Fox Chapel grad reaching goals on Saint Vincent golf team

Brevin Urso put himself in position for a strong finish to his senior season during the fall.

With how the Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s golf championship is set up, one round is played in the fall while the other two are played in April. Urso, a Fox Chapel Area graduate and Saint Vincent College senior, shot an 8-over par 80 to finish in 17th place at the Avalon Golf & Country Club.

Urso’s goal as a senior was to reach the top 10. After the first round, he sat only a few strokes away from making that happen. Urso feels his cumulative experience from playing in college has prepared him to make a run at his goal.

“You want to play the course and not your opponent,” Urso said. “When you try to get super aggressive and play against someone else, you could put yourself in a bad position.”

Coming out of high school, Urso wasn’t sure what to expect while playing for the Bearcats. In high school, Urso had to fight tooth and nail to stay on varsity. With everything lined up with Saint Vincent, Urso moved to the top of the experience list quickly.

Bearcats coach Sam Firestone said that Urso was able to learn to slide into a leadership role as time went on.

“With how the class fell with his recruiting class, there was an open roster spot on the travel team,” Firestone said. “He embraces that role. It helped him for years after. He is a solid player and doesn’t want to give up. He wants to support the team to ensure everyone has the best round possible.”

Urso has been able to knock down many of his goals as a collegiate player before his senior year. He wanted to win a few tournaments, both as an individual and a team. After several second-place finishes, Urso broke through to win the Thiel Invitational as a junior.

Urso said he has finished as the individual medalist twice in his college career.

“I would say my mental approach has improved,” Urso said. “I trust I will bounce back if I have a bad hole or a bad tournament. I take it shot by shot, hole by hole.”’

Uros recently led Saint Vincent by shooting an 8-over par 80 to finish 32nd at the Penn State Altoona Invitational. It was part of a strong April for Urso. He won the Thiel Invitational and placed in the top 10 of the W&J Rossin Invitational.

Urso would like to continue battling to crack the top 10 at the PAC tournament, the results of which were too late for this edition.

Firestone is impressed with the progress Urso has made.

“His growth the past four years, it’s hard to describe how far he’s come,” Firestone said. “He understands his game well and knows how to stay in the round. He’s always moving forward.”
