Fox Chapel notebook: Swimmers come home with state medals

The Fox Chapel boys and girls swimming teams wrapped up their seasons at the PIAA Class 3A swimming and diving championships at Bucknell. Sarah Pasquella ended up being Fox Chapel’s top performer.

The Foxes senior standout finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 1.8 seconds. Pasquella added plenty of medals to her collection. She also finished third in the 200 free and was a part of the 200 free and 400 free relays. The 200 free relay came in third place, while the 400 team finished fifth.

Josie Stanczak, Charlotte Rusche and Grace Kovach were on the relay teams with Pasquella. As a team, Fox Chapel finished sixth in the standings.

On the boys side, Jackson Hagler placed third in diving. Christian Dantey earned his way onto the podium in the 100 breaststroke and 200 free. Owen Howell placed fifth in the 200 IM.

Foxes open with win

Sydney Schutzman hit the 100-goal mark last season as a junior. The Fox Chapel senior showed during the Foxes’ 13-8 season-opening win over Indiana that she has plenty of scoring left to do. Schutzman tied for a team-high with three goals and had an assist in a win over the Little Indians.

Caroline Leland also scored three goals for Fox Chapel. Meg Delaney and Annie Mohn added two goals for the Foxes.

All-section picks

Fox Chapel had a strong season on the hardwood. The Foxes battled their way into the PIAA Class 5A playoffs before being eliminated in the second round by Bethel Park.

Fox Chapel finished the season 16-12. As a result of the Foxes’ succes, they had two players chosen for the first team for All-Section honors in Section 2 by the Big 56

Senior forward Will Siegel and junior guard/forward Asher White were honored. Senior guard Jefferson Moorefield-Brown was picked for the second team.

Basketball honors

Injuries slowed the Fox Chapel girls basketball season, and the Foxes missed out on the WPIAL playoffs, but the team had a few players selected for Big 56 all-section honors. Sophomore guard Lyla Jablon and junior Bella Urso were picked for the second team.

Senior forward Isabella Barbour, senior guard Skye Byrnes and senior guard Sarah Slember were picked as honorable mentions.
