Ellwood City multi-sport star Joseph Roth makes college choice

Joesph Roth, one of the most unique multi-sport athletes in WPIAL history, has made his college choice.
Roth, an Ellwood City senior, announced Friday that he will continue his swimming career at Ohio State.

Roth was a seven-time medalist at both the WPIAL and PIAA championships, where he swam for Riverside as part of a co-op because Ellwood City doesn’t have a swim team.
At the state meet, he won the 100 backstroke as a sophomore and junior and finished second as a freshman and senior. He also finished second, third and fifth in the 50 free.
He is a four-time WPIAL swimming champion, winning the 100 back as a freshman, sophomore and junior and the 50 free as a sophomore. This year, he finished second in the 50 free and 100 back.
Roth is also a WPIAL champion in basketball, leading 11th-seeded Ellwood City on a Cinderella run to the school’s first title as a freshman in 2021.
Roth finished his basketball career with 2,109 points.
