They are few and far between, but we have seen teams pull off perfect football seasons before in the WPIAL. However the new kids on the block in Class AAA went for perfection in a different way that has never been done before. One Season – One Championship. After the 2009 school year, Center High School and Monaca High School merged to form a new school district. Central Valley shocked all by surviving a tough Parkway Conference to make the playoffs, then from the 14th-seed, rip off four postseason victories, capped by the upset of unbeaten Montour at Heinz Field to win WPIAL gold in the schools very first year. Here is a look back at the WPIAL Class AAA in 2010.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM WPIAL CLASS AAA FOOTBALL IN 2010:
* So how tough was the Parkway Conference in 2010? The eight teams; Montour, West Allegheny, Central Valley, Hopewell, Blackhawk, New Castle, Moon and Ambridge played 16 non-conference games during the regular season. The eight teams combined finished with a record of 13-3 (the three losses were Ambridge to Keystone Oaks, Hopewell to Mount Lebanon and West Allegheny to Upper St. Clair. In comparison, the Greater Allegheny Conference was 10-11, the Keystone Conference was 6-11 and the Big Eight Conference was 3-13.
* Here are some more impressive numbers from the Parkway Conference. 2010 marked the fifth straight year that a team from the Parkway made it to the WPIAL Class AAA finals at Heinz Field. It also marked the second straight year that the championship game was an all Parkway Conference affair with Central Valley beating Montour. West Allegheny beat Hopewell in the 2009 title game
* There was no gold at the end of the rainbow, but it was still another banner year for the Thomas Jefferson Jaguars. TJ won a fifth straight conference title and have now won or tied for the conference championship in ten of the eleven years this century. The Jaguars also stretched their record string of consecutive trips to the WPIAL Semifinals to THIRTEEN years in a row.
* While it was back to normal for the Keystone Conference in the playoffs as the four teams went 0-4 in Round One (Keystone Conference teams are now 1-40 in the last ten postseasons), it was quietly another banner opening week on the Highway to Heinz for the Greater Allegheny Conference. Mars, Knoch, Indiana and Highlands were all First Round winners, improving the record of GAC teams in round one in the last two years to an impressive 7-1.
