Fox Chapel and Shady Side Academy Work Overtime for Field Hockey Gold

Here are the recaps from both the 2012 WPIAL Girls Field Hockey Class AAA Championship Match won by Fox Chapel, and the Class AA Title Match won by Shady Side Academy. Both the Foxes and the Indians needed overtime to seal the golden deal Wednesday night at North Allegheny High School.

Fox Chapel Foxes 1 – Penn-Trafford Warriors 0 in Overtime

Fox Chapel got the “Golden Goal” in overtime to win their first WPIAL field hockey championship since 1997 defeating Penn Trafford 1-0 in the AAA championship game at North Allegheny high school Wednesday night. The Foxes were outplayed for much of the cold rainy night. In fact the final numbers are very lopsided . The Warriors of Penn Trafford held a very lopsided edge in terms of scoring opportunities. Penn Trafford’s final edge in penalty corners was dramatic. Renn Trafford generated seven penalty corners in the first half, nine more in the second half and a pair in the overtime for their total of 18 on the night. Fox Chapel on the other hand generated two penalty corners in the first half, and that’s it, that’s the list. Ahhh but the only stats that matters is the one listed under “G” for goals in the stat sheet . Outstanding play from senior goalie Alaina George time and time again kept the Foxes in the hunt and eventually they made it pay off in overtime.

Penn Trafford started the seven-on-seven 15 minute sudden death period the same way they had played the whole game generating a pair of opportunities and a pair of penalty corners in the first four minutes but they just could not find a way to get the ball behind George. As the overtime wore on the greater space created by the lesser amount of players being on the pitch seemed to fatigue the Warriors and suddenly Fox Chapel was getting more and more offensive pressure going. Rose Grenen’s shot from the far wing was stopped by Penn Trafford keeper Harry Miller but he seemed to lose sight of the rebound which was right near his right foot about 2 feet from the goal line. Fox Chapel senior forward Sammi Pitz saw it the whole time and at the 11:51 mark of the OT pounced with a blasting shot that sent the Foxes into hysterics and the PIAA tournament. Final score Fox Chapel 1 , Penn Trafford 0. The Warriors were attempting to defend their title from last year and appeared well on their way behind very dominating play up front from Sydney Pribanic and Amanda Steffey, but in the circle time and, time again the Foxes defenders led by Lizzie Martin stepped up and turned them away. The Foxes were playing in the WPIAL championship for the third time in four years. Prior to the game head coach Jen McCrady said , “I hope the third time is the charm.” The charm has turned into a gold medal.

Shady Side Academy Indians 2 – Sewickley Academy Panthers 1 in Overtime

The top seed in AA field hockey clinched the WPIAL AA championship Wednesday night at North Allegheny high school as Shady Side Academy got the deciding goal off a penalty corner 5:41 into overtime. Sydney Mordoh took the feed at the top of the circle and fired an absolute bullet that deflected off the stick of a Sewickley defender into the Panther goal and the celebration was on.

Shady Side started strong and appeared in control early but Sewickley Academy seemed to gain confidence and momentum as the first period went along scoreless until the 11:23 mark. Shady Side cracked the scoreboard open as Mordoh let go with a rocket from the right wing side of the circle that was perfectly deflected behind Sewickley net minder Sarah Duplaga and into the goal by Isabel Aiken for a 1-nil Indian lead.

Sewickley would answer though at the 6:12 mark of the second half on a tremendous individual effort from senior Alexis Bosilivic, from her own end Bosilivic went coast to coast about 75 yards with the dribble beating at least five different Shady Side defenders before knocking the equalizer behind sophomore keeper Gabby Harchelroad for a 1-1 tie. The score remained that way into the overtime setting the stage for the Mordoh heroics.

This was a pretty evenly played contest all night long and there was a lot of great play between the twenties for both teams. Shady Side generated six penalty corners, (a pair in the first a pair in the second and a pair in the overtime), while Sewickley had five chances with the penalty corner three in the first half, two in the second and none in the overtime period.
