Zachary Palko made history. Robby Shymansky repeated it.

Palko, a junior at Indiana, and Shymansky, a senior at Fox Chapel, claimed the WPIAL boys tennis singles tournament championships Tuesday afternoon at Mt. Lebanon High School.

Palko became the first WPIAL champion in Indiana’s boys tennis history by dispatching Yash Maheshwari of Thomas Jefferson, 6-2, 6-2, in the Class AA final. The junior also is the first Little Indians player to qualify for the PIAA singles championships.

Shymansky, meanwhile, defended his Class AAA championship with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Allderdice’s David Missry. The Yale recruit will attempt to win his first PIAA title after finishing third last season and second in 2016.

In the two consolation matches contested Tuesday, Sewickley Academy’s Arjan Bedi defeated South Fayette’s Jacob Patterson, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, in Class AAA, and Valley’s Michael Odrey beat Quaker Valley’s Andres Hubsch, 6-2, 6-4.

The two finalists and consolation winners from each classification will participate in the PIAA singles tournament, which begins May 24 in Hershey.
