accomplished his initial goal of starting for the Panthers.

That was the hit.

A spot on the Pennsylvania State Baseball Coaches Association All-State Class 5A second team was the giddy run around the bases.

“I did not have being a selection for an all-state player in mind coming into the season,” said DeRiggi, an infielder and pitcher. “All I knew I had to do was showcase my bat and get that starting spot so I could help my team offensively to win games and have a successful season. Being an all-state selection meant a lot to me for the main reason I was able to prove to coaches that doubted my ability to compete.”

A designated hitter, DeRiggi led Franklin Regional with 25 hits. He batted .490 and had 10 runs and 19 RBIs. His OPS was 1.170.

“Darren had a special season this year and is very deserving of all-state honors,” Franklin Regional coach Bobby Saddler said. “He had a great approach at the plate throughout the regular season and playoffs. Darren was a catalyst for our offense throughout the season and was a reason we were successful in both the regular and postseason. Darren worked extremely hard during the offseason and continued the same work ethic, which helped him produce throughout the year.”

Asked if his all-state selection will fuel an even more fruitful senior season, DeRiggi didn’t hesitate.

“Being a selection is motivating me to become the best player I can,” he said, “so I can prove to everyone that I’m able to compete with anyone that’s in front of me.”
