Fox Chapel Herald notebook: Shady Side girls relay team wins WPIAL title

The Shady Side Academy girls 3,200-meter relay team was laser focused on winning a WPIAL Class 2A championship. The Bulldogs didn’t disappoint in their pursuit May 14 at Slippery Rock University.

Shady Side Academy finished nearly 10 seconds ahead of second-place North Catholic en route to the top of the podium. The Bulldogs’ team consists of Sarah Kushnir, Rhyley Bendel, Charlotte Barker and Ella Van Noroman. Shady Side Academy’s team finished in a time of 9 minutes, 34.10 seconds.

The 3,200 relay team was the strongest part of what was a good day for the Bulldogs.

Javon Johnston finished in third place in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 11 inches. Johnston also finished second in the triple jump (44-1).

Bendel and Van Norman finished in sixth and seventh place, respectively, in the 800-meter run. Cameron Mallory placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 45-7.

FC boys bow out

Fox Chapel boys lacrosse picked up a rare win over Upper St. Clair in the regular season. But rthe Foxes couldn’t find the magic to do it twice. During the first round of the WPIAL playoff, the Foxes were bounced out by the Panthers, 11-6. Tucker Cullen led the Foxes with two goals and two assists.

Shady Side Academy, which is seeded second, beat Canon-McMillan, 15-2.

Girls lacrosse upset

The Fox Chapel girls lacrosse team had grand ambitions for the WPIAL playoffs, but that’s not ultimately how things panned out for the Foxes. During the first round of the Class 3A tournament, Fox Chapel lost 11-10 in overtime at home against Norwin.

Shady Side Academy upended Bethel Park, 13-8, in the first round. The Bulldogs were scheduled to challenge top-seeded Pine-Richland in the quarterfinals.

Hastings reaches 100 wins

Fox Chapel baseball coach Jim Hastings recently reached the 100-win mark for his career.

Hastings said the baseball program is planning a celebration with former staff to help promote an event later in the summer.
